SheerDumbLuck, (edited ) in What if reddit joins race of services joing fediverse?

If they did that, Reddit would just be an aggregator app of the Fediverse with different communities acting as a new subreddit. The difference would be that they’d have ads and algorithms.

On the Fediverse side, it’d be like having a lemmy.ml with 1000x the traffic and activity. We probably have to defederate to keep up with the traffic and the trolling.

On the plus side, 3rd party apps will be back baybee!

Nemo, in How much does the original book have to change to be considered fanfiction?

Fanfictions are original works using the setting or characters of another work.

If you change some things and republish, that’s an adaptation.

For example, the recent film Fire Island was an adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.

Agent641, in How to respond to gf saying "I'm fat"

Slam your fist on the counter and shout " I’m fatter, dammit!"

Redacted, in How much does the original book have to change to be considered fanfiction?
@Redacted@lemmy.world avatar

This is a variation of the famous Ship of Theseus thought experiment.

neptune,

Well it’s not because there is a legal answer.

crsu, in How does federation actually work?

I’ve never admined a lemmy server but rate limits are probably why it feels slow.

Federation works by each server sharing new activity with each other and rate limits help not crash the server or accidentally DOS smaller servers.

Zak, (edited ) in How does federation actually work?
@Zak@lemmy.world avatar

Your server sends a message to other servers saying what you voted or replied.

A reply dialog being slow to open sounds like an issue with your client, not federation.

Agrivar,

Huh. I’m just browsing Lemmy in a Firefox tab - and the reply dialog sometimes opens right up and other times leaves me wondering if I really hit that button! I wasn’t sure if that was another thing where my instance had to “ask” the federation if I could reply before giving me the dialog or something.

can,

As far as I understand it federation shouldn’t have anything to do with commenting on your own instance but rather after when it gets sent to other instances.

Bitrot,
@Bitrot@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

It doesn’t. Even if you defederate with an instance, you can still comment and vote on posts from that instance that predate the defederation and people on your instance will see them, it just won’t go to the original one.

can,

it just won’t go to the original one.

And for clarity it won’t go to any other instances’ copies either.

neidu2, in I am concerned about my cars extended warranty. I've tried to call a bunch of places but they all laugh and hang up. How can I get someone to call me about ny cars extended warranty?

Similar problem here. I’ve invented a pill that actually does make your penis 30% larger with no side effects, but nobody seems interested in investing in scaling up production.

Crackhappy,
@Crackhappy@lemmy.world avatar

Hmm. Tell me more.

neidu2,

It all started when a friend and I were cruising down the street in his brand new Ferrari. You see, he ran a website with an award for the one millionth visitor. It had a flashing banner popup with sound and everything, but nobody registered to claim the Ferrari. That’s when it dawned on me that someone should actually do some research into penis enlargement pills, and the answer was surprisingly simple. To make one you just need to use this one weird trick, discovered by a mom.

A_Random_Idiot,

Wow, that could get me a whole .10 of an inch more length! incredible!

Presi300, in What is a nifty little feature modern gadgets have lost?
@Presi300@lemmy.world avatar

A headphone jack, bluetooth sucks, it’s convenient but it sucks. It’s audio quality is bad, it’s latency is bad… it’s just all bad.

n3m37h,

Id disagree about bluetooth these days. I have a pair of headset I use daily between my computer and phone. Quality is there, ive done side by side conparisons via 2.4ghz dongle, bluetooth and wired (headset supports all) and I cant hear a difference.

rob_t_firefly, (edited )
@rob_t_firefly@lemmy.world avatar

There may not be a difference when you’re sitting in front of a computer but Bluetooth quality can go way downhill if you’re trying to listen to earbuds while your phone is in your pocket or a bag or similar, especially if you’re moving around and/or there’s a lot of electronic interference in the area. My city commute is when I really miss wired listening.

TheSaus,

Bro how shit are your bluetooth headphones?? I’ve had busy city commutes plenty with even cheapoid wireless headphones, iphone 6s, phone in pocket or bag…

n3m37h,

Dude, I live in a faraday cage (lath & plaster with chicken wire embedded in it) and I can walk around my house with little to no issues. Bluetooth 4+ has been rock solid for me. At most my phone disconnects but thats my phones issue. Bluetooth to my PC is perfect an never had any dropouts.

crsu,

If bluetooth is so great why don’t they use it for concert audio at big shows?

n3m37h,

Its for personal use ya dummy. What a stupid line of questoning

intensely_human,

It’s an excellent line of questioning, and it conveys the point well.

n3m37h,

Really? Something that has a range of 30’ (9m) and use it for a fucking concert and use the same frequencies as 1000’s of atendees?

Bluetooth is a short range low bandwidth (at least vs wifi, 3/4/5g) protocol. Using it for something well outside its capablilites is stupid. Like taking a mini mudding or hammering in nails using a rachet

You hypothetical situation is just pointing out the very well known flaws of the bluetooth protocol. So once again, what a stupid line of questioning

gnygnygny,

Removable battery and optional modules like the LG G5 : VR headset, DAC, …

n3m37h, (edited )

Dude, I miss the LG G5 and the V20. Had some pretty good ideas for the time. I liked how the V20 had a tiny always on display so the main display could power down. Although OLED dont have the power drain problem that LCD have when using AOD

draxil,

I only buy phones with headphone jacks. Don’t look forward to not having the option.

MisterD,

This has a headphone jack and removable battery.

samsung.com/…/galaxy-xcover6-pro-black-128gb-sm-g…

Pluckerpluck,

Latency is still so bad. It doesn’t really have to be either. Low latency tech has existed for ages, but nobody seems to care!!

I can’t stand it though. How anyone uses Bluetooth headset with, say, the Steam Deck, I have no idea.

MeanEYE,
@MeanEYE@lemmy.world avatar

Bluetooth audio can’t be bad, it’s digital. I would understand it drops packets or is choppy but quality should be given. What can suck is DAC on your headphones, which is the likely culprit.

BoastfulDaedra,

Where on Earth did you get the idea that being digital means it can’t be bad???

MeanEYE,
@MeanEYE@lemmy.world avatar

Because chances are your device has Bluetooth version 5.2, as all newer phones have and standard has been out for almost a decade now. That version supports both aptX and LC3 codecs. Both of which are significantly higher quality than default inital SBC. In fact aptX has been around since 2009. In 2009, Senheizer released first ever Bluetooth headset with aptX support. Later in 2016 we got aptX HD.

Even Sony’s proprietary LDAC codec has been added to Android in version 8 and was officially supported by all Android devices since then. That codec can push 32 bits/96 kHz, which is more than enough quality.

Of course with all digital protocols, like Bluetooth is, received data is the same as transmitted data. If your headset audio quality is lacking, that is on headset, not protocol itself since Bluetooth supports high quality audio for decades now. Only time when Bluetooth will revert back to old codec which was “reasonable quality” as they describe it is if your headset doesn’t support better codecs.

BoastfulDaedra, (edited )

Relying on a codec, which intrinsically plays priority on the basis of specific frequencies, is intrinsic to the limitations of using low-energy radio waves in the UHF range. Codecs are for phone calls and data packets, not full spectrum audio. That doesn’t solve the issue, it just slaps a bandage on it so it’s less noticeable. If I need a larger spectrum, rather than a patch of bass and treble, Bluetooth continues to fall dramatically and irritatingly short.

I’m glad it works for your purposes, though. I do not mean to come off like a jerk; I just prefer dedicated bands for anything wireless that cover a wider range.

BoastfulDaedra, in Should I wait for the "Snyder cut" (director's cut) of Rebel Moon?

Well… Sailor Moon was much better written.

thecookingsenpai, in What is a nifty little feature modern gadgets have lost?

That crackling sound you had on your calls back in the analogic era. Not sure is a feature but made calls more warm.

n3m37h,

Not to mention the cross talk communications you could have

MrsDoyle,

It was a build-up of something or other (carbon?) on the microphone part of the caller’s handset. You could fix it by tapping the handset sharply on a hard surface. Source: I used to work in radio back in the 80s.

thecookingsenpai,
@thecookingsenpai@lemmy.world avatar

Wow I am fascinated a lot by the radio’s world, especially pre-digital era. Hope to never meet me irl or i’ll ask questions for a couple of hours lel

leraje, in Should I wait for the "Snyder cut" (director's cut) of Rebel Moon?
@leraje@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I must be one of the few people who quite likes Snyder’s work. Yes it’s stylistic-heavy but in terms of Rebel Moon, given it was supposed to be a Star Wars movie, they’d clearly relied on being able to use Star Wars lore in place of some character development. And then, also consider this release has been heavily chopped to be kid-friendly. It was OK. I’ll certainly be watching the directors cut and I suspect it’ll be as good as the Justice League cut, which was really good.

huquad, in What has been the best thing that has happened to you so far?

Meeting my spouse. They make me want to be a better person.

Staiden,

Yeah. My toxic as shit ex wife decided she wanted a divorce. What I perceived to be the worst day of my life was actually the best day of my life I just didn’t know it yet.

I met this extremely successful woman that has shown me life can be amazing. I never thought life could be this good.

Sprinks, in How to respond to gf saying "I'm fat"

For the past year ive been struggling with my body image because of a small amount of weight gain even though im fully aware im not fat. I love my husband to death, but i wish he had done the below when i expressed disliking my physical appearance.

Stop and hug them. Give them reassurance through physical contact. Tell them you love them. Hearing it, even when you know you are loved, is reassuring. Tell them they’re beautiful and compliment something specific about them, like the color of their eyes or a cute mole. Then, treat them to a date somewhere they can dress up “fancy”, spend the night complimenting their appearance, and “show them off” as if you cant help but brag to the world that a beautiful woman like her chose to be with you that night.

Calanthesrose,

Thank you for a serious answer. I would love it if a man did this for me after I expressed dislike about my appearance.

leraje, in What if reddit joins race of services joing fediverse?
@leraje@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Just like with Threads, you have to ask - why are they doing it? What’s in it for them? How good an internet citizen are they? And the answers for me, just like Threads, are not good for the fediverse.

Some of the replies to people against Threads federating are that those of us who don’t like the idea are isolationists who don’t want the fediverse to grow. They’re wrong. Nobody I know is protesting WordPress federating, or Discourse or Flipboard or microblog or (if it happens) Tumblr. The fediverse getting bigger is not a bad thing. But the likes of Meta and reddit are not good internet citizens. Being picky and having standards about choosing to federate with entities like that is the most responsible thing we can do.

A headphone jack

A home button

Replaceable battery

MisterD,
CaptainArcher, (edited )

Who wants rounded corners on their display? It’s an otherwise decent looking phone.

Boxtifer,

I can fully admit that I don’t think the home button was that useful compared to the software equivalents.

The other two, yeah I fully agree.

elbarto777,

Buttons that you can manipulate without opening your eyes at night. Yes, please.

RobertoOberto,

Not trying to be snarky here, but what are you trying to do with your phone without opening your eyes? I sometimes snooze my morning alarm with the power button on the side without looking at it, but what did the home button do for you when you weren’t looking at the screen?

elbarto777,

I can activate Google Assistant and ask it to tell me the time.

(No, I don’t like Google Assistant to constantly listen for a wake-up word. I had two previous bad experiences with that.)

RobertoOberto,

Fair enough, sounds reasonable.

morphballganon,

Still rocking a Galaxy J7 here, has all of those
