The core values of libertarianism: (god I wish I saved the original reddit comment, oh well I’ll paraphrase)

“Yes it’s fascist pseudoscience with no basis in reality, however it’s still a useful theory so I’m going to continue to believe it”

Tbh I was confused for a second and then thought. “Oh… Right-wing libertarianism!”

Where do you live that after reading “libertarianism” first thing you think about is left?

Narrrz,

it took me a long time to realise that just because it has the word liberty (almost) in it, doesn't mean it's a left-wing idea.

mindbleach, (edited )

In the US, that’s almost a red flag. (The other kind of red flag. I’m beginning to see the problem here.)

If you encounter primly-dressed members of some Family Liberty Choice For America Council, run screaming in the opposite direction.

meteorswarm,

Left libertarianism was first… But nowadays it only exists to “well actually” people with, at least in the US.

PolandIsAStateOfMind,
@PolandIsAStateOfMind@lemmy.ml avatar

Yeah. In Poland libertatrianism started around 1980 with a pretty fun episode when Janusz Korwin-Mikke went to the famous opening strike of solidarność in the Gdańsk Shipyard and preached to them the virtues of capitalism and free market. Shocked workers listened to the nonsense, concluded he has to be a militia provocateur (he really wasn’t) and locked him in the shed.

Currently, polish libertarians have such overlap with monarchists and neonazis they are even for years in a single political party - Konfederacja.

It’s like fat people telling you to eat healthy. Just because they don’t do it doesn’t mean it’s bad advice

Dkarma,

But it does mean they shouldn’t be taken seriously for any kind of health related advice in general.

Reminds me of the rabbi whose congregation complained about his many vices, saying that he’s supposed to be better, he’s supposed to show them the way. So he brought them to the edge of the town and showed them a direction sign.

“Does it show you the way? It does. And do you want it to go anywhere?”

Perfide, in Earth has a cold

Cold winter? We used to get blizzards in October here, now we barely get any snow at all throughout the entirety of winter, and it’s frequently warm enough to be comfortable outside in nothing but a shirt and shorts.

I swear every single year people forget how actually mild winter has become. It got down to -50F here once years ago thanks to the polar vortex and ever since most everyone starts on how “it’s gonna be a really cold winter this year” everytime it drops to the fucking 40-50F range. When you point out they said the same thing last year and it was even milder than when they said it 2 years ago, they often just double down being willfully ignorant and insist last winter was “soooo bad” despite it being warmer on average than Fall was 15 years ago.

m0darn, in It really makes me cringe every time they talk about logic...

A slightly different hot take:

Professing to be a mormon is a logical decision if your culture is mormon.

Disinterest in pursuing a more empirical world view is not illogical if one would have to damage their relationship with those closest to them in its pursuit.

(Sorry about the pretentiousness of that (and this) sentence, I can’t find a more vernacular way of expressing these ideas succinctly).

araozu,

What you said (and such defenses of religion) makes me think: If I see someone ready to jump off a bridge, and I can stop them against their will, should I? I mean, inside their brain they are ending their suffering. They don’t see value in life. But I do. Whose worldview is more important?

What if it was drugs, should I stop them? What if it was drinking every weekend? What if it was refusing to go outside without a mask in the middle of a pandemic?

What if it was following the cult of their parents, which encourages abuse & discrimination of women, opression of minorities, supression & regression of scientific advances and further indoctrination of future generations? If I have the power to get someone out of their cult against their will, should I?

Or what if it was continuing to feed a system that brainwashes people into thinking that monetary gain is what’s important in life, that the system is infallible, and no alternatives exist?

Should we act against what we perceive as wrong, even if it’s against the will of other persons? Where do we draw the line? Who decides what is right and what is wrong?

A bad standard adds to the pile.

A good standard crushes the pile.

Example: Git and Linux.

Proof: what are the other source management softwares? (Don’t mention Mercurial, that’s cheating).

Also for Linux, it’s down to the license and history. Linux isn’t a bad investment because all commits directly to the kernel are given freely to all. And it’s not Unix. It doesn’t have the stain of AT&T and their sue happy ways. Also Linux dominates all computer markets except for user desktops. Servers, phones, application specific utilities, etc.

Also, CVS, cvsup, both of which I’ve used in my early Linux years.

And fossil – which is the revision control system sqlite uses and I kind of like :)

AVincentInSpace, (edited )

It is also the version control system that uses sqlite which is pretty cool as far as disk space and resiliency are concerned esp. as compared to Git.

I don’t however like that it prides itself on not having any history rewriting features because I am kind of a fan of those. I like keeping embarrassing mistakes like a typo’d commit message or missing file out of my permanent commit history.

troyunrau,
@troyunrau@lemmy.ca avatar

I actually miss SVN. It had a lot of issues, yes, but the cognitive barrier was so much smaller. When I have a merge error in git, I basically just delete my repo and make a new one…
