nickwitha_k, in What are you most excited when it comes to linux in 2024?

I’m looking forward to hardware and firmware hacking on a Framework laptop.

Holzkohlen, in Is linux good for someone tech illererate.

I am very curious about the type of person who would rather use a phone than a computer. I am already getting annoyed just typing these two sentences on my phone, because I know hoe much more convenient this would be on my computer.

Swipe typing. Also most people I know are the same

TrivialBetaState, in Is linux good for someone tech illererate.

For someone as tech illiterate as my mom, I’d advise against trying it. But you are here and my mom would never know that Lemmy is a thing. You also ask about Linux.
I’d guess that you will have great fun using and appreciating what Linux and the foss communities have created.

Teppichbrand,

I put Linux Mint on my wifes, her parents and my parents computers, they all are somewhat to absolutely tech illiterate. I have to remind them to update once in a while and new software gets installed by me. But apart from that, everyone is happy with their rocksolid day to day system. Windows wouldn’t make anything easier, neither for me nor for them.

Potajito, in USB webcam lagging only in Zoom?

Probably the web app works better than the native app. Also, try the flatpak if you still prefer native, it’s better than what’s on the repos imo.

It does work better for me in general. The video is no longer slow… unless I start using a virtual background, then it gets really sluggish. (Firefox.)

Edit: For those who don’t use Arch bytheway, yay is an “AUR helper:” basically a frontend for our package manager that adds support for building packages from source.

I am waiting for Plasma 6 too. Maybe it will ship with Fedora 40 🤔

I hope so

And I am looking forward to Ubuntu server 24.04

saigot, (edited ) in Is linux good for someone tech illererate.

Depends on just how illiterate imo.

Here’s a good usecase:

My mum is completely tech illiterate, I have to teach her how to every task individually, and she has to write them down and follow them step my step. Tasks like emailing a document are a challenge. Linux is great for her. She isn’t used to windows anyway, and Linux makes it harder for her to accidentally make damaging changes, collect viruses or experience unexpected ui updates. It has much less maintaince, so it’s a lot less work for me to manage the system.

Here’s a bad usecase:

You are a user who can do the basics of using a website, install new apps, use usb drives etc etc. You are used to windows ui like where to find apps, where the close button is etc. You dont have a tech friend set up your stuff but if something goes wrong you are boned. This isn’t a good use unless you are interesting in becoming more tech literate (its easier to learn, if you can google your problems).

Yes. Linux is good enough for everyone, whether they like it or not. :)

Have you looked at Hyprgreen? It should be exactly what you’re after.

Pantherina,

Oh noooo, so I have a useless project now? But I guess I will just copy what I need and make it my own.

Thanks!

Atemu, (edited ) in (solved) I can't get my linux system to run properly
@Atemu@lemmy.ml avatar

If this is a VM, video playback stutters do not surprise me one bit. There’s many layers between the video and the image you see on screen here and they’re not optimised for viewing fidelity. This is likely not due to Linux but because you’re running this inside a with an emulated GPU. GUIs in VMs usually suck.

Optional codecs won’t help for Youtube since they serve royalty-free codecs such as VP9 or AV1 most of the time rather than patent-encoumbered codecs such as H.264 and free codecs are always installed.
That would also not fix stutters, only videos not playing back at all (because there’d be no decoder that could).

If this is a VM, installing the Nvidia driver also won’t do anything because the machine has no access to your host’s GPU. Not that the nvidia driver would change anything about videos since no sane browser supports their proprietary crap driver, so it’s software decoding either way.

You should try this on real hardware. You technically don’t even need to install as most GUI distros have a graphical installer with Firefox etc. pre-installed that you can use to test this.

If you have an Nvidia GPU, I’d recommend you to try !pop_os.

sxan, in USB fingerprint sensors with Linux support?
@sxan@midwest.social avatar

Some of the Yubi keys have fingerprint sensors, and they have good Linux support.

Tibert, in USB fingerprint sensors with Linux support?

The issue is that even the same brand can have multiple USB fingerprint scanners, which may not all work.

From a 4y old reddit thread some person found a fingerprint scanner which worked, but some other person who had a similar one didn’t get it ot work.

rem26_art, in Switching to Debian on my gaming pc
@rem26_art@kbin.social avatar

Idk how well Debian stable would work, but Debian Sid might be a bit easier to work with in terms of games with it being more on the bleeding edge.

There's also Linux Mint Debian if you want to stay in the Debian universe, but you'd get more of the ease of use of Mint.

Me personally, I'm using Fedora for gaming and I haven't really had many issues with it. If you're feeling adventurous, you could try Fedora or Nobara, which is a more gaming focused spinoff of Fedora

Pantherina,

Debian is very manual in like everything. But Linux Mint uses Cinnamon which uses X11 for a loong time and that is pretty bad for anything modern with Graphics Cards

rem26_art,
@rem26_art@kbin.social avatar

True, but there's always the option of installing KDE or something else with Wayland support

Pantherina,

What does Linux mint have what debian doesnt? I can only think of the deb firefox and the timeshift backups which are both really neat

dragnet,

Just convenience in the form of focusing on a user-friendly out of the box experience, really. That’s enough for me to use it over Debian on desktop, though I like Debian for servers.

Pantherina,

But Debian for servers is also a pain.
