FutileRecipe, in I have started using fedora silverblue

then rebased to ublue image because it has flatpak included in the image.

From Silverblue’s Getting Started Guide:

Flatpak is the primary way that apps can be installed on Fedora Silverblue (for more information, see flatpak.org). Flatpak works out of the box in Fedora Silverblue…

Just seems very odd to distrohop for one main reason (flatpak in this scenario), without even checking if that reason is available in your current distro…which it is, out of the box.

uzay,

Tbf I think it’s very easy to rebase a Fedora Silverblue install to ublue or vice versa

FutileRecipe,

Yeah, I’m not saying it’s hard, just illogical. To me, it came across similar as: “I’m moving to this other distro because they have Firefox.” Your current distro also has Firefox, so why are you moving again?

uzay,

For sure. I just meant that it’s just putting in a command and waiting for a bit, so I could understand doing it on a whim more than if it was a full reinstall. Doesn’t make any sense but it’s also not a big deal.

I need to play around with Silverblue and other immutable distros. Been considering them for a family member that is interested in switching to Linux.

Glad it’s been good to you so far!

This one’s for Gnu!

haroldstork, in how do i efficiently attach audio to an image

This might depend on where you’re uploading/how you’re playing this file, but you could add a thumbnail to the audio file? I know that vlc and mpv will play your audio file and show the thumbnail, but I’m not sure if YouTube would take that. Not sure if this is exactly what you’re looking for but it is pretty efficient.

AMillionNames, in Is anyone using awk?

awk is supposed to be simpler. If it isn’t, just use your favorite scripting language. It comes from a period of time when a lot of the scripting languages weren’t as easy to use or readily available.

eager_eagle, in [Resolved] Why does the font on Lemmy.world look like an eyesore?
@eager_eagle@lemmy.world avatar

I use and recommend the Alexandrite UI a.lemmy.world

mmababes,

The font issue is affecting other websites I go to as well.

I installed the mscorefonts (sudo apt install ttf-mscorefonts-installer) but still having this issue.

tastysnacks, in Terminal Utility Mega list!

Somewhat simple?!?! I feel the disrespect.

UNWILLING_PARTICIPANT, in Is anyone using awk?

I use awk a good bit. Not as much as when I was doing data work, though. It’s better than cut at splitting on whitespace in many contexts. Lots of other nice uses like variable scope, regex, and summing

WalrusByte, in Is anyone using awk?
@WalrusByte@lemmy.world avatar

Sometimes I copy and paste an awk command from online, but I can never remember how to write it myself

cybersandwich,

I’m convinced no one actually knows how to write awk. It’s all copy and pasted from the web.

caseyweederman,

I am very, very slowly chiseling it into my long-term memory. I feel like Rincwind.

Mikelius, in Gentoo goes Binary (packages)

Been using Gentoo on my server for over a decade now and probably won’t ever leave the compiling front, especially with a 12-core/24-thread CPU making it go as quick as regular binary updates on my mint laptop… But that being said, in happy to see them considering to do this. It’ll bring in some folks who are afraid of (or just dislike) compiling everything from source. I think the biggest packages that’d benefit from this are definitely the browsers and desktop environments.

TrivialBetaState, in Does Wayland really break everything? (Nate Graham's OG post ref'd in the Phoronix article)

I have been using wayland on kde the last two years on Debian and MX Linux with zero issues. My general usa includes coding, music production, Libre office and web browsing. So, no much gaming, if that is your concern.
