The Streaming Service Formely Known As Max

GlitterInfection,

I just canceled their service today.

Removing 4k streaming from my subscription is the last straw for me. Fuck you, Max, for fucking over tons of content creators before this. Fuck discovery and fuck your garbage reality TV content trash. Fuck your terrible new app layout. Just generally fuck this era of streaming services.

I’m so pissed because HBO Max was a pretty great service for a time.

You finally have a chance to see the light, pay 5$/month for mullvad VPN and download all the shows you want from the seven seas.

Stephen304,

HBO Max was the last service I still had before I fully committed to the high seas, for similar reasons. Removing Westworld before many people were even finished with the newest season was the final straw. There’s nothing on any streaming service that I haven’t been able to get in the same quality through *arr apps onto my Plex, including usually HDR and 5.1 now that I have rules set up to upgrade to those when available.

peopleproblems,

me too, that’s incredible. I haven’t set up a plex yet I have to remember to do that

superduperenigma,

Just generally fuck this era of streaming services.

The high seas, on the other hand, are pretty fantastic these days.

iforgotmyinstance,

I receive their service for free but the email notifying me it would be dropped from 4k to 1080p was ridiculous.

partial_accumen,

I like the joke, but HBO Go doesn’t belong with those other 3. HBO Go was an included streaming companion to a cable subscription. There was no way to get HBO Go without also subscribing to cable. HBO NOW was the first standalone streaming service, then renamed to HBO MAX, then renamed to Max.

If you need something legit to replace HBO go for the joke you could use HBO Nordic, which WAS a standalone streaming service with the HBO content that predates HBO Now. Technically HBO Nordic was only available as a European product, but it was accessible in the USA via VPN.

TIHI. All the name successors are already in place.

DavidGarcia,

who is Max and why should he go now? Perhaps some coworker they hate?

4am,

Max has never been HBO’s platform.

I can’t wait for Peacock to copycat.

Next will be just “M” to follow Twitter.

They’re pulling a Coke and they’re going to rebrand as HBO next year and everyone will cheer the brilliant move.

AceFuzzLord,

I’m betting they’re either gonna go with M or A, following twatter. Either way, we’ll have another service to mock for having an atrociously bad name.

Y tho? The first rule of brand recognition is ya don’t fuck with the brand name!

Mereo,

For the life of me, I don’t understand why they rebranded themselves. HBO is such a recognized brand. I was confused at first about what Max was.

bitsplease,

Based on my experience working with PR teams and executives - you probably had a bored PR team that wanted to do something that feels important or relavent, and they pitched it to the exec team in a way that made them feel all important and excited (they probably threw in the phrase “lifestyle brand” a few times), so they went with it against all reason

HurlingDurling,

Because they have begun fucking over their customers and don’t want to associate HBO with that

Guajojo,

Ding ding ding, we have a winner

phoneymouse,

Agree. HBO is some high class, quality shit. Max is meaningless. I guess it corresponds with the CEO of Discovery channel coming in to wreck HBO in the same way he did Discovery.

Especially when one of their main competitors was called CineMAX

stevehobbes,

Cinemax has always been owned by HBO. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinemax

4am,

Isn’t Max literally Cinemax’s streaming service, that merged with HBO Now to form HBO Max, and is now back to being just Max?

This is the part that was, for some reason, never communicated to anyone. HBO streaming didn’t rebrand, they were absorbed into Cinemax.

jaybone, (edited )

Didn’t Cinemax originally run a bunch of porn?

Next iteration should be CliMax.

EDIT I think back in the day it was jokingly called skinamax for that reason.

someguy3,

One business analyst figures it’s a new guy trying to establish his mark and/or his midlife crisis.

TropicalDingdong,

MBAs have to justify there existence some how

It’s like Twitter rebranding to X. It’s extremely detrimental to the brand, but it makes some executive feel really good about themselves and that’s all that really matters apparently.

The only X I’ll ever recognise is my man X to the Z, Xzibit.

I just call the dead blue bird a Twatter now.
