Phantom_Engineer, in What's the significance of calling it "Israel-Hamas War" vs "Israel-Gaza War"?
@Phantom_Engineer@lemmy.ml avatar

It matters very little. It’s performative, trying to justify the conflict by framing it one way or another. The reality on the ground will remain the same no matter what the media calls it. Ultimately, it will be historians that name the war.

The combatants are Israel and Hamas. The location is Gaza. Conclude from that what you will as far the “proper” name for the conflict.

theFriendWhoIsAsking,

The combatants are the IDF and Hamas. The location is Gaza. But if the ones dying aren’t soldiers but rather ordinary civilians, and if those civilian deaths aren’t tragic accidents but rather the intended outcomes of the attacks, some might believe this isn’t a war between militaries. This is a slaughter of populations. This is terror. This is genocide.

Hamas attempted such an act on Israel. But right now, the IDF is bombing refugee camps, targeting ambulances, blocking humanitarian aid convoys, and murdering men, women, and children - civilians - by the literal thousands.

Israel-Hamas, Israel-Gaza, it’s all performative. You’re right. But there’s a lot of subtext behind each performance. Is this a war against a small terrorist cell, or an extermination of a territory and all those who call it home? I can’t speak to the motives of newscasters using either wording, but just like OP, I do wonder what they’re trying to convey.

doctorcrimson, in What's the significance of calling it "Israel-Hamas War" vs "Israel-Gaza War"?

When Israel stops bombing Gaza residents indiscriminately I will then consider calling it a war against Hamas.

kleenbhole,

William Montgomery says we ain’t ever gonna stop.

Blamemeta, in What's the significance of calling it "Israel-Hamas War" vs "Israel-Gaza War"?

Hamas is the organization that runs gaza. Theyre the largest political party in Palestine, they collect taxes, and they have an army. Imagine if the US Army was on the election ballot, and ran the East Coast.

Its essentially the same thing, just “Hamas/Israel” reminds you of what Hamas does, and “Gaza/Israel” is trying to erase that.

Earthwormjim91,

They have not allowed an election to be held in 17 years. They’re no more a “political party” than the Taliban.

Blamemeta,

Yeah thats true. Political group maybe? Not exactly sure how to label them.

squirmy_wormy,

Governing body? Political entity? Junta?

Edit: I was curious so I looked it up. The words used on their wiki are “dominant political force”

Blamemeta,

That sounds like a good label

squirmy_wormy, in What's the significance of calling it "Israel-Hamas War" vs "Israel-Gaza War"?

SirToxicAvenger, in What's the significance of calling it "Israel-Hamas War" vs "Israel-Gaza War"?

gaza is the location, hamas are the terrorists that govern it

commie,

“terrorist” is loaded language.

jeffw,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

Is Israel doing terrible things and committing war crimes that border on genocide? Yes. Is Hamas a terrorist group? Yes

Edit: can’t believe I didn’t recognize the account. It’s a troll. They comment stupid stuff all over. Check the comment history if you don’t believe me

commie,

calling them terrorist just means you don’t like their politics

rikudou,
@rikudou@lemmings.world avatar

Nah, that means they’re using terror as their politics. Republicans in the US are fucking idiots and no one sane likes their politics, yet I don’t see people calling them terrorists.

epicsninja,

Jeez, 1.24k comments in 3 months. I get what people mean when they tell someone to “touch grass”

jeffw,

To be fair… that’s about what I have too lol, in only a slightly longer timeframe. But at least mine aren’t just for the sake of amassing downvotes

Regardless of their post history, they’re not wrong here. One man’s freedom fighter is another’s terrorist.

Edit: I thought this article was fascinating about that quote and why I agree with the claimed troll here www.cbc.ca/news2/indepth/words/terrorists.html

jeffw,
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

Right, freedom fighters commit mass slaughter of civilians. /s

hell, when it comes to hamas, “govern” is an opinion too

intensely_human,

“rule” might be the right verb here

Earthwormjim91,

No, Hamas is a fucking terrorist group that hasn’t allowed an election since they staged a coup in 2007. They kill civilians and use civilian infrastructure as military strongpoints.

The first is ideologies, the second is location.

Kilnier, in whats a song you heard for the first time recently that gave you a powerful reaction?

Harmony Parking Lot Song - Johnny Hobo and the Freight Trains

“Here’s to our lives being meaningless And how beautiful it is Because freedom doesn’t have a purpose”

Really that whole album. Taught me a lot about how to be ok with being broken.

A phone I can use almost anywhere.

Access to most of mankind's knowledge at my fingertips.

Weather and radar in seconds.

intensely_human, in What makes a smartphone useful to you?

My smartphone is mega useful to me:

  • Step tracking. I can see trends in how much physical activity I’m getting
  • Alarm clock
  • Reminders and lists. I use features like “Remind me at 7 pm that I need to do X” many times per day
  • Google maps and especially transit directions are incredible. Being able to download offline maps is great too for when I’m traveling
  • Ultra high resolution camera in my pocket
  • Google’s been great for the last 20 years. Now GPT-4 is my go-to when I have a quejaron about anything
  • Being able to call people is handy

If you’re satisfied with what you have, by all means stick with it.

If your current setup is stopping you from doing something you want to do, or is holding you back from progress in something you care about, look around for solutions. Many other pieces of tech can fill in what a smartphone does, but in separate pieces. I think there is some value in having those separate pieces.

Like a smoker telling you not to smoke, I encourage you to find alternatives to the smart phone for daily life while typing to you from a smartphone.

Daviedavo,

I’m a smoker and I take offense to your comment. Winners never quit and quitters never win! Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em! /s

If nothing else, it’s a portable connection to your desktop. I have telegram on my mobile devices, and I dictate my thoughts into the app and then curate them on my desktop

Portable web browser to read books on. That’s all I use mine for, except for the occasional text message / phone call. I got by fine for a long while with just my laptop, but reading on my phone is just a lot more convenient in a lot of cases. Like when you’re walking, or running, or standing, or laying down. It’s a pain in the ass to read from a laptop while walking, I’ve almost dropped the poor thing too many times to count.

Nemo, in What makes a smartphone useful to you?

It’s a portable game system that also acts as a web browser, ebook reader, MP3 player, digital camera, and instant messenging platform.

On the downside, they also receive voice calls.

It generally does everything your desktop computer does, but you can do it while you’re on the shitter.

I’m not even kidding.

Tedesche,

This. It’s basically a pocket PC. It’s useful for all the reasons a computer is, but it’s more portable than a laptop.

teichflamme,

Navigating the web sucks in comparison though
