Hawke, in Where can a Boomer catch up on current computer/software technology?

Lots of great recommendations here. I’ll add some things:

  1. Windows will be a great choice for something you are familiar with, but the current iterations are definitely heading in the direction of being advertising-filled messes. So it’s not a bad idea to look at alternatives.
  2. Apple should be a good choice for a “just works” system without a lot of junk in it. But if you’re new to it there will be a learning curve. Software options are also more limited. AutoCAD looks to be your only major commercial CAD option there.
  3. If you want to explore Linux, try a live usb stick and see what you think. It will feel very different and there will be a larger learning curve, but a liveUSB should be a risk free and relatively easy way to try it out and see if you love the difference or hate the change. If you still are interested at that point consider dual-booting or repurposing an older system for something to tinker with.
  4. CAD in particular might be a sticking point. Windows will give you the most options. You didn’t mention whether you’re tied to a specific system as is common for a profession / livelihood or whether you’re open to options. If you’re able to look at alternatives— AutoCAD is on Mac and Windows, SolidWorks is on windows only. QCAD is a smaller option for 2D CAD on all three platforms and I’ve been happy with it for everything I’ve tried to do.
just_ducky_in_NH,

Thank you for your input! I’m hoping to do some 3D work, but I have the same view as you of Windows’ future. I will have to determine what I can live with: ads in the OS or 2D CAD.

Reverendender, in What really popular movie or TV show have you never seen?

The Lion King. Beauty and the Beast. Frozen.

De_Narm, in What really popular movie or TV show have you never seen?

Pretty much everything. I didn’t watch many things when I was single, I prefer more active things like games or social activities.

Since I got my girlfriend, I’ve been keeping up with a lot of anime series/movies since she’s a weeb. But we haven’t seen anything except Barbie with actual people.

However, there are so many memes about the good stuff, I feel like I’ve seen enough about all of them anyway.

hemko, (edited ) in What are the facts you remember for no specific reason

Bicycle wheels with quick release axles have 9.525mm diameter, rounded up to 10mm. This is because the sizing is not actually metric, but 3/8 inch so imperial.

This is why it’s most commonly called 9mm qr (quick release) /facepalm

mnemonicmonkeys,

To be fair, 0.5mm is a good clearance foe that application

aldalire, in Physicists of Lemmy, what is up?

May i present to you the cosmological principle

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmological_principle

the cosmological principle is the notion that the spatial distribution of matter in the universe is uniformly isotropic when viewed on a large enough scale

So in some sense, everywhere is up

Mango,

I was thinking up is the direction of the expansion of the universe. Not sure if this supports that or not. Or maybe since we’re drawn that way, it’s the opposite?

RememberTheApollo, in What really popular movie or TV show have you never seen?

Game of Thrones.

Read the books and got maybe to the 5th book? 6th? And gave up. It stopped going anywhere, the politics went away, it was just people going from A to B and getting killed somewhere along the way. Just like the show, they lost direction and floundered, Martin couldn’t finish it off.

So I never bothered to watch it. Never will.

Shimitar,

Me too

CodingCarpenter,

I’ve never seen the show or gotten past the first couple pages of the first book so we’re in a similar boat

dditty,

Probably the fifth since GRRM has not yet published book six (TWoW) or 7 (ADoS), unless you count the spinoff books and/or the history book (A World of Ice and Fire).

I agree that the books fizzled out, but that’s kinda the only interpretation possible since we haven’t gotten 6 & 7. Theoretically the whole story has been building to those books (7 most of all based on how the show presented their likely events), but 5 (A Dance w Dragons) was definitely a chore to get through. That whole book felt like filler imo

paddirn, (edited )

You definitely saved yourself, the show took out so much stuff, which was kind of inevitable, but the amount they took out in order to slap in some trash was a bit aggravating. Spoilers below.

. ———— .

And even knowing how seemingly pointless some of the stuff would turn out, it’s odd they kept any of the Dorn stuff in in the later seasons. I get that Pedro Pascal was awesome, but the Dorn stuff in the show was even more pointless than it was in the books.

Biggest sin I think though was leaving out Lady Stoneheart. In GRRM’s mind, I suspect Arya’s story is so deeply intertwined with her’s that to leave her out just basically knee-capped Arya’s revenge-fueled character arc, she’s headed for a confrontation with LS, to see a sort of mirror-image of herself. In the show she was given a somewhat unearned “consolation prize” that just seemed stupid.

dan1101, in What really popular movie or TV show have you never seen?

Sopranos, Breaking Bad, The Goonies, Gremlins, the new Avatar, most Star Trek movies, any movie like La La Land, Finding Nemo, Frozen, a lot more.

RubberElectrons, (edited ) in How was Rudy Guiliani as mayor of NYC?
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

If you look at NYC’s mayoral timeline, you’ll see David Dinkins ahead of him for just one term, 90-94.

In my opinion, he was the real solver of our crime issues, as besides the overall economy starting to escape the republican shitstorm of Reaganomics, we started the PAL program (Police Athletic League) and used some anti-crime money to keep schools open later.

This is a key point here, most crime was being committed by bored young men of school age, so instead of letting them out at 3 till their parent(s) got off work, PAL and other after-school programs let them hang out with friends, shoot basketball or take fun classes, etc. People had the ability to stay out of trouble a lot more easily, and for free.

First year of Dinkins, homicide peaks. Then it starts trending sharply down, statistics backed by the first ever computerized crime ledger, compstat. That first year made everyone think Dinkins was ineffective, so Giuliani got his shot. But all Giuliani did was coast on Dinkins work, besides posting cops in visible places like MTA turnstiles.

I really want to write a long screed about how shitty of a mayor who couldn’t win a single lawsuit Giuliani was, but I think airing out how much better his precessor was would hurt his image even more.

But I’ll say this: that whole nightclub scene NYC used to be famous for? Killed by Giuliani. There were nightclubs where you were in shoulder-high bubbles, dancing or more if you wanted. Famous places too, that one spot in the east village that was a bankrupt church, converted into a goth nightclub… just memories because of a sensitive bitch fuckhead named Giuliani.

The Wire, The Office, Parks and Rec, The Expanse.

GoT because I’d read the first two books and got bored of a medieval soap opera where the writer substitutes misery porn for a plot.

Breaking Bad because Bryan Cranston vaguely irritates me (I don’t know why, I’m sure he’s a lovely man).

Zombie related stuff because seriously, it was non-stop shit zombie movies for almost a decade and I’m bored of it. It’s just become another lazy trope. Exception: Zombieland.

neidu2,

Everything I’ve seen and heard indicates that he is in fact a wonderful person. But I’m not going to argue with you, because I have such an intense hatred for Hugh Grant and Richard Gere. And I don’t have a rational explanation as to why.

Should probably make an effort to know so many as a Canadian but only know the one conversion

5cm to 2 inches. It’s slightly off but good to a 30cm = one foot.

Useful when converting penis measurements.

I don’t have anything against them, I’m sure they’re all fine, I’ve just never had to interest in watching them.

Harry Potter movie series and Lord Of The Rings movie series. Never seen any of them.

user1234, in What is this wire for?

As many have said, that’s an IR receiver. That specific model commonly came with Hauppauge TV tuner cards.

acceptable_pumpkin,

Wow, I hadn’t heard that name in so long. I just remembered my Hauppauge TV tuner I had back in the day. Felt like streaming on a computer does today.

NickwithaC,
@NickwithaC@lemmy.world avatar

You can still get them and there are still over-the-air broadcast channels. TV without a subscription, plus you can record straight to your PC.

user1234,

Yep. Used to record all sorts of TV shows on my computer using them. Though they aren’t nearly as prevalent since Internet streaming has taken over. I doubt I could pick up more than 2 or 3 channels over-the-air where I live anymore.
