BRINGit34, in Distro for POS

Are you planning on using them as a pos? I’m not sure if an open pos os exists

errorlab,

Yeah, but the software is self hosted and accesed via browser. I think I’m going with everyone’s recommendations and going Debian.

I’d go with something based on Gentoo so you would have an easy install process and they would have to live with the pain of compiling from source.

ransomwarelettuce,

Gentoo has turned into an hibrid between binary-source unfortunately, so I would go for something spicier like LFS.

Blackmist, in TIL that operating system Linux is an example of anarcho-communism

So is Linus Lenin or Stalin?

Cowbee,

Neither, the title specifically states Anarcho-Communism, not Marxism-Leninism. Closest analog would be any other AnCom that created a large publicly available service.

Mandy, in What's your current favorite distro that isn't Arch, Debian or Fedora?

Solus as the Almighty Todd says “it just works” And that comes from someone which always has at least one problem, that problem being gaming.

It aint solved mind you but it works marginable better on it.

Example, anno 1404, no matter what distro or silly protondb config, or if I use a new steam profile or fresh distro , works.1 out of 10 times.

But Solus, it just works, no hoop jumping needed

Before Chromebooks, my towns school system had netbooks which were pitifully slow on Windows. They installed Ubuntu instead. The netbooks still sucked, but probably sucked a lot less.

I’ve set up Linux machines for a school that had ancient computers and $0 computer lab budget. Within 2 years, they purchased new Apple computers.

TCB13, (edited ) in When Windows 10 dies, I am going to jump ship over to Linux. Which version would you recommend for someone with zero prior experience with Linux? **Edit: Linux Mint it shall be.**
@TCB13@lemmy.world avatar

Relax, Microsoft will eventually fix Windows 11, release a decent Windows 12 or extend the support for Windows 10 for so long you won’t be needing Linux anytime soon. :P

My recommendation goes for Debian and install all your software using Flatpak. This way you can get a rock solid OS and all the latest software. Ubuntu might be interesting as it is mostly beginner friendly and has a more cohesive all-in-one solution ou of the box.

Most of the top answers are good so I will emphasize something that others have mentioned as well, which is that one of the lovely things about Linux is that your GUI, your window manager or desktop environment (different things I know, don’t @ me) is up to you.

My personal favorite is xfce, but obviously a lot of people like KDE, Cinnamon, and Mate (mah-tay). There’s of course a whole world of options beyond those, when you’re choosing a distribution, go to the distro’s website, and look at the screenshots. If they have different versions for different desktop environments or window managers, look at all the screenshots. Try to pick one that has a look and layout that looks comfortable to you.

Also backup your home directory. And remember you can always distro hop.

dino, in Solene'% : NovaCustom NV41 laptop review

Your experience with FreeBSD compared to OpenBSD is very similar to mine 5 years ago. Didn’t manage to get FreeBSD working but OpenBSD install was pretty easy. Although the performance still sucked compared to Linux.

throwawayish,

Your experience

Just in case*, I’m just the middle-man that connects this specific article by Solène to the audience on Lemmy 😅. I’m sure you’re aware of this, but I just wanted to make sure.

Nvidia or AMD? If Nvidia I would especially suggest pop_OS, but really, either way that distro is great.

If you want to just work, just install xubuntu.

mesamunefire, in What's your current favorite distro that isn't Arch, Debian or Fedora?

Puppy Linux.

Seriously?!?

drislands,

No, this is clearly a joke.

sebsch,

I mean Mac users also believe their OS for being privacy focused… so it’s not quite sure this couldn’t make sense in a brain thinking this way.

DandomRude,

I hope so.

Fedora Atomic (Silverblue, etc.), with either KDE or Gnome.

Both look modern and should work on the hardware, and no customer can fuck it up

cfp, in What's your current favorite distro that isn't Arch, Debian or Fedora?

I love using Alpine Linux on my server. Super light and quick to start up.
