Maybe it’s because nobody is interested in a platform that has a worse circlejerk than even Reddit of all sites?

I want Lemmy to succeed but we need to attract more normies and at the right time when Reddit does something stupid again.

Cranakis,

I dunno. I blame lack of engagement. We have to post content. Engage. I see tons of posts upvoted but a huge lack of OC. If we don’t use the platform, it dies.

interceder270,

Got some bad news for you, brother.

The normies you refer to are going to use reddit and twitter until they die.

bitsplease,

Yeah, remember the reaction when that one post got popular about lemmy being boring for anyone that wasn’t a SWE/Linux user?

People got so pissed off, one of the top posts on lemmy that day was something to the affect of “fuck you, we’re not obligated to post things you like”. Which, yeah, you’re not - but you also can’t blame people for losing interest in your platform when you only have active discussion on one or two relatively niche topics.

The fact is that Lemmy is garbage for discussing hobbys or interests outside of a few niche areas. On reddit my feed was filled with woodworking, 3d printing, Astronomy, and other topics that get very little traffic on lemmy.

My lemmy feed is mostly politics, then SWE stuff, then memes

TserriednichThe4th,

woodworking, 3d printing, Astronomy

I am surprised this isn’t more popular on Lemmy frankly.

fjordo, in Why? Are we not doing enough?

Happened with Mastodon too, but that’s thriving now. Users come in waves. Don’t focus on the numbers, focus on the content.

MargotRobbie, in F#€k $pez

Some of you who are complaining Lemmy are seeing though rose-tinted glasses about what reddit was like back in the day. The majority of the site was never good, and it had always had plenty of embarassing/messed up things on there that you had to sift through, but it’s a different, sterile kind of bad now.

Here are a couple of reminders of what reddit was actually like, in no particular order.

  • Ron Paul
  • Faces of Atheism, "Euphoric"
  • AdviceAnimals, Rage Comics
  • Spacedicks
  • r/jailbait
  • The entire Boston bomber saga

This is why I would never admit to using reddit in public, and until recent years, I would imagine most people won’t.

So if anyone complains about how the current content on Lemmy is driving people away, remember, Lemmy is positively TAME compared to this supposedly “Golden Era” of reddit.

Alexstarfire,

It sounds like you’re listing bad things about reddit but what’s wrong with advice animals and rage comics? I don’t really know any drama around Ron Paul or Faces of Atheism either. The latter certainly sounds like the name of a cult though.

drivepiler,

I miss the niche communities. So much knowledge about hobbies, crafts, cooking, anything. They will grow here though, with time.

bizzle,
@bizzle@lemmy.world avatar

Faces of Atheism was the single most cringe shit that I’ve ever seen, it was a bunch of fedora-wearing neckbearded atheists posting pictures of themselves overlaid with edgy and pseudo intellectual quotes by themselves. The euphoric one was the best lmfao I’m gonna copy/paste it here from the KYM page

“Just to be clear, I’m not a professional ‘quote maker’. I’m just an atheist teenager who greatly values his intelligence and scientific fact over any silly fiction book written 3,500 years ago. This being said, I am open to any and all criticism.

‘In this moment, I am euphoric. Not because of any phony god’s blessing. But because, I am enlightened by my intelligence.’”

Something funny I’ve seen is that in Norway it’s customary to distribute the income tax deduction over 11.5 months instead of 12, so that in November or December people only get deducted half the regular tax on their payslip. This is done to ensure that everyone has money for Christmas. It’s so dumb and beautiful that I can’t help but love the idea.

Imgonnatrythis,

Probably a decent economic stimulus, government probably does not end up taking much of a loss with this.

grue,

Government gets a gain from it – it gets its money sooner that way!

bardm,
@bardm@sh.itjust.works avatar

It’s actually only 10.5 months. There is no tax on your June payslip, that’s when most people get their vacation pay.

bstix,

Yes that’s also very common, but that’s a little more complicated. It’s only an option for people who have had the same job for more than a year and for those who agree on settling the entire holiday pay in June even if they don’t actually go on holiday then. It varies how people do it.

Unlike Norway, most EU countries tax the holiday on accrual so it’s always without a deduction when paid out regardless of when. Norway taxes it in the payment year though it is spread over the other months.

There are pros and cons to both ways. Personally I think that EU has the better one, not because of the taxation but because it’s not necessary to accrue holiday in advance.

If Linux was the world’s most popular operating system, it too would have tons of vulnerabilities.

There’s two sides to that statement; one being that increased attention leads to more findings. The second being that in order to become popular, it would need a large set of simplified convenience features aimed for mass consumers; and those are often what lead to vulnerabilities. (Same story pretty much happened with Android)

Google when people stop using chrome

Not so sure about that. I know more than enough persons who still like to use Edge (Internet Explorer).

Lmaydev,

I use Edge at work and it’s a really decent browser. It’s not Internet Explorer it’s basically Chrome with different tracking software lol

Obviously I use Firefox personally. But it’s actually decent.

Captain_Baka,

I also use it at work and it really sucks. I also have Chrome on my work computer, but for everything work-related I have to use Edge. Like E-Mails and Sharepoint-Stuff. Edge’s startup time is at least 4 times Chrome’s startup time. Sites load extremely slow directly compared to Chrome. No Adblockers. I really don’t like this.

AcornCarnage, (edited )
@AcornCarnage@lemmy.world avatar

You can install extensions right from the Chrome Web Store with Edge. I have uBlock Origin in Edge on my work PC.

Lmaydev,

Not for long 😞

ares35,
@ares35@kbin.social avatar

ublock origin is published to the addon 'store' for edge and opera, in addition to mozilla's (firefox and thunderbird) and chrome. links to all are on the repo's main page https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock

That's a decision your IT department made. I use Firefox with all of that at work.

LinkOpensChest_wav, (edited )

Can confirm. I also have to use Sharepoint with certain groups, and it works just fine. The web interface for Outlook works just fine as well.

I also have to use Google at work, and everything I’ve used works within Firefox.

I think it’s important to point this out because a lot of people seem to be laboring under the misconception that the sites they use will break in Firefox. The only sites I’ve found that don’t work are things like Bing AI, which work fine if you switch the user agent header.

Perfide,

Edge isn’t IE, it’s reskinned Chromium.

chris,
@chris@l.roofo.cc avatar

The problem isn’t Edge in itself. It is good if there are many browsers. But when Javascript became more than just a play thing, all of a sudden browser slowly moved to chromium as an engine. There used to be Opera, IE, Edge, Firefox, Safari and Chrome with each their own browser engine. Now there is only Chromium/Blink, Safari and Firefox left. Google is way too powerful with their marketshare. They constantly try to implement features that are bad for users.

Please use Firefox if you can!

Samsy,

New engines are in test stage, servo, ladybird etc.

ElPussyKangaroo,

Oh thank God. I was worried nobody will make new engines.

ElPussyKangaroo,

chris,
@chris@l.roofo.cc avatar

The problem is that it will take ages for them to get any adoption in a new browser. Firefox used to be a big player and then chrome came along. Now most of the people don’t even try Firefox anymore. I still hear a lot of “Firefox is slow” sentiment even though it isn’t.

Captain_Baka,

At least at home and on mobile I absolutely do o7

LinkOpensChest_wav,

I’ve started using Firefox at work, too. Unfortunately, I still have to use a lot of the Google sites at work, but they all work flawlessly within Firefox and uBO.

frezik, in Air cooling is just better

It’s a fun thing to do. I like my setup (O11 dynamic XL, two 360mm rads, dual pumps, both CPU and GPU blocks), but I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it to anyone. It’s a lot of effort and expense for a little gain. But it’s a hobby on top of a hobby, and that’s fine if you want to go for it.

Ovent,

Yeah, I’m CPU/GPU cooled for a good while now (4-5y). It’s a lot of efforts and make it harder to upgrade. You gain a bit of silence, but it’s really not worth for most people. Like you said, it’s more of a hobbit than anything.

RememberTheApollo_,

Yeah, upgrading is definitely a pain and more costly. Redoing the tubes if you went with hard tubing is part of it. If you didn’t go with some generic waterblocks you’re stuck with them fitted to the motherboard and good luck reassembling the fan cooler on the gpu if you kept the 50 small screws that held it all together.

That said, I personally won’t go back to air cooled. The low noise and steady temperature are worth it IMO.

Mylemmy, in POV: Your paper doesn't quite meet the page requirement.

lol maybe before chatgpt was a thing

papalonian,

Yup. Guilty as charged. If I need two pages and I’ve got like 1 3/4 of a page, I’ll copy/ paste my entire report into chatgpt and ask it to make it a little longer. Then go through the changes, modify the bits I like and cut out the parts I don’t.

Sue me.

rockerface,

tbh the page/word requirements are just as dumb as using chatgpt imo. as a general guideline for how much you need to go into details, sure, but literally counting pages and scoring based on that is not really the point of those assignments, I feel

papalonian,

Exactly. Last 2 years of highschool all of my major writing classes understood this and didn’t have minimums, just write as much as you think it’s necessary to cover your topic.

Most of my college courses have a minimum and maximum. Like they want to read exactly 2-3 pages per student. Annoying.

bleistift2,

One of my English teachers once said something like “The more you write the more I have to read. So keep it short.”

MeepMorp,

I had a professor who wanted at least five pages and wouldn’t read any more than eight. If you turn in more than eight, he reads the first eight and that’s it.

rockerface,

I can get behind the maximum requirement tbh, there is only so much one teacher can read through

TheSanSabaSongbird, (edited ) in I have never understood that.

There’s a lot of bullshit in this thread. People can wear shorts in cold weather either a) if it’s not that cold, or b) if it’s not for a long period of time. I’ve been in -50 and -60 degrees fahrenheit weather in Alaska and Montana and Wyoming and when it gets that cold any exposed skin is a huge liability and will become frostbitten and/or severely painful in a very short amount of time. Left untreated it will turn necrotic which is not good. You also, pretty much no matter what you’re wearing, can’t stop moving at those temps unless you are in some kind of shelter.

When I worked on The Slope in Alaska back in the 90s we used to do 20 minutes outside and then 20 minutes inside for full 16-hour shifts.

That said, it can be kind of invigorating and of course you do get used to it and learn to not let it bother you.

Edit: Also, if anyone cares, I’m not proud of having worked for Big Oil on The Slope back in the day. At the time I was young, it was a big adventure and it paid big money that allowed me to do a lot of other things that I otherwise would never have been able to do. Also, it was all union work through IUPAT DC5 which I am still an active member/activist of today.

Blackmist, in I have never understood that.

I feel seen.

Use your legs for a bit and they won’t get as cold.
