atmur, in Why are gnome devs like this?

My top priority for a desktop is stability, which puts Gnome squarely at the top of my list. Gnome may not get features first, but they’ll do it right in the long run.

The go-to meme is VRR on Wayland in Gnome, which is taking forever with a major roadblock being how the cursor is drawn on screen. KDE has VRR support now, but (surprise!) it doesn’t work properly when a cursor is on screen. So you can either have no implementation or a broken implementation. I don’t mind Gnome choosing not to ship a half-working feature. I also understand the KDE team’s decision to have something in place for some use cases even if it doesn’t consistently work, but that’s not what I personally want out of a desktop.

Both KDE and Gnome are fucking amazing projects, this circle-jerk of “gnome bad because development slow” is a waste of time. Let’s spend more time bullying Microsoft instead. Have any of you used the Windows desktop environment recently? It’s fucking trash.

jaschen, in AMA

So someone suggested to me that Linux is amazing for gaming.

I decided to split boot and installed Mint and attempted to play Forza Horizon 5. It literally runs like a potato. Also my Logitech steering wheel doesn’t work and has major input lag.

Since you know so little about Linux, my question is what are you having for dinner?

0x4E4F,
@0x4E4F@sh.itjust.works avatar

Have no idea, still haven’t had breakfast…

AProfessional,

I don’t use a wheel but FH5 does work well here.

jaschen,

I think my Nvidia mobile 3070ti card is being funky. I think I got it to run better after trying some ideas online, but there are lag spikes and the steering wheel still didn’t work. Just deleted Mint and decided against Linux gaming for now

AProfessional,

FWIW i played it on Linux launch week on a 3080, it actually crashed less than on my Windows install. But that’s fair there are a lot of variables that could cause issues.

nogrub,

i gues you use an laptop with that i guess you have an integrated gpu and one for offloading that leads to my question do you use prime-run ?

jaschen,

I was getting Prime-run not found. I forgot what else I did, but finally got it working. The lag spikes made it a bit unplayable esp since this setup is for my dedicated racing simulator.

shrugal, in A rough translation of the principle of Ubuntu is "humanity towards others". Another translation could be: "the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity".

I’m no fan of Ubuntu, but maintaining an LTS release and backporting security updates is actual ongoing work. Most distros don’t even provide an LTS release for that reason.

I’m not into programming, and I’m an LGBTQIA Ally. Just genuinely curious. Are 90% of Linux users really young white femboys with anime body pillows? Or is Lemmy just a heavily skewed demographic?

exoplanetary,
@exoplanetary@lemmy.world avatar

It’s mostly just a stereotype. I know plenty of young white femboys who use Windows, and I’m a Linux user who is young and white but definitely not a femboy. I would say 90% of Linux users probably know how to program though.

0x4E4F, (edited )
@0x4E4F@sh.itjust.works avatar

Or at least are very friendly with the terminal and know all sorts of scripting languages… which is not that far from programming either.

mexicancartel,

I think only 60% linux users know how to program

bitwaba,

Dual booters are fem-boys with anime body pillows.

Those brave enough to take the full plunge and single boot Linux are fem-men with anime body pillows.

greencactus,

No… The true Linux users are white, mid-40 men who only use Arch Linux on an old Thinkpad and who will comment “I use Arch BTW” under a video with a random dog eating a ball just to prove that the dog should use Arch as well, because it is objectively better than anything else.

bitwaba, (edited )

Yeah, that’s what I said. Fem-men with anime body pillows.

I use Arch BTW

greencactus,

You just made my day better, I had to laugh. Thank you ;)

GarlicToast,

Not so young anymore (🥲), not a femboy and no body pillows here. Been using Linux for almost 20 years now. More than 10 exclusivly Linux.

The young, single, femboys just has more time to creat more memes.

okamiueru,

My impression of linuxmemes (what’s the lemmy word for subreddit?) is mostly that it feels like the regular posters don’t use Linux. Either that, or it is automated and reposting stuff from 10-20 years ago that isn’t very accurate or relevant.

Heavily skewed demographic IMO. LGBTQ+ supportive liberals is what makes most of it, but I would bet that there are republican IT workers out there (or rightists, in general, if not from the US) or users that maybe like most of what the right has to offer, just don’t agree with everything all the way, like let’s say libre software.

And I stole the meme, I wouldn’t have used that image for the meme, I’m in no way into anime 😂. Sure, Akira and legendary stuff like that, but that’s just a really good movie TBH, it doesn’t matter if it’s anime or not.

AlpacaChariot,

It’s just Lemmy!

emergencyfood,

LGBT people are over-represented in IT, as it is less judgemental of such things compared to many other professions. Also, people who had to hide their identity, or question it, or read more about such hard to access topics, probably learned how to use the internet, and may have even developed an interest in fields like privacy and digital equality.

As for anime, Japan (and China, Korea etc.) are major electronics manufacturers and designers, so their culture has influenced the internet, and particularly the more nerdy parts of it.

But there are plenty of people with very different political views in the Linux community, from RMS’s infocommunism to Eric Raymond’s right-libertarianism.

Aux, in Year of Linux on the Desktop

The year of Linux was supposed to be somewhere in mid 1990-s…

Tixanou,
@Tixanou@lemmy.world avatar

The year of linux was 1991, since it was created there.

vsh,
@vsh@lemm.ee avatar

The only year when it peaked. Too bad it didn’t catch up to today’s standards.

Mango,

What are you smoking? Linux is better in literally every way.

vsh,
@vsh@lemm.ee avatar

Oh yeah? Explain why I can’t run league of legends, valorant, Fortnite, R6 siege, PUBG, faceit csgo, destiny 2, fiveM and hundreds more games if Linux is better in literally every way? (your words)

And why did I have trouble setting up wifi and sound drivers? Why did a simple update break my whole PC so much I had to reinstall windows again? Why superusers™ are always disrespectful and condescending? Why are kernel developers so disconnected from reality? Do I really need 999+ distros for every use case?

Maybe, a big MAYBE year 2100 will be the year of the Linux desktop. For now, it’s better to just stick with what’s been working for the past 30 years.

Oh I’ll be stomped for criticism, because I threatened the holy open source. Come on, hack me using your terminal like some 90’s kid and prove me wrong. Or don’t. I don’t care 💅🏿😘

Mango,

Obviously because those developers are specifically making that impossible. That’s not Linux’s issue.

Also I’ve played CSGO and R6 siege on Linux before with no issues.

Also valorant, Fortnite, and Destiny 2 are shit and made by companies that are practically hostile to environments they don’t have strict control with.

Why did you have trouble? Maybe because you suck. You don’t need to distro hop. Most of us do that for fun.

The real fact of the matter here is that you’re here to be a troll.

barrett9h,

Actually it was around mid 2000’s when it matured enough as a desktop environment to be used by a regular user. Since then it has been improving, and for the last decade or so I dare say it is even easier to use.

ExLisper, in This truly is the year of the linux desktop
