Pyr_Pressure, in U.N. votes to end US embargo on Cuba; US and Israel oppose

What is the reason for the US still doing an embargo? Hasn’t it been like 60 years or whatever?

This seems like such a no brainier but the US always says no.

Yeah, this barely even qualifies as news since they've been doing it for 60 years.

Faced with this dilemma, it’s quite possible the automakers will respond by simply disabling telematics and connected services for customers in the state.

So the automakers may disable a feature I neither need nor want.

Oh no! Anyway…

If he pulls out some old testament shit he’s good to go. The Israelites were told to destroy Jericho completely in the story I remember. Just change the name to Gaza and it works out great for him.

JakeBacon,

Funnily enough (not funny actually, considering the war crimes and all), the Old Testament says that the Jews/Isrealites will never get rid of other people living in the area due to not driving them out in their original conquest.

Pat_Riot,

I do love a good irony. Only atheists actually read religious texts though.

solanaceous,

I was having a weird one today so I read through the book of Amos. It’s shockingly similar to the current situation.

Amos prophesied that Gaza would be destroyed, even genocided, as a reaction to crimes that included kidnapping entire communities. But that’s just an intro to a prophecy that Israel would be violently and mercilessly destroyed in response to a long list of their own crimes.

I’m not saying that Amos predicted the current situation, just that it’s sad how little we’ve improved in 2500 years.

MaxHardwood,

Prophecies require explicit parameters. Anything else is ad-hoc and you can fit nearly anything to be a prophecy after the fact.

sqgl, in Dozens of cancer patients could die as Gaza’s main cancer treatment hospital forced to stop most activities over fuel shortage, UN says

Hamas is maintaining a stockpile of more than 200,000 gallons of fuel for the rockets it fires into Israel and the generators that provide clean air and electricity to its network of underground tunnels, according to U.S. officials, current and former Israeli officials and academics.

nbcnews.com/…/hamas-hoarding-vast-amounts-fuel-ga…

Israel released photos of Hamas fuel stores however I don’t understand how they can know if there is anything in them.

Maybe night time infrared imagery indicates that full ones retain heat? (And maybe water would retain it differently?). But even if we presume that is possible, why don’t IDF just bomb them if they are so sure it is Hamas fuel?

Abrahamic religions always lead to genocide. It’s built into the very fabric of the religious traditions, the entire reason they existed to begin with was to justify the genocide of other tribes.

For those curious, it’s a meme-formatted exposition by Mash’s Hawkeye on why the saying ‘war is hell’ is wrong, it actually being worse then hell.

EthicalAI,

War is usually a war between STATES that has very little to do with its people. People are just the cannon fodder of the state interest.

In cases like Gaza one side actually does have PEOPLE involved, Gazans, vs a STATE. It makes it much more clear who is in the wrong.

ErinCrush, in Don’t fall into the trap of ‘picking sides’ over Gaza: Hamas’s attacks were unconscionable, razing Gaza to the ground would be abhorrent. In both cases, basic humanity is at stake --- [Opinion]

They just bombed another refugee camp and a couple of UN schools today, killing and wounding hundreds, but don’t worry everyone; there was one bad guy in there too!

Not a fan of the framing here, ‘were’ vs ‘would be’ as if the later is just a hypothetical rather than the reality of civilians in Gaza.

Treczoks, in Don’t fall into the trap of ‘picking sides’ over Gaza: Hamas’s attacks were unconscionable, razing Gaza to the ground would be abhorrent. In both cases, basic humanity is at stake --- [Opinion]

I actually never picked sides in that conflict. Both sides are nuts, the Hamas are terrorists, the IDF commits war crimes, they are both evil.

I propose putting a wall around the whole area and wait for the noise to stop, either by them getting their acts together, or by having killed each other.

Asafum,

No one ever wants to try it, but I say instead of the US giving Israel money for military aid we instead give Jordan money to host the world’s largest fried chicken festival, everyone loves fried chicken. We get Israel and Palestine empty and we give them all “I ❤️ NY” shirts so no one knows where anyone else is from. While they’re all gone we completely fucking glass the “holy land.” Nuke it all so no one can live there for 200+ years.

Maybe by then the people that exist as Israeli and Palestinians can stop with their religious war bullshit over a plot of land and maybe just get on with living a “good” life.

jarfil,

glass the “holy land.” Nuke it all so no one can live there for 200+ years.

Maybe by then […]

Not long enough.

Conflict in the area has been going on for anywhere between 4000 and 200,000 years (lower paleolithic). Since the invention of writing, people of different origins have been able to transmit their religious claims to the region for thousands of years.

200 years would barely put a dent on it.
