€300 euro for a device with such low specs seems like a pretty bad deal to me. I just looked online and the first result was a Surface Pro 6 with 8GB RAM and 256 GB of storage for the same price.
Because those specs don’t sound like something you would get on a recent device. I thought 8 GB RAM and 128 GB storage was the minimum now for Windows devices but I guess I’m wrong.
It’s a bit older, but the other comments kind of convinced me that MS just released a severely underpowered piece of hardware as the “budget option”.
Kind of untypical for them, especially considering that the surface devices are supposed to compete with ipads and Windows 11 is supposed to run on these things.
That’s a question for a web developer, which I am not. I would expect it to be the max common resolution width. A quick Google shows that modern ultrawides are 5120x1440. So that’s probably why.
Lemmy does not use the entire screen width. The way it has been embedded in the page means that image takes up only 850 pixels of horizontal space so it could be 5x smaller and no one would be able to see the difference.
Lemmy really should be automatically resizing the images (on the server) when they are uploaded, not every single time the community is viewed (in the browser).
it’s not. the lemmy-ui max width for the poster element is far smaller than that (1104x960). in fact, the poster element is set to be a near-square (displays as rectangular in web and mobile web on the page header), as it also displays in the sidebar and in mobile apps as a square if the image is. most mods simply assume it’s a rectangle and upload a rectangular image.

No way, if you dont already have that, its a complete waste of money. 300€ is not little! I bought a Clevo NV41MZ for that, which has 16GB RAM, 500GB SSD, i7 CPU and is supported by Coreboot

Nope not at all. The built in and by Manjaro maintained packagemanager pamac bricks systems. Has not bricked mine since i use pacman instead.
The packages are just the arch packages delayed by a few days which makes it incompatible with the (by default enabled an encouraged to use) AUR.
Everyone fully missing the point here. This is the banner image for !linux (that’s not where we are right now for the record), and it has a normal JPEG size of 7.7MB. When it’s served as WebP it’s 3.8MB. OP is correct that this is very stupid and wasteful for a web content image. It’s a triple-monitor 1440p wallpaper that’s used verbatim, and it should instead be compressed down to be bandwidth-friendly. I was able to get it to 1.4MB at JPEG quality 80, and when swapping it out in dev tools and performing A/B testing I can’t tell the difference. This should be brought to the attention of a mod on that community so it can stop sucking people’s data for no reason.
It could be resized too. 5120x1440 is way too big for a website banner. There’s no reason to go more than double the size it will actually be displayed at. That would bring it down to a couple hundred KB.

Sorry for being a bit of a dick, I think you mean that the file “is 3.8MB”.
“mb” would mean millibit, 3.8millibit is an impossibly small file size, and would never exist practically (though I an sure that with some clever maths a zip bomb could be designed so that one bit of data could be compressed into 3.8millibits)
MB is the proper shorthand for MegaByte, a decent file size for a high quallity pucture, depending on the format and compression.
Unless we analyze the image, and determine the image format and compression settings we have no idea of if 3.8MB is a resonable size of the file or not, and the mods have hidden a rar file in the picture file, it is highly improbable that would be the case however.
I usually use Lemmy at my smartphone with 4G that was released 3 years ago, I’m happy with it, and I don’t need other one more new and expensive.
The area of 4G is very congested, then the connection is slower in peak hours.
Only rich people has last medium and high end smartphone with 5G, and live in area with that coverage.
I live now in downtown, and just got slow fiber connection 3 months ago, there are a lot buildings with only ADSL in this area, and it’s the capital.
Maybe you are lucky, with good connection.
Is not so hard to optimize the image for everyone in the world, and maybe put a link to original big image of you want.
There’s a lot of ways to optimize, like changing resolution, reduce colors, clean image. And compression, using webp lossy 95% you got a very small file that looks very close to the original, usually got less than 1MB.
Today’s web is very bloated for no reason, and very slow in old computers. Browsers are the main RAM eaters.
You still need all the physical space that two PCs require except for the box which is only a small part of it. You still need all the peripherals for two people and once the 3060s are in it the power difference will be negligible between one or two PCs. On top of that you have all the inconvenience and problems that using in multiseat brings. Network gear is dirt cheap and maintaining two PCs is less hassle Vs this too.
Personally I think at the end of the day you’re better off with two PCs even if the second one is a cheap second hand one. Especially since I assume the GPUs mean they’re planning on gaming on it.
When you have like 30 kids in a class and a limited budget then yeah, makes a lot of sense to come up with solutions like this.
For these two though if I knew them I’d just straight up give them a second PC for free to save them the hassle. You can do amazing things with refurbished PCs when budget and space constraints are a problem.
Not only for saving money, as when we upgrade the PC, I’m going to be able to sell off most of the components that get replaced, but space savings is also a big part of it. We’re going to be buying an RV to live full time in soon, and the less space it takes up, the better.
Plus, we have used it in this configuration for almost two years now, and it has worked without issue (EasyAntiCheat doesn’t play nice, but we don’t play many games that use it anyway). And honestly at this point, I kind of enjoy the challenge lol
You could have a look at ex-business slimline PCs or laptops if two cases are out of the question. They’ll take up less space overall than the typical PC case and are usually pretty power efficient. The former can also be upgraded if you are careful with what you choose and find the right slimline GPUs to fit in said cases. This is what I used to do for my kids particularly with ex-Dell PCs.
The thing is that you’re not going to get a whole lot for your old parts, certainly not more than the benefit you gain by having a second PC, as by the time you sell it the parts would have depreciated in value quite a lot. But, it’s neat I guess that PCs allow you to do stuff like this even if it would result in a bit of frustration.
If you are lucky enough, borgbackup could deduplicate and compress the data enough to fit a 1tb drive. Depending on the content of course, but it’s deduplication & compression is really insanely efficient for certain cases. (I have 3 devices with ~900GB each (so just shy of 3TB in total) which all gets stored in a ~400gb borgbackup)
It’s going to take a little work here, but I have a large drive on my plex, and a couple of smaller drives that I back everything up to. On the large drive get a list of the main folders. You can do a “du -h --max-depth=1 | sort -hk1” on the root folder to get an idea of how you should split them up. Once you have an idea, make two files, each with their own list of folders (eg: folders1.out and folders2.out) that you want to go to each separate drive. If you have both of the smaller drives mounted, just execute the rsync commands, otherwise, just do each rsync command with the corresponding drive mounted. Here’s an example of my rsync commands. Keep in mind I am going from an ext4 filesystem to a couple of ntfs drives, which is why I use the size only. Make sure and do a dry run or two, and you may or may not want the ‘–delete’ command in there. Since I don’t want to keep files I have deleted from my plex, I have it delete them on the target drive also.
