Nice. I keep forgetting to install it. Plasma is snappy as is

Samueru, (edited ) in What distros have you tried and thought, "Nope, this one's not for me"?

It pains me to say this, but voidlinux, though I’m still not in the stage of “this one is not for me”, it has potential and hopefully I can sort all the issues I’ve encountered so far.

I’ve tried multiple distros, and also used artix for a while so I’m used to not using systemd but man void is really another thing, this isn’t the first time I’ve used it, I tried it a year ago and gave up, recently I decided that I’m up for the challenge and began using it again, here’s what has happened so far:

Well right now I’m dealing with the pc freezing when quitting the user session, for some reason I need to exit i3 before logging out, otherwise the system freezes.

Also I wasn’t able to get a clean boot screen even though I had the typical kernel parameters quiet, loglevel, etc, it even prints info on the login prompt where I should be putting my username, though I managed to mitigate this a lot by passing a kernel parameter that tells it to use another tty for the boot messages.

file-roller is broken, I can’t compress some directories to 7zip, the weird thing is that it only happens to some directories and not all.

Though the very good news is that they fix issues very fast, puddletag was broken and they fixed it in like 2 hours after I reported the issue.

Edit: It is not just file-roller that is broken, it is all of 7zip on void, I can’t compress with xarchiver either

caseyweederman, in D-Bus overview

Wait. Is xfconf-query just a front-end for one branch of dbus?

caseyweederman,

Looks like xfconf merely shares the hierarchical structure. Still… Hm.

Firefox Translations is an add-on that helps translate websites in Firefox without using the cloud. Additionally, Firefox version 118 introduces a built-in translation feature, allowing you to perform translations locally within your browser, prioritizing your privacy and security. This feature enables you to effortlessly surf the web in your preferred language. For in-depth guidance on utilizing this feature, explore our Firefox built-in fullpage translation guide.

I think it is translated locally.

possiblylinux127,

shortdorkyasian, (edited ) in What distros have you tried and thought, "Nope, this one's not for me"?

Ubuntu when they first switched to Unity. I had been running Ubuntu for 2 or 3 years at that point, but I was already thinking about switching to Debian at the time. I hobbled along for a few weeks on that first version of Unity, but I didn’t like what I was seeing. I took the plunge into Debian, thinking, “If I’m going to have to learn something new anyways, I might as well try switching.”

Bread,

According to their feature support page for M2, it appears it works now.

using it on an M2 Mini now, they recently updated for support on M2 devices, the Air looked to have more marked as compatible than the Mini.

mofongo, in Can anyone share their experience with Asahi as a Daily Driver?

I did dual boot and I can recommend trying it if u have the space. The way the boot menu on mac works, you won’t notice anything if you continue using macOS. Most of the hardware does work but there are some minor issues. By default I think it uses KDE which is fine but compared to windows or MacOS window manager it sometimes does funny stuff. At least on my system

GustavoM, in I feel like breaking my windows install was a rite of passage
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

My “rite of passage” to the magical world of GNU/Linux was… well… boredom. My Windows install was run fresh, with TCPOptimizer, with some things removed out of its core… until I took the decision of “trying to figure out how to use Linux even if it means losing my sanity.”

…and here we are. Sanity is still intact tho…

…I think. :^)

ultra, in What distros have you tried and thought, "Nope, this one's not for me"?

MicroOS. I didn’t switch from losedows to still have my PC restart on me while I was working. Also, it kinda broke and was annoying to configure, and had way too little documentation.

BCsven,

Did you use this tool ? Simplifies ignition/combustion opensuse.github.io/fuel-ignition/edit

ultra,

Isn’t that just for the initial install? I was talking about post-install configuration

BCsven,

If you scroll to the bottom in the combustion section you add packages you want, and custom scripts. OpenSUSE also haa auto yast for cloning your system and applying it to another machine

mvirts, in Redox OS - an OS built entirely out of Rust

Slap a Firefox on top (and time travel to when ff is all rusted) and we’ll be coming for ChromeOS. But will windows be completely rusted first? 🙃

ChiefSinner,

I think the main reason Firefox isn’t on there is because redox os doesn’t use Wayland and x11. Porting firefox would be a massive effort unfortunately.

neytjs, in Why do you use the terminal?

I use the terminal in a variety of circumstances (like working on Node.js and other programming projects) where there is either no good GUI alternative or using a CLI is actually faster. I’ve been using computers since 1989 and my first operating system was MS-DOS, so the thought of using a CLI when necessary doesn’t bother me.

ook_the_librarian, in Why do you use the terminal?
@ook_the_librarian@lemmy.world avatar

Nice choice. Try to stick to the standard repository, kinda like the Play store on android.

I believe Mint tries to have minimal dependence on the command line. But usually it’s easier to help others solve problems with the command line since that is easier to write out than how to click through menus. So don’t let it scare you too much.

The internet is a friendlier place now, at least in the linux help-o-sphere. People don’t let others post destructive “lessons” for people to learn anymore.

That was comment I wrote in a thread about distro recommendations. I think it provides a context in which CL has a clear advantage over GUI.
