I love that the calculators showing different answers are both from the same manufacturer XD

wischi, (edited )

In the blog post there are even more. Texas Instruments, HP and Canon also have calculators, and some of them show 9 and some 1.

i didn’t fully understand the article, but it was really interesting reading summaries & side discussions in the comments here!

i enjoy content like this that demonstrates how math is at its heart a useful tool for conceptualizing things vs some kind of immutable force.

I always hate any viral math post for the simple reason that it gives me PTSD flashbacks to my Real Analysis classes.

The blog post is fine, but could definitely be condensed quite a bit across the board and still effectively make the same points would be my only critique.

At it core Mathematics is the language and practices used in order to communicate numbers to one another and it’s always nice to have someone reasonably argue that any ambiguity of communication means that you’re not communicating effectively.

Cringe AF.

True story: some newspaper in Poland organize a competition for the weirdest name. The guy who won had last name of ‘Zyc or Cyc’ (in polish, of course). Basically when his grandfather was registering his name some guy couldn’t read it or something so he put ‘Zyc or Cyc’ and it stayed like this in the documents.

According to this guy when police would stop him and try to write a ticket they would get confused and ask him which one was it? He would say that maybe they shouldn’t write anything because their boss will they they’re stupid or something. They would usually let him go.

Kase,

It’s crazy how much names get garbled through immigration paperwork! My roommate moved from Africa (idk what country), and I’ve always known her as Ndeye (pronounced like “day” in English). Well apparently, that’s not her “real” name! She told me that where she’s from, “Ndeye” is a common title given as a prefix to a girl’s name, and it means something along the lines of “mother.” In her country, everyone called her by her first name. But when she moved here, on her new birth certificate they wrote Ndeye as her first name and her actual first name as her middle name. She told me she just decided to go with it. Ndeye is plenty unique here!

It’s unfathomable to me that they’re so careless with people’s names (like in your story), and that for my roommate, the paperwork meant for immigrants has such a rigid US-style structure. I’ve never met anyone who was especially upset about their name being changed like that, but it seems super messed up to me! 🤷

Course, I guess it’s a relatively smaller problem compared to the rest of the issues with the immigration process. Sorry for the rant lol.

Meanwhile programmers will be like, fools, clearly 2(n) is a function 😏

fallingcats,

I don’t know a single language that lets you use a name starting with a number for anything off the top of my head

deadbeef79000,

Probably Haskell.

Lilac,

Kinda. You can’t define a name, but you can get the compiler to interpret literals as a function. If you have a Num instance for (Integer -> Integer) where,

fromInteger i = x -> x * i

the compiler can interpret integer literals as functions like so

x = 2(5) :: Integer

senseamidmadness, in My cousin said the gas savings for a prius and a motorcycle were the same.

Depends on the motorcycle. Anything loosely above 500cc and the fuel efficiency gets worse than a Prius.

nilloc,

Especially if your having “fun” with it.

sexual_tomato,

I drive a 750cc bike and own a 2015 Prius. The bike gets better mileage.

senseamidmadness,

Must be something pretty modern with fuel injection!

I was very heavily generalizing; there are so many different kinds of motorcycles and they vary so widely in fuel efficiency that it’s really hard to average. Here in the US, the average new motorcycle sold is a 700-pound monster with an engine larger than 100 cubic inches of displacement. (Again, generalizing a bit, but Harley-Davidsons still make up over 4 out of every 10 new motorcycles sold here.) Harley-Davidson’s largest model, the Electra Glide Ultra Classic, gets less than 40 MPG and weighs well over 800 pounds.

beefcat,

it’s kind of shocking how bad motorcycles are at fuel efficiency given how much less mass they have to move

senseamidmadness,

My understanding is that the motorcycle/rider combination in most cases has a very poor coefficient of drag and that’s the largest issue at highway speeds.

Depends strongly on the motorcycle, however, as there are so many different kinds with varying amounts of bodywork. Some are absurdly efficient, like the Honda Grom, which routinely achieves over 100MPG.

Flumsy,

One full tank of gas on your motorcycle could be enough for a lifetime…

I don’t have much to say on this, other than that I appreciate how well-written this deep dive is and I appreciate you for writing it. People get so polarized with these viral math problems and it baffles me.
