Regardless what side of the border they started on, very few of these people want their lives ruined.

bartolomeo, in Many hostages released by Hamas still being treated for trauma
@bartolomeo@suppo.fi avatar

It’s great that these people are receiving treatment, not only because it’s the right thing to do but also so that the world gets an accurate idea of how much damage is actually being done and what kind of resources will be needed to heal from this war and occupation.

The trauma experienced by hundreds of thousands of children and their parents in Gaza will also have long-term debilitating effects, psychiatrists and psychologists have warned, particularly as there are no therapeutic facilities left. Few of Gaza’s hospitals are functioning any more, even for operating on the severely injured.

There are also thousands of examples in the West Bank, especially with warrantless entries to Palestinian homes (most often done at night to instill more fear and suffering from sleep deprivation onto the Palestinians) and indefinite incarceration without charge, sometimes subject to torture.

Yes, “impending” kind of implies it hasn’t been happening for the past 40 years.

Yikes. It started out as expats in Japan and took a left turn to concentration camp real fast.

    zzzzz,

I never knew about this. It seems strange to me that they’d give work permits to others but not their culturally, ethnically similar neighbors. I wonder why they’d prefer to give permits to others?

    bamboo,

In the immediate aftermath of the Nakba, they didn’t want to make the refugees status permanent because they expected the refugees to someday be able to return to their land. In more modern times, Lebanon has a (largely unsuccessful) balance of power between the Christians, Sunnis, and Shias. Making the refugees position permanent would significantly upset that balance by shifting the population in favor of the Sunnis.

    zzzzz,

Got it. Thank you for the explanation.

Powderhorn, in Polish government puts public media into liquidation amid dispute with president
    @Powderhorn@beehaw.org avatar

I’m not an expert in Polish politics, but Tusk is the sort of PM where, yeah. Anything left over from the old regime where there’s still some power left is going to lead directly here.

There’s a lot that needs sorted, and Duda is going to try to fuck things up as much as possible.

And if they weren’t, Hamas was using them as human shields. If they weren’t, then they should have obeyed Israel’s directives to evacuate. If they did, then they shouldn’t have voted for Hamas. If they didn’t, then they shouldn’t have been born on land Israel wants.

BubsyFanboy, in Polish government puts public media into liquidation amid dispute with president
    @BubsyFanboy@szmer.info avatar

Before you comment, this is the full announcement:

Announcement of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage

Due to the decision of the President of the Republic of Poland to suspend financing of public media, I decided to put into liquidation the companies Telewizja Polska S.A. and Polskie Radio S.A. and Polish Press Agency S.A.

In the current situation, such action will ensure the continued operation of these companies, carry out the necessary restructuring and prevent layoffs of employees in the above-mentioned companies. companies employees due to lack of financing.

The state of liquidation may be withdrawn at any time by the owner.

Bartłomiej Sienkiewicz Minister of Culture and National Heritage

And now some context from the article:

Today, Duda proposed his own alternative bill that would have maintained other government spending in the budget – such as the public sector pay rises – but did not include the funds for public media.

However, this morning, the speaker of parliament, Szymon Hołownia, who is one of the leaders of the new ruling coalition, said that he would not convene an early sitting of the house to discuss the president’s proposal, as Duda had requested.

This afternoon, before Sienkiewicz’s decision was published, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that the cabinet had decided that the 3 billion zloty previously earmarked for public media would instead be spent on cancer treatment and mental healthcare for children.

Tusk added that Duda’s veto had forced the culture minister to make certain decisions, which would be done “calmly and rationally”.

However, Sienkiewicz’s decision was condemned by figures linked to PiS and to the former management of public media. Samuel Pereira, a senior editor at TVP under PiS, said that the “usurpers are trying to bypass the National Court Register” – the body responsible for validating Sinkiewicz’s previous decision.

Shortly afterwards, President Duda’s chief of staff, Marcin Mastalerek, published a statement declaring the decision to put public media into liquidation as “an admission of defeat by the government”.

Kidplayer_666, in Danish MPs vote to ban desecration of religious texts after Qur’an burnings

The problem is, as usual, Flying Spaghetti Monster showing that it’s hard to define what is a religion, therefore abuse

    otter, (edited )

I think intent plays a role here. If the goal is to incite a reaction or to hurt a population by publicly burning something that they care about, it’s probably not a great to do

One of those things where you know when you see it, but it’s hard to define explicitly.

If anything, it might help as a temporary measure to reduce tensions and inflammatory incidents

    Hirom,

The bill has since been reworked to specify that it only applies to holy books from religions recognised in Denmark.

I guess it’s now more clearly defined to reference to religion recognized by Danish administrations.

    Kidplayer_666,

Didn’t they get legal recognition in like Germany or something? Maybe Denmark is next

Hard to say. I doubt it though.

As insincere/foolish as our politicians can be, they do seem to take that part somewhat serious.

Like, Scientology isn’t recognized as a religion and such. The list of religions outside of the abrahamic ones is surprisingly short.

VivaLaSully, in The “Hunt for Hamas” Narrative Is Obscuring Israel’s Real Plans for Gaza

I feel like it is understood through that lens by the people that care to read up and be informed about the world. I just don’t know what can be done, usa will never drop support for Isreal. Plain and simple.

Excluding dumbasses that try to justify zionist Isreal in their genocide of women and children, and vice versa for hamas supporters and praising the october massacre. I feel like the rest of us hate it but it really feels like a catch 22 situation where there will be no good outcome.

Just like American politics, I look at the situation and I see no “side” to objectively be on. And just like our current system, it appears it’s going to get a whole lot worse before it gets any better.

That scrap of land has not seen peace since the paleolithic, it’s through where most of the first Homo apes came from Africa and spread over the world, and everyone writing down their particular beliefs about whose land it is for future generations to read, has pretty much cemented it as a cursed land for as long as there are people left on the planet.

What “could” be done, would be to evacuate everyone, then nuke the whole area and make it unlivable for a while… maybe re-nuke it every 10 years for good measure, turn it into something like the Olympics, only for all countries in the world to show off their WMDs… but I still wouldn’t be surprised to see the same factions in hazmat suits getting back to killing each other in the interim.

PS: maybe call it “The Armageddon Games”, that could gain some support 😒

S_204, in Sold to Salafism: The millions for which Golf-pro Jon Rahm sold himself to Saudi Arabia hide tortured citizens, executed minors, women sentenced to perpetual confinement, and enslaved foreign workers

Interesting how the Saudi export of their religion is a problem but you’ve got people in the streets cheering for Hamas who is just as brutal if not worse in their upholding of their interpretation of Islamic laws. One’s certainly more subtle than attacking and killing a bunch of civilians but both are troublesome for Western democractic ideals.

Iran and Qatari investments are paying off . Better than the investment in a golf league… y’know, if you don’t value human life that is.

S_204, in ‘Why are they forgetting about us?’: Sudan watches allies turn from war to aid Ukraine and Gaza

Qatari money isn’t being used to prop up a terrorist organization in Sudan, obviously they’re not going to get the same support the general populations attention has been pushed away from Sudan in favor of Chinese psyop apps and Qatari state media.

American politicians aren’t any different than the general public. They go where they’re led. If they don’t they quite often get run out of office.

S_204, in Iran, child bride and year-long victim of domestic violence Samira Sabzian who killed her 'husband' has been been executed in Ghezelhesar Prison

Islamic jihadism is a problem that the world needs to get in front of.

The problem is, there’s a lot of wealth in the places that are true believers in Islamic jihadism and that wealth is being used nefariously to undermine liberal western democratic ideals. Watching people cheer for Osama bin Laden should be a real eye opener for the west but it might already be too late.
