flatpandisk, in Never again

I have been lucky and haven’t seen this. What a horrible thing to do.

CosmicTurtle,

I haven’t seen this either. OP, you got a link? I’d love to see what kind of software is doing this.

turmacar,

It’s generally nothing big enough to have heard of unless you’re looking into whatever niche it fills.

Only example that comes to mind is mechanical keyboard stuff. For some of the smaller / one-off designs there was a habit of “if you need troubleshooting, here’s a discord link” instead of even minimal documentation. For “standard” stuff that used the same lil microcontrollers as everything else just a minor annoyance, but saw it with ones that used custom / no microcontroller too, where even a “you need X diodes, Y sprockets, etc” would’ve been nice.

Like OP tend to see it and move on and forget about it because it’s not worth it. The few times I really wanted to get some service running on a raspberry pi or arduino or whatever and tried the discord was a handful of ‘regulars’ swapping memes that were annoyed I wasn’t intimately aware of their codebase.

CosmicTurtle,

Troubleshooting I could see being in discord. But it shouldn’t be the only option.

I got the feeling this is mostly niche stuff or very new developers that don’t have GitHub experience.

You can integrate GitHub issues with discord. I imagine similar integrations exist with gitlab

nekusoul,
@nekusoul@lemmy.nekusoul.de avatar

Not exactly the same thing, but the xone (XBox One controller driver for Linux) project disabled Issues on Github and uses a Discord server instead. Which is stupid as heck, because I’m not going to join a Discord server just to check if someone has already encountered the same issue as me.

emc,

TrueCharts (third party app repository for TrueNAS) does this and it drove me crazy until I eventually gave up and moved everything to Docker. Lack of serious documentation was just one of the many reasons.

Evkob,
@Evkob@lemmy.ca avatar

Referring to femme-presenting people as “traps” is transphobic, originating in the idea that trans women are somehow disingenuous by showing their true selves to the world. Because horny cis straight guys might get horny about trans women (and that’s bad for some reason).

TheSanSabaSongbird,

I think this can be the case, but I also think intent has to matter. I don’t see any evidence that OP intends to be transphobic.

JoShmoe,

If I’ve offended you, I apologize. Certain words will affect people differently.

Bruncvik,

Agreed. I used to be the tech support for my family members. Everyone I switched to Mint Cinnamon stopped calling me. (That’s also when I realised my relatives never call me to share good news or to ask about me.)

Liz,

Start installing malware on their machines that reminds them to call every once in a while.

Blaster_M, in Your average Wine enjoyer

I would like MS Office to run in Linux… and not have to vomit even more money to Crossover to get it to work.

And when you play the “LibreOffice” card, I play the “Word doc with custom layout tables” trap card!

HeyLow,

Try freeoffice, I remember it having better compatibility with word docs

0x4E4F, (edited )
@0x4E4F@sh.itjust.works avatar

Which version? 2007 runs just fine. 2010 requres some custom libs, but there are tutorials (there is also a patch that makes it an endless free trial). 2013 is not a finished product IMO, so I haven’t used it all or tried in Wine. 2016… yeah, that’s a PITA to get working. One thing I can suggest is go with the MSVC++ installer from this link and go from there. You might also need x64dbg, but I seriously doubt it.

pelya,

MS Word past 2007 is not MS Word anymore. Microsoft fucked up the menu and the toolbar intentionally, to lock new users into their new fancy user interface with menus-as-buttons. LibreOffice is more MS Word from the usability standpoint than the MS Word 2016. Like, you can select Format - Paragraph and edit your paragraph formatting, all in one dialog, and not search for the right icon out of a hundred pictograms spread evenly over ten dynamic toolbars.

0x4E4F,
@0x4E4F@sh.itjust.works avatar

I completely agree, I like LibreOffice way more than MS Office. It’s basically got the pre 2007 look and feel, and that is what I like and what I’m used to.

I just happen to work on getting MS Office working on Wine for a small local company and know a thing or two about getting it working in Wine.

haui_lemmy,

On another note: why do we have open standards like jpeg and png but proprietary shit like docx?

0x4E4F,
@0x4E4F@sh.itjust.works avatar

MS took over that market in the 90’s when shit was settlig down after the UNIX wars and people didn’t actually have an alternative. MS came in and swooped the market.

It is hard to switch when ”the defaults"are in place.

haui_lemmy,

Thanks. Thats actually very interesting. Do you know if there is a good open alternative at this point?

jkozaka,
@jkozaka@lemm.ee avatar

I think odt is pretty good.

haui_lemmy,

Thanks for mentioning it. I had forgotten it exists since I barely use word processors atm.

Andrew15_5,
@Andrew15_5@mander.xyz avatar

What’s “custom layout tables”? Anyway, I now only play typst.app card, because I don’t use LO Writer anymore, only LO Calc for some stuff. Typst has a ton of scripting capability and granular customization, so it will probably beat your “custom layout tables” by a mile kilometer!

Typst is the future for document creation. Mark my words.

Zoot,

Do you know of any Google xcel alternatives? Something that still allows public viewing, and collaborative editing?

Andrew15_5,
@Andrew15_5@mander.xyz avatar

No, but you can allow read only access to your document on typst.app and you can collaborate with it too.

Hexarei,
@Hexarei@programming.dev avatar

I don’t know of any public ones, but you can always host your own copy of Collabora with an instance of Next cloud.

PropaGandalf,

You based chad. Typst is absolutely awesome. It made me ditch Libreoffice and LaTeX at the same time. Haven’t looked back since then.

Andrew15_5,
@Andrew15_5@mander.xyz avatar

Glad you’ve made the switch! If you want, you can hop into the discord server.

PropaGandalf,

I’m sorry but discord is a nogo for me. I’m already in the matrix room so feel free to join, we could use some more discussion ;)

Andrew15_5, (edited )
@Andrew15_5@mander.xyz avatar

Matrix room? Where? There is no official Matrix space.

I agree, I hate discord, but that’s where everybody is messaging, including authors. BTW, we had a “community call” a few days ago in the discord. It’s a monthly thing.

PropaGandalf,

No it is not official unfortunately. Just search for it. Maybe you could advertise the matrix room a bit :)

pryre, in Can't relate to be honest, I still use MBR boot

Start using and efistub and never worry about boot loaders again!

vox,
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

systemd-boot is a reasonable compromise. i like it

pryre,

The reality is that a bootloader will seemingly always be needed to account for difficult BIOS’ and legacy setups (I’m looking at you, dual-booted Ubuntu 20.04).

BeigeAgenda,
@BeigeAgenda@lemmy.ca avatar

Naah I just disable secure boot altogether, then you don’t have to worry about all that TPM security theatre.

Vash63,

You don’t need secure boot to use EFI. It’s better all around regardless of SB.

BeigeAgenda,
@BeigeAgenda@lemmy.ca avatar

Fair enough I don’t miss the old BIOS.

0x4E4F, (edited )
@0x4E4F@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yeah, but Windows 11 needs it.

Can be disabled though. Easiest way - use Rufus when burning the USB.

Fun fact, you can also install Win11 in MBR mode, no UEFI needed whatsoever.

0x4E4F,
@0x4E4F@sh.itjust.works avatar

Use Windows Update Blocker to block them.

tuxrandom,

At that point I'd just get rid of Windows entirely. I used to have it on my laptop, and the updates it installed after booting for the first time in months broke networking. I never used that install so I decided to use the storage space for more sensible things.

sorrybookbroke,

I was in that situation a while ago, so I booted in to try and keep it up to date. Well, in reality I booted into recovery mode as it decided to die. Anyway I’m now duel booting arch and tumbleweed

TheInsane42, in It happens 🤷
@TheInsane42@lemmy.world avatar

How?

No dual boot here, Windows is confined to a VM. Even in the ancient times I had dual boot, last century, Linux was always the default.

0x4E4F,
@0x4E4F@sh.itjust.works avatar

That is all good and fine, unless you need it to interact with hardware, which I do.

TheInsane42,
@TheInsane42@lemmy.world avatar

Then still you can set Linux as default. Lilo had an option to reboot with an option to set a 1 time default. (that was neat) On dual boot hardware, I always set the one I want to default boot, which is in my case always Linux. (must still have a dual boot laptop somewhere)

faercol,
@faercol@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

There’s also the possibility of selecting the last booted OS by default instead of a specific entry

TheInsane42,
@TheInsane42@lemmy.world avatar

I’m glad I never found that option. ;)

I have a few wifi adapters from china who only work properly under Linux lmfao

Did Microsoft actually infiltrate Lemmy or something? I’m hearing of issues about Linux that haven’t existed since the very first days of desktop Linux

Two2Tango,

The wifi chipset on my new MSI mobo isn’t supported on current LTS version of Mint - I had to install a more recent kernel, so there are still issues with newer hardware

0x4E4F,

Yeah, the Chinese stuff seems to work better under Linux… for some reason 😂. I one based on a Realtek chip (I think 🤔) and I couldn’t get passed a few hundred KB in Windows. Linux fried that baby, it did 1.5MB 😂.

I still have wifi woes on my old tablet. Works fine for a few minutes, then dies. Works fine in Windows. I’m about to reinstall on it. Maybe the next distro I try will work?

AMDIsOurLord,

This is probably some sort of firmware power management bug that the windows driver is working around. Try and see if you can find any documentation on it
