That article cites no sources, and the FDA has retracted requiring warnings for products containing olestra

When removing the olestra warning label, the FDA cited a six-week P&G study of more than 3000 people showing the olestra-eating group experienced only a small increase in bowel movement frequency compared to the control group.The FDA concluded that “subjects eating olestra-containing chips were no more likely to report having had loose stools, abdominal cramps, or any other GI symptom compared to subjects eating an equivalent amount of [potato] chips”
I remember Conan O’Brian doing a joke about this. He said something like “Many people reported having explosive diarrhea after eating an entire family sized bag of Doritos with Olestra. Oddly enough, those eating a family sized bag of regular Doritos without Olestra… also experienced explosive diarrhea.”
You’re right it wasn’t a very scholarly article, that article was just the first thing that pops up on a Google search meant for people who weren’t familiar with Olestra, was mostly intended as a joke.
To take it more seriously though, a lot of those studies took place after a formulation change, so the later incarnations may have been better. It’s also possible that some of the reports came from people consuming large amounts of it at once. The studies I saw that didn’t show much difference all had a relatively small amount of chips ingested (see studies cited by article here www.acsh.org/news/1996/…/whats-the-story-olestra#…), for instance one of these studies was a double blind crossover with only 2 Oz of chips. I’m not aware of studies that would simulate downing a whole can of Pringles with Olestra at once. It was often included in snack foods that people don’t always moderate themselves on. Many of these studies, like the one you cite, were run by the manufacturer so important to be skeptical of the methods. They apparently started to fortify it with fat soluble vitamins to address concerns it could exacerbate deficiencies of those vitamins (besides basic science which should logically suggest this would happen, there’s evidence to back that up as well jn.nutrition.org/article/…/fulltext). The principle of every stool softener on the market now is that it’s something your body cannot absorb that will remain in the gi tract, eat enough Olestra or anything like it and it’ll have an impact on your stool consistency, just a matter of dosing. Animal studies also suggested it doesn’t cause weight loss and may even lead to increased weight. In the end it stopped being sold in the US altogether, because why go to all that trouble for something that probably doesn’t have any benefit.
It’s tough though, common symptoms are common. Many side effects you see on medications or things like Olestra may not even have anything to do with the product and were just coincidence or nocebo effect.
I wish I could deny this, but no: I remember spirting a bit out on my parents’ carpet in my late 20s one time when I came down with a sudden case of norovirus.
Another fun fact to go with that is that upon realising that I couldn’t go much more than 5 minutes without peeing pure brown liquid out my ass, I did end up just laying in the bath tub for a few hours and let it trickle out whenever it wanted to.

Rule #1 of being in a relationship is learning to listen and empathize with your partner. Just sit, and listen quietly, and tell them “that really sucks, I am so sorry, I’m here for you” It’s really that simple. Most of us are techy and leap to a solution because that’s how our brains are wired but they just want someone to listen. Just listen
ya, I think the person b4 you is jumping to conclusions a bit. What matters is what works for the couple, not some generalized assumption about their dynamic. The meme could have been in jest and if we want to give OP the benefit of the doubt here then it probably is
Fair, but let’s be honest, most of the time a partner may not want to hear about a solution because they first want compassion and understanding. Be willing to listen, and your partner will talk about a solution when they are ready.
I can’t speak to “most of the time” as I only have experience with my relationships. In my current one, problem solving and empathy both are used to great results.
The problem is 9 times out of 10, your problem solving won’t help because they’ve already thought of the fix or you don’t have enough of the nuance involved to offer a viable solution. So to insist on offering, means that your partner now has to balance your ego and how to tell you “yeah I know” or why your idea won’t work.
Top the rational thinker, the problem is “I need to vent my emotions in a healthy manner” and the rational solution is “listen” and if the problem transitions from “I need to vent” to “I need help” then you can work on a solution together.
If you want to vent, or gain some compassion and care, and you’re talking about your problems to a problem solver - say it.
Don’t say “I have problem A and I don’t need solutions”. Say “I know what to do with this, but it’s very frustrating and I need your support”. Yes, just like that. Admit, with words, that you want them to care for you. That’s it.
If you’re a problem solver, and you know the other person is often willing to just vent, or if you’re not completely sure your advice is wanted, ask it.
Don’t say “Just do B, problem solved”. Say “I might have some ideas on how to help you. Do you want my advice or should I just be there for you?”. And then if they want it - go for it! Don’t expect them to be ignorant of simple solutions; most likely they already thought them over, and either dismissed them for reasons not obvious to you from the first glance, or they already made it part of their plan.
Talk such things through, it will do wonders. For both of you.
I completely agree that you need to communicate. But that is outside the issue posed by the previous poster who said that it’s too emotionally taxing to just listen when you want to problem solve. Their comment implies that the conversation has been had, they know their partner just needs to vent, but being the listener their partner needs will cause “compassion fatigue”
So I attempted to rephrase it so that the “rational problem solver” could satisfy their “need to problem solve in contradiction to what their partner needs” by presenting it in a way that listening, is in fact the solution, to the problem at hand.
For those who refer to themselves as ‘their nature to fix things’: you know who else just goes out of control fixing things and can’t stop? cancer cells. They don’t do too well in reading the room either. You are more than just a cell. You have ears to listen and eyes to read and a brain capable of understanding how empathy works.
