Paradox Intercative

balderdash9, in diminishing returns but here's day 5 of stock photos memes

Rant incoming: I cannot tell you how many times I’ve tried to create a meme and the stock image has the logo all over it. Search for anything on google images (spaceship, boat, man smiling, etc) and you will get a ton of stock images with the stock image stamp of annoyance on it. /rant

Mighty,
@Mighty@lemmy.world avatar

I … Don’t see the problem with the stamp or watermark… That’s kinda the point for me to be honest.

These pictures weren’t made for me, but I’ll use them to do what I want with them

balderdash9,

It’s fine if it’s not an issue for you. But for me, if I’m creating something, I want the image itself to look as clean and HD as possible. For a lot of my memes, the joke is in the image editing itself.

But all that is just my personal preference for my shit. The rant wasn’t meant as an attack

baggins,

If it’s that big a deal you can always go pay to license the image.

The real drowning is the Sudan civil war

craftyindividual,

The Darfur conflict was my first eye opener to major powers pissing around while genocide happened. In fact that conflict is still going on as recent as last year.

The dollar store destroys communities, it’s their fucking business model. Fuck the dollar store

seitanic,
@seitanic@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

How so?

unique_hemp,

In short, local stores cannot stay afloat anymore when 30% of their customers disappear.

MaxHardwood,

Local stores that were profiting off their customers and not giving back to the community lose 30% of their customers who weren’t benefiting in any way from a local store to more affordable options when available? Wow

unique_hemp,

I get what you’re saying, but the profits going to locals is objectively better for the community than them going to large corporations.

MaxHardwood,

That’s the point though. The profits don’t go to locals, they stay within the owner’s for their second cottage and new boat. Very rarely do local stores actually benefit anybody other than themselves.

unique_hemp,

They’re infinitely more likely to indirectly get back to the locals than if they were to go directly to a corporation on the other side of the country.

Franzia,

You’re almost there. Now what if the owner was a local? And he’s paying loans to the local bank? And his cottage is up the hill? It used to be like that. Hell, in my town many stores are like that… And they’re competing against DG.

MaxHardwood,

It used to be like that

You’re right, about 100 years ago it did used to be like that. Local banks aren’t a thing anymore. While Co-op banking institutions are better for the local community, they’re also investing in options outside the local community, further depleting the resources of the 30% of customers who shop at more affordable locations

Franzia,

You make a good point… But it’s also not black and white 100% or nothing. I can’t rely on a small shop to funnel money back into my town, no, however it might provide just a little bit more. Again, the owner’s boat and house has to go somewhere. If its here or nearby thats better than across the country.

In the news today a big box store is giving some money to some local environmental fund or something. The big box store probably broke a union if they’re trying to garner good news though.

BingoBangoBongo,

You don’t know many small town shop owners do you?

SigloPseudoMundo,

It’s also a question of food availability. Perhaps food deserts don’t matter to you and I doubt you’d care but when businesses get pushed out by dollar stores the selection and variety of fresh produce goes down while the quantity and variety of prepackaged & shelf stable garbage goes up.

Patquip,

Here’s an interesting video on it: youtu.be/vQpUV--2Jao?si=EZA7136NtNf6zLKi

BingoBangoBongo,

Yeah it’s a weird flex, bragging about supporting an exploitative business that price gouges essentials and kills small business all while shaming the people who are trapped by the very system.

SexyTimeSasquatch, in 30's wheel of pain

Everything hurting for no discernable reason isn’t normal at your age. The difference between your 20s and 30s is that in your 20s you don’t need to do anything to not hurt. In your 30s and beyond you’re gonna need to start taking care of yourself in order to not hurt. The pain is your body telling you something is wrong. Could be sleep apnea, hypertension, lack of activity or not enough recovery after activity. Again though, pain all the time for no reason isn’t actually normal until much later in life.

eestileib,

Vitamin D deficiency can cause all kinds of crazy ass symptoms too.

Catoblepas,

Is this really how people who aren’t disabled feel all the time?? I have had significant daily pain for close to 20 years at this point and I’m not 40 yet. 🥲

    Ledivin,

This may surprise you, but there are multiple things happening in this picture

    tdawg,

Anyone else find it hilarious that wiki uses the word “Belligerents” to label the list of warring nations?

    BirdyBoogleBop,

Is that not what “Belligerent” means?

    tdawg,

Calling someone belligerent is general done as an insult. So yes in typical Wiki fashion they are technically using the word correctly. But if read with connotation then it reads more like “here’s the list of assholes.”

    aBundleOfFerrets,

That is what the word is for. It is an insult because you are calling someone confrontational

    BirdyBoogleBop,

Okay I don’t agree because well. Beligerants basically means aggressive person/nation/etc. But if we don’t use beligerant what would you use instead?

    tdawg,

I think you misunderstand. I’m not saying the usage is wrong. I’m saying if you read the page in the same way people casually speak then it’s funny

    Muehe,

I think you misunderstand. The way Wikipedia uses the word is the original usage, so only funny if you don’t know about it. Applying it to bar fights and such is the tongue-in-cheek usage.

From Latin belligerans (“waging war”), present active participle of belligerō (“I wage war”), from belliger (“waging war, warlike”), from bellum (“war”) + -ger (from gerō (“I lead, wage, carry on”)).

    tdawg,

I’m not saying the usage is wrong.

But thank you for googling something I already looked up before posting my original comment. I genuinely don’t understand why people on this platform think they have authority on how language can be used and interpreted. It’s exhausting

    Muehe,

    Well sorry. No offence intended.

    CoggyMcFee,

Well I found your observation amusing

    Satelllliiiiiiiteeee,
    @Satelllliiiiiiiteeee@kbin.social avatar

Not every conflict is between nations and the infobox has to work across different conflicts. Belligerents is probably the best option to label the sides of a conflict

    RedditWanderer,

The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict[f] is an ethnic and territorial conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh, inhabited mostly by ethnic Armenians until 2023, and seven surrounding districts, inhabited mostly by Azerbaijanis until their expulsion during the 1990s. The Nagorno-Karabakh region has been entirely claimed by and partially controlled by the breakaway Republic of Artsakh, but is recognized internationally as part of Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan gradually re-established control over Nagorno-Karabakh region and the seven surrounding districts since 2020.

    kamenlady,
    @kamenlady@lemmy.world avatar

    2021–present

Twelve Azerbaijani civilians and two soldiers were killed in 2021, by landmine explosions. Seventeen Armenian and ten Azerbaijani soldiers were also killed in shoot-outs in the border area, while 38 Armenian soldiers were captured. Twenty-eight of the captured Armenian soldiers were subsequently released.

In 2022, three Armenian soldiers were killed and 14 wounded in an attack by Azerbaijani drones in Nagorno-Karabakh on 25 March.

The fatalities of the current war, is how i imagined wars when i was younger. Soldiers in combat with other soldiers. Civilian casualties “only” through landmines.

No raiding, raping, torturing & murdering of civilians as a sport of some sort
