As a tiling WM newbie regolith was a godsend to get my feet wet. When you’re used to DEs, the amount of stuff to learn to get to a usable set-up is overwhelming.
Nope, it isn’t bad, just a different kind of philosophy, IMHO. Some people would prefer to do everything themselves and tailor stuff to their needs, while others are OK with some stuff being preconfigured.
The great thing about Linux DEs is that it doesn’t matter if it’s conventionally bad, it matters that it works for you. You could use the cubic alt tab animation and control your computer through seances for all anyone cares. As long as you can do what you want just send it and use what’s best for you.
As someone who browses KBin/Lemmy fairly often, I can't say I ever see massive amounts of Linux talk even on the All tab. Usually it's just pictures of cats and star-trek memes
Wile I agree that it’s not Wayland’s fault, I also think that people acting like X11 was obsolete yesterday and everyone should immediately stop using it simply because Wayland exists, while that is still true, are not helping the situation any
It’s a giant mess of interconnected programs that could theoretically still be disentangled, but in practice never are. It was very quickly and exclusively adopted by pretty much every major distro in a short period of time, functionally killing off any alternatives despite a lot of people objecting. Also, its creator was already pretty divisive even before systemd, and the way systemd was adopted kinda turned that into a creepy hate cult targeted at him.
There’s nothing actually wrong with systemd. I personally wish there was still more support for the alternatives though. Systemd does way more than I need it to, and I just enjoy having a computer that only does what I want.
I really hate that Windows does this. Which is why when I decide to switch a machine to Linux it’s the only OS allowed to boot to bare metal. Windows can go in a VM and suck it.
Not sure why, but your comment made me think about the first machine I switched to Linux. It was a laptop who’s fan eventually had a bad bearing and needed to be replaced. Luckily it was still under warranty, so I sent the laptop in to get the fan replaced, and received my laptop back with Windows installed on it… I was so livid.
