The USSR and CCP were/are Marxist states. Saying they weren’t is just a cope from American socialists who feel the need to defend leftism anywhere, presumably because dumbasses think all socialists need to answer for every flaw while capitalism always has “context.”
Regardless, they, and various social democracies, did do something America refuses to, solve homelessness and hunger (after some… Initial difficulties).
I don’t particularly like the concept of the welfare state but it’s better than nothing and union busting.
I find that most people talking about the “extremes” tend to not be able to define what, exactly, they find so terrible about the idea that the workers should be the primary beneficiaries of their work.
Because that’s all left/right is. If you want to talk about the pitfalls of Marxist-themed authoritarianism I’m all ears but it isn’t “extreme socialism” anymore than fascism or an absolute monarchy is “extreme capitalism.”
And, just for the record, the wealth gap is growing faster in Scandinavia than America. The ruling classes might deign to take care of the most vulnerable but the model doesn’t actually solve the underlying problems, it just treats the most severe symptoms.
Which is better than nothing, I’ll take a ruling class that believes in noblesse oblige over one that does not, but the cancer remains. The system funnels wealth to the owner class, it can not do anything else without breaking.
Both communist and capitalistic systems have different expressions of socialist programs. It’s too bad that the transition from capitalist to communist economies stops at the authoritarian stage.
Socialism is the workers owning the means of production. It is not welfare programs. It is not a “socialist” program to give a starving person bread, it is a state run charity, and they make damn well sure it’s both hard to get and try to shame you for needing it.
When society was largely feudal, was it “socialism” when the king hosted a public feast to celebrate selling his daughter to a rival warlord? Or was it him giving some of the peasant’s taxes back to them and expecting gratitude?
I might still be watching invasion if it weren’t so damn dark, as in, I’m watching a black tv screen for 30% of each episode. Really enjoyed lasso, foundation, and currently watching for all mankind which is also quite good so far.
I bet you money I can make a joke that you will not enjoy/will upset you. Use your imagination. Your line for “too far” is not the universal standard, so don’t treat people like they’re wrong just because they don’t share your exact level of tolerance and exact same list of subjects available for humor.
"Attempt"? These are real world examples. If none of these could possibly be seen as offensive to you, if you truly can't understand why someone might be justifiably upset, then frankly you're just a sociopath.
I don’t post my dissent because I have no sense of humor or because I expect people to universally agree with my own sense of humor. I posted this because I hoped some people would think, “huh, maybe I shouldn’t post jokes that further propagate the harms caused by patriarchy when there are plenty of other jokes I can make or ways I can phrase the same joke that aren’t at the expense of those around me.”
Maybe I want to live in a world where women are treated with the same respect as men. Part of making that change is not continuing to use language that is harmful towards them and calling out others for it when I see it.
TLDR: Do better OP. The bar is on the floor and you and everyone upvoting you still somehow missed it.
Appreciate the kind words! I feel like it’s one of those things where people are so caught up in the politics they are not thinking about the nuts and bolts or using their imagination.
Should I make rape jokes around a survivor? Should I set off fireworks or pop balloons around a soldier with PTSD? How about make 9/11 jokes at a firefighter who lost friends that day and barely survived? Nobody would hesitate to tell me to stop and that it’s not funny. I t be socially tarred and feathered. But I guarantee you there people out there who think those things are hilarious! So who decides?
It boils down to mutual respect. Simple as that. If somebody asks you to stop, just stop. You are not entitled to an explanation and they do not have to convince you in order for you to show them that you respect them and their dignity as a person. That’s ridiculous.
I guess, but talking shit to your siblings is just kinda what happens. Siblings have less of a filter with each other than any two people on the planet. That doesn’t mean they wouldn’t die for each other if it came down to it though.
My older brother has me blocked, younger brother rarely texts me. It is like I am an only child. I am the only one who goes to my parents for holidays. I would never die for my brothers.
Yeah, I’ve seen it said that sibling is like a built-in best friend. And the very best friends will curse you to the depths of hell with a straight face and hear you do the same, and still remain your best friend
All of those can be watched in a month, though. It’s not enough to sustain an entire subscription. Also, foundation kind of sucked (nothing happened… maybe it will in the future, but also maybe it won’t)
Tales from the loop is actually on Amazon prime, lol.
Very meh. I first episodes that followed the books more closely were pretty good but later they just remove all the good bits and what’s left is just not that interesting.
Gifs are insanely inefficient, hosting them on volunteering instances would be pointless extra cost. Lemmy can already do both animated webp files and it even has an embedded player if you use a direct link to a video file.
