Drusas, (edited ) in I love concerts. I do not love standing room only.

I saw the Smashing Pumpkins a few years ago here in Seattle. The show was fantastic, but that's not the point.

There were a handful (a very small handful) of young guys who were in the audience, standing up the whole time despite being in the seated section, where there's really no benefit to standing up because you can't see any better.

They were the only ones standing. The people behind and around them would ask them to sit down, and they would act like everybody else was the problem. And then on Reddit, I saw people complaining as though the older fans were the problem for wanting to sit in the sitting section as opposed to the standing section, despite the fact that most of the attendees were in their '30s-40s or older.

No. In the '90s, maybe. But we're getting old now and you need to sit down. Those guys ruined the show for those people who had probably looked forward to seeing Smashing Pumpkins in concert for the last couple decades. Why ruin it for somebody else?

Now, if I went to some random punk show, I would expect to not be sitting. You have to consider where and when you are.

criticon,

You don’t go to a concert to sit down

I hate that the pit is usually super expensive (like 3x as much as decent seats)

I sit down during seats to rest but I definitely stand up during the concert and most people do

Drusas,

Everybody else there was sitting, so no, not most people do.

JackbyDev,

People go to a concert to listen to music. You can do that sitting or standing. Don’t shit in people’s preferences.

TheDarksteel94,

Concerts should be as inclusive as possible. If that means people can only go if there are seats, then it’s perfectly reasonable that there should be seats.

weariedfae,

Out of curiosity where did you see them? Was it at Climate Pledge Arena? We went to a concert there not too long ago and the new seats were just awful. They really jammed as many as possible in during the remodel.

Like, my friend who is the average size of a fit 35 yr old was pretty much squished and uncomfortable. I mean, I’m pretty sure I had bigger seats in elementary school and these weren’t the cheap seats either! Not the Cadillac premium seats, no, but not far off.

We were in the back row of the section (in front of the tables) so we ended up standing most of the time because the seats were too frickin small to be even remotely comfortable. The people behind us were cool with it.

It could explain why the dudes in your experience didn’t sit, but I agree it is rude to stand in front of someone sitting, ESPECIALLY if you’re at the front of a section.

Drusas,

That's where I saw them and I thought the seats seemed perfectly normal. Which is to say, not good but not unusually bad.

weariedfae,

Thanks for replying. I’ve heard that the seats seemed normal from others, and people who experienced what we did. I suspect the seat widths are variable in different sections and appreciate you adding data to the hypothesis. :)

Drusas,

I was there, too, and I saw those guys. They were like the only young people in the vicinity and were so rude too the people around them. I was very glad that they were over to the left of me and not in front of me. There was zero reason to be standing in that section.

I laughed way too hard at this. But seriously most antiquities need to be returned to their places of origin. It’s 2023 how is this still a conversation to be had?

Do you know why the pyramids are in Egypt? They were too big to put on the British ships

Do you know why the British were such good sailors? The taste of their food and the faces of their women

Do you know why we spell it color, honor, and such without the u? Cause fuck U that’s why

Bob_Robertson_IX,

The problem is that you have governments like the Taliban in Afghanistan, pre-9/11, destroying ancient statues, trying to erase the history they don’t agree with.

Instead of returning stolen antiquities, countries that are currently in possession of them should be required to send an equivalent value of their own country’s treasure to be displayed in the victim country’s museums.

Imagine having to go to Egypt to see the crown jewels of England.

flambonkscious, (edited )

Look here captain nuance, when we want your opinion, well give it to you!

jaybone,

I think the Roman’s tried that.

Yamainwitch,

I absolutely agree that there are some locations that are too volatile/corrupt to have items returned. I never would have thought to have equivalent items sent out of county for display, that would really drive the emotional point home.

gmtom,

Various reasons:

Some artifacts were acquired legitimately either as gifts or through purchase. So have no reason to be returned.

Some states are too unstable or corrupt to be able to return them, such as Syria or Egypt. And there was a case recently where France returned some artifical to an afircsn state just for the president (? King?) To keep them for himself.

Some artifacts don’t have an easy place to return them too. Like take the kohinoor diamond, do you give it back to the Indian government? The Pakistani government? The Afgan government? The decendents of of the Maharaja that signed over possession to the Queen, or the descendents of the people he stole it from? Or the people that person stole it from? And so on and so on. And at this point it’s more historically important to the UK than it is to any other country.

Which brings me to the next point, some artifacts are important because of their history after being taken. The Rosetta stone is a perfect example of this. When it was discovered by the French it was rubble being used to construct a crude wall. If the French didn’t recognise it might br important it would have been lost to history. And if it wasn’t translated by a French archaeologist after the British took it, then it would still be insignificant, as the are other identical stele in Egypt and its actual cobtents are pretty mundane and unimportant. Literally the only thing that makes the rosetta stone significant is its history AFTER it was taken from Egypt.

And finally some cases the artifacts are only their because that country got invaded. Like a lot of roman artifacts in the British museum were brought by invading Romans. I don’t think anyone sensible thinks they should be returned to Italy right?

Eq0,

Absolutely, and all the people that now have the artifacts benefit in keeping the status quo, so there is effectively little push to solve a very complex problem.

Yamainwitch,

You make a very well reasoned point, and I don’t disagree with you. I can see why museum curators won’t release antiquities because in your examples establishing provenance and actual logistics would be a nightmare. Not to mention the precedent of giving away some country’s items but not others. But, at this point in time it’s also a point of contention, rightfully so, that items obtained are still viewed as the property of the British museum in what amounts to a trophy case of imperialism. Ultimately we are in a period of growing pains as society and this is just another awkward period we have to get through to move forward.

Unaware7013, in I love concerts. I do not love standing room only.

Me, mid-thirties and still jumping in the pit during the headliner: what?

cryostars,

Yeah for higher energy bands especially, I just don’t get wanting to sit at shows. I’d rather just not go if I didn’t think I could stand/dance through a concert. I think it’s cool when venues have some designated seating for those who need it but it’s always kind of a bummer when I go and it’s mostly or only seated…kinda kills the energy

Unaware7013, (edited )

Yeah, I'd much rather be on gen-ad and standing than sitting up in the bleachers, but for some concerts it's like 4x more for gen-ad over seated sections. Sucks, but I'd rather see the band sitting than pay that ridiculous mark up for it.

PhreakyByNature,

Early 40s here and I stood last year for GnR and they’re always late. No regrets. Still go to metal and electronic music gigs / “raves”

I just saw them in Fort Wayne a couple weeks ago! Fantastic concert. Have fun and be safe

benwubbleyou,

Show was super good! Neck is sore though lol.

Classy,

Once I grew my hair out I couldn’t resist the urge to headbang like a maniac at metal shows. Can’t beat seeing Cannibal Corpse and Mayhem a couple months back… That was insane. Moshing and banging, probably the best concert I’ve ever seen

Critics assert that funding the mujahideen played a role in causing the September 11 attacks.

redcalcium,

What’s with the US funding resistance groups only to have those groups turn their back on US when they finally got in power?

It’s cause they always fund far right groups to squash the leftists.

en.prolewiki.org/…/Central_Intelligence_Agency#Bl…

“Blowback” is a CIA term first used in March 1954 in a now declassified report on the 1953 operation to overthrow the government of Mohammed Mossadegh in Iran. It is a metaphor for the unintended consequences of the US government’s international activities that have been kept secret from the U.S. public.[30]

One example of blowback is the CIA’s financing and support for the Mujahideen to fight an anti-Communist proxy guerrilla war against the USSR in Afghanistan. The Mujahideen would later become Al Qaeda which would commit the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Due to the CIA’s function as an anti-communist organization, it typically relies on right-wing groups to achieve its policy goals, either by latching on to and supporting pre-existing anti-communist groups and leaders or helping to create them. This leads to the spread of fascism, terrorism, and increased instability in regions where the CIA has used their influence, even after the CIA has ceased actively using them to achieve specific goals.

I don’t know what in the hell I did, I have one of the solid circular round ones with a small hole in the back for the keychain. It’s been on my keys for ages. One morning I went to put my seat belt on and got a sharp stab. I pulled my keys out and it was bent 90° and I just the tiniest little bit of blood on it.
