The movies don't all have to be connected by a single overreaching narrative, give us some standalones. Give us a feel good Justice Society movie and a utopian sci-fi Legion of Superheroes. It would also be nice to move away from the core Justice League team and world or universe level threats. Let Nightwing stop the Zodiac Master's plan to rob a series of banks.
I never understand this shit. Like even if you have absolutely no morals, you’re Vin Diesel. You can pretty much have consensual sex whenever you want to. Why do you have to resort to assaulting people?
This right here. Rape is not about arousal, it’s about power. I highly recommend Roy Hazelwood’s books on the matter if anyone, like me, has a morbid curiosity about why people commit certain violent crimes.
My uneducated guess would be that if you can have “normal” women at any time you want; or more generally have any needs met at any time because you are rich and famous, the things you cant have are much more appealing. A “no” or “not for sale” becomes “you don’t offer enough yet”.
Hopes? None. Warner Bros. has no fucking clue how to use DC characters and ideas in theaters. They may get lucky with specific movies being decent, but the best movies are not even as good as the worst of the animated movies and series. They keep throwing money and names at live action, instead of focusing on telling good stories that stay true to the essence of the characters.
I don’t see Gunn doing any better tbh. For one, he’s going to be hamstrung by whatever Warner decides is the goal. For another, he’s going to end up limited by whatever flawed view executives have of the servers characters. And then he still may not have a grasp of what either comics fans or non comic fans need from a movie featuring DC characters.
I think that another risk you run by putting Gunn in this role after he found the only success in modern DC movies and series is pressure to become too Gunn-y. The same way that Marvel was so taken with Taika Waititi’s Ragnarok that they had him go even more Waititi on Love and Thunder, which clearly made it worse, and then tried to incorporate similar humor in other projects that fell flat. Sometimes playing to hard into a unique success just proves that it was either largely novelty-driven or that you just can’t recapture it.
Amen. Though, tbh, I did shed a few tears during love and thunder, so it wasn’t a total failboat.
I like Gunn’s style, but any time you just hand the reins to a single director, the risk of them cackling like a mad scientist and creating an abomination is high.
Love and thunder is, in part, a story of the pain, loss, and grief of watching a cherished loved one wither away with cancer before they or you are ready. It was always going to pull tears no matter what else happened in the movie
I kinda stopped liking him when the whole beef with the Rock happened because boy did that make him look like an arrogant bitch
That’s also when I learned he made directors shoot scenes with them together in such a way that made them look the same height which is just…how self conscious can you be? You’re Vin Diesel. Nobody gives a shit that you’re “only” 5’11"
He also has a contract term limiting how badly fights can go for him. But apparently that’s common for action stars, so whatever.
I did find it amusing that during his feud with the Rock, they had to count the exact numbers of hits each took while fighting each other on screen so neither would look bad. It’s like, Vin is a D&D nerd who turned his horror franchise into a science fantasy opera and started his own video game company because he was frustrated at bad movie tie-ins (side note: Escape From Butcher Bay is one of, if not the, best prison games ever made). Embrace nerdity, reject this toxic masculinity crap. There’s a massive audience for that thing now - just look at Ryan Reynolds, nobody talks shit about him being a massive nerd.
Though this lawsuit is about events from thirteen years ago, so he was already too far gone early in his career. If it’s true, fuck him. Rapists and sexual assaulters get no sympathy.
Just cause you make a movie about women doesn’t mean you should get an Oscar. There were better directors and acted movies out there (in the opinion of the voters). That’s why it didn’t make the cut.
I personally didn’t even like the movie and definitely don’t think it deserves an award for best directing or acting.
Not surprised Robbie didn’t get a Best Actress nomination, but I really felt Gerwig was a shoo-in for Best Director. Gerwig can still walk away with Best Picture and/or Best Adapted Screenplay though, so it doesn’t feel like a total snub.
Honestly Barbie just wasn’t a good movie and it really shouldn’t have gotten any nominations
It was over hyped and it was trash marketing for Matel.
And if you guys watched the movie it literally ended with Ryan gosling learning absolutely no lessons and just being like oh ok I can act like a dick and I’ll still get what I want?
Killers of the flower moon was far far better than both Oppenheimer and Barbie. Honestly don’t think Oppenheimer should have received so many nominations either.
A woman goes out to discover herself and the world, in a movie so colorful, I constantly smiled in my seat. A man on her side that struggles with his masculinity. A parental figure that is only there for the lead to discover how far she came. A family to be part of in the end.
Poor things makes Barbies pink pale. In every aspect. Emma Stone stands without competition this year.
Honestly, it doesn’t make sense for any of them to get a nom. The film was good, it was enjoyable, but it wasn’t an Oscar film. It wasn’t Gerwig’s best work and it wasn’t Robbie’s best performance. Despite Gosling being one of the best parts of the movie, the pickings for best supporting must have been slim for that to get him a nom for that role.
