tkk13909, (edited ) in Scam Numbers - Reddit's (and possibly the internet's) largest scam number depository, now on Lemmy!

But why is it hosted on a .zip domain? Edit: for clarification, I don’t have anything against having different instances. I’m just wary of anything using the .zip tld.

DripGeronimo,

I’ve switched instances from lemmy.world to lemmy.zip as .world was very slow with updating their server

ZeroCool, (edited )

It’s for the best anyway. It’s better for the health of the fediverse when communities are spread out across a wide array of instances. The consolidation of communities on lemmy.world is not ideal. Good luck with the community!

Great writeup and easy to understand. What would be a solution to this problem?

418teapot, (edited )

I hate that Google is exerting even more control on the internet with their TLD, but I don’t really think this attack is made all that much worse with .zip TLD. I can already bury a .com in a long URL and end it in .zip just fine like so:

github.com∕foo∕bar∕baz@example.com/foo/…/baz.zip

Or even use a subdomain to remove the @:

github.com∕foo∕bar∕baz.example.com/foo/…/baz.zip

The truth is most people don’t look much at URLs outside of a domain to verify its authenticity, at which point the .zip TLD does not do much more harm than existing domains do.

For mitigation, Firefox already doesn’t display the username portion of the URL on hover of a link and URL-encodes it if copy-pasted into the url bar. It also displays the punycode representation when hovering or navigating to the second example.

Except that it is clearly satire - it's poking fun at the idea of anti-intellectualism.

Having said that, one could argue Poe's law - it can be hard to tell these days what's satire and what's not, and not everybody is laughing at anti-intellectualism

You may be misinterpreting the meme - it's meant to be intentionally silly, anti-anti-intellectual if anything. "YEARS yet no REAL WORLD USE found for counting any higher than your FINGERS" is definitely poking fun at people who think that higher academic notions are useless.

Replace “Lemmyverse” with “the American left” and you’re closer to the truth.

    • The American left is against racism … yet harbours an alarming amount of antisemitism and an increasing amount of sinophobia.
    • The American left is against ageism … directed at young people. Old people are open season.
    • The American left is against religious bigotry … except Christians. . . .

It’s just tribalism cosplaying as idealism. (And it’s why, for example, Chinese LGBT groups have been quietly removing themselves from interaction with American LGBTQA+ groups over the past few years.)

Is the corporate astro turfer with us in the room right now, demesisx?

There’s a snowball’s chance in hell that corporations are spending their time and money trying to convince the few dozen active posters and few thousand commenters of anything. Most corporations with a PR department probably don’t even know Lemmy exists let alone has a significant enough number of users to matter to their interests.

Even if all of that weren’t true, you’ve still done nothing but created a community which I’m sure takes all of the time that setting up a new voice channel on discord does. Congratulations, you’ve created a place where random people who don’t agree with you will be framed as corporate imps for having an independent thought or knowledge of how the world works that you just can’t wrap your head around.

“Impossible for you to do anything about”

Lol it’s like watching Jerry from R&M leaving the day care and being told that he was always allowed, we really couldn’t care less but you’ll take this criticism as “those darn corpos trying to ruin Lemmy!” Instead of people calling you out for providing nothing and then pretending you are some activist striking out against the man.

    Isn’t it heavily downvoted?

Nope. The anti-reddit stuff was downvoted and pro-reddit stuff upvoted. I dug back into my profile to find the most recent time it happened to me sh.itjust.works/comment/7640949.

Overall I don’t find lemmy very anti-reddit at all. There were a bunch of anti-reddit subreddits of pretty large size that reddit basically shut down. All of them were way more anti-reddit than lemmy is. /r/watchredditdie and /r/declineintocensorship for example. I’m hoping to pull some of those people to lemmy by giving them a new home.

    Blaze,

I dug back into my profile to find the most recent time it happened to me sh.itjust.works/comment/7640949.

I had a look and those links point to a thread in !asklemmy, which is not !reddit nor !reddit!reddit. Both those communities are pretty much anti-Reddit.

Anyway, feel free to create another one, but be prepared for most of the people to just stick to those two, as they are well established and have large userbases

    Anon518,

Yeah I didn’t want to go digging that far back. I wouldn’t say they’re large. They have a few hundred subscribers while the /r/watchredditdie, etc. subs had more than a hundred thousand and were larger alone than the whole of lemmy.

    ImplyingImplications,

They received money from the Gates Foundation so now right wing nut jobs believe all their videos are mind control propaganda.

    ChaoticNeutralCzech, (edited )

    The video in question

    • was on climate change optimism
    • primarily suggested experimental carbon capture system that Bill Gates had invested in as potential solutions
    • only mentioned the sponsor in the end screen so most people did not notice

Supposedly, several other videos were sponsored by foundations and exhibit similarly subtle biases.

Also, lots of their research comes from their partnered publication, Our World in Data, which was sponsored by philantropists and found to be biased and unreliable on many accounts.

Does it mean they are as crazy and oblivious to science as PragerU? Not even close. However, their claims and presentation should be treated with a pinch of salt even if they provide footnotes. Personally, I find the biases too slight to matter – I would not really watch their videos anyway (I don’t like the pacing, language, obsession with cleanliness and animation style).

    projectd,

Could you reference some of these claims that our world in data was found to be biased? Sounds like a pretty solid judgement was made, but a cursory search didn’t yield anything untoward. Maybe if it’s definite, you could update the Wikipedia entry to reference the controversy, as that’s always a good place to signpost that kind of thing.

    ChaoticNeutralCzech, (edited )

Not now, I don’t really have time for that. I suggest you look at this Medium article / opinion piece (?). Sorry that I cannot go deeper into this rabbit hole with you but I need to sleep before a busy week. I am pretty sure it is not as deep and twisted as some think it is.

    projectd,

Thanks, that’s a really interesting piece. I don’t interpret that it’s really about bias though, he’s gone through to offer to some more ideas for context. The takeaway seems to be that while the OWID stats are accurate, historical context changes that changes the way people lived and would be good to add - it’s really clever, but I don’t think there’s much to suggest there’s anything nefarious. In times where we are presented with outright lies, it still seems to me to be a source which shines light
