I like distro chooser, but the analysis seems off. It always recommends some mainstream distro that I end up hating after extended use. I’ve finally found one I like, but it was through brute force, not from some list somewhere or from asking in forums.
I believe the biggest difference between Linux distributions for beginners will be the DE (desktop environment), you can change it in any distro you choose, but usually there is a DE that is optimized or customized as standard for each distribution. Some DE are very different from the Windows interface. I highly recommend using Cinnamon, Mate or KDE, the transition from Windows to Linux will be smoother in my opinion. The DE also includes a suite of applications such as an office suite, browser, administrative and customizable tools, which will also impact your experience. As other said before Linux Mint is a great option, it is stable and friendly. There is LMDE which is Mint with Debian under the hood instead of Ubuntu if you care about use a non-enterprise based distro, but that is another discussion.
Yes, there is always something that won’t work. This often happens with Windows (not too often, but it happens), but most often with Macs. Linux is quite buggy in the userspace area, I usually find bugs or crashes within an hour of using any linux distro. The one with the FEWER bugs is definitely Debian. But it does that by not using hacks or beta drivers or software. This creates a rock solid architecture, but some hardware won’t work (in my case, it was the sound chip for an intel J-series cpu that required a third party patch to work and recompile the kernel – while Ubuntu ships with that patch by default, but ubuntu has way more other bugs all around).
So at the end, you will have to ask yourself if you want Linux because it’s the right thing to do and use, or you just don’t want to be bothered with ideology, and just use Windows and be done with it. I’ve asked myself that question and the answer is two fold: as a daily browser laptop, that doesn’t depend on third party hardware, I just use my Macbook Air. It’s a great laptop to have around in front of the TV, or traveling. For third party hardware dependency, and video editing, I use Windows with an nvidia card. For everything else, I use Linux. I have 8-9 computers, most run Linux. I create databases with it, I do some photo editing, financials etc.
Most here will recommend Linux Mint and it’s what I use now after trying many different versions over the years. There’s a simplicity to Mint that just works especially well for those just surfing and doing office tasks. I’ve given away old work laptops with just mint installed as most people just need a web browser and it works great for that.
MS office can be used in your web browser or you can switch to Libre Office which should open most of your office files.
If you have a old laptop or computer I recommend trying to install Mint there first to try it out. It’s pretty easy to start out there first before trying dual boot. You might be surprised at how quick your older laptop works with Mint in the process.
I use dual boot on my machines but most of the use these days is to get to a web browser so I find I rarely boot into windows now.
You will find Firefox is the default web browser but you can add Chrome to Mint if that’s your browser of choice.
Many will say what about the privacy issues with Chrome but many still use it. I’ve switched back to Firefox myself and I like it better for my Android phone.
I started of on Linux Mint, had a couple of niggles with it so I thought ‘let’s be a spoony and get Ubuntu.’ Got on pretty well with Ubuntu but there were a few minor things about Gnome I didn’t like. I’m now on Kubuntu and it’s the Goldilocks zone for me. It’s been about 18 months now since I abandoned Windows 7.
LMDE, MX, Ubuntu etc are based on Debian. Mint is based on Ubuntu, so Debian. Chimera/Endeavour are based on Arch, etc.
In the linux world, you have a linux kernel, systemd or init, a bunch of gnu utils, a window system like X or Wayland, whatever DE you want (Xfce, gnome, kde, name it) and a packaging system (apt, yum, pacman), but for me, it’s all the same.
If you want something different, try a BSD distro then? FreeBSD, OpenBSD, GhostBSD, etc
Considering pretty much all of the best distros are based on those three, probably the best you’ll get is trying BSD. I can’t think of a single distro not based on one.of the three that is still maintained.

It is a little sad that OpenBSD can’t optimize by P/E cores, I have been wanting to switch to OpenBSD but obviously Linux supports the most hardware, so I stay with Linux. It is nice that the makers NovaCustom seem to have done a good job creating a mostly open, standards compliance x86_64 computing platform.

Definitely! I feel as if they might be somewhat underappreciated currently, but I hope their efforts to open source will receive similar mainstream reach like what we’ve seem for System76 etc.

I have a small ZFS NAS that I built myself running Linux, and I would like to use it for file sharing and running applications like NextCloud. I prefer OpenBSD and its derivatives (like OmniOS) because it of its security-oriented features, especially things like ZFS and zones, but I have not used it very much so I am not comfortable using an operating system I have not used before for something important like backing up my files.
I would like to switch my daily driver, a Linux laptop, to OpenBSD so I can get used to using it as an administrator, but I worry about OpenBSD being able to support the laptop hardware, especially things like WiFi, BlueTooth, and managing the battery, screen dimming, laptop lid, and so on. I have another Linux computer with a Radeon graphics card which connects to my TV that my children use for video games, and watching streaming video, and I would like to switch this to OpenBSD as well but I worry that it will not be able to run Steam games very well.

From what I’ve read, running games on OpenBSD is a lot less mature compared to running games on Linux. Though, perhaps it’s worth noting that cloud gaming solutions (like Google Stadia in the past) are known to work great on OpenBSD. Not sure if you would want that, though.
(On a more general note) I definitely agree that OpenBSD works wonderfully on the server side of things. But I’ve gotten skeptical over time to its feasibility as a desktop OS. Note that I’m well aware that OpenBSD’s developers use it as their daily drivers, so I definitely recognize the possibility. However, when it’s lacking features like Secure Boot (or any form of Trusted and/or Measured Boot for that matter), I just find it hard to justify putting it on something like a laptop that I carry around all the time. I hope that you can prove to me that my logic/understanding is flawed and that I should reconsider the use of OpenBSD as a desktop OS.

ZFS is itself a security feature because of how well it guarantees the fidelity of your data. That said, ZFS support on BSD is generally much better than on Linux
For the reasons you stated, I can’t use OpenBSD on my daily work laptop, so I don’t think I will ever really have a chance to give it a fair trial or learn more about it, which is unfortunate.
Do you happen to know if this goes beyond what Btrfs(/Bcachefs) provides on the Linux side of things?
I think someday Btrfs or BCacheFS might have as many features as ZFS, but for now ZFS is still state-of-the-art, as far as I know. RAID-Z is one ZFS feature I use that is not fully implemented in Btrfs yet. All other ZFS features that I use are also available with Btrfs.
😅, but QubesOS isn’t a derivative of OpenBSD either. It might have inspired some of its parts, but fundamentally it’s a completely different beast.
