CJOtheReal, in EU fingerprint checks for British travellers to start in 2024

Good. Fingerprints are in the passport so checking them isn’t a problem. Outside EU means Outside EU.

There is P-SMS which is a fork of QKSMS, that is what I use

The simplemobiletools apps are being forked by one of their bigger co-developers, so I’ll just use that as soon as it’s available.

Until then, as long as you got the build from F-Droid, there shouldn’t be anything to worry about.

I’d love to know as well.

Been using it for a while as the 2FA app used and recommended by Leo Laporte. I’ve had a good experience with it, but if it has any issues, I would love to know.

Edit: A while being a year or two.

This is becoming a trend and I really don’t like it.

    Y2K38,

    What exactly?

    BolexForSoup, (edited )
    @BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

Setting restrictions on what 2FA/authenticators we can use. I imagine it’s only a matter of time before Google functionally makes it so you can only use theirs when using their services.

Edit: I assumed it was some of the messages I’ve seen elsewhere, my mistake. I don’t need everybody repeating the same comment. Please read the responses before telling me the exact same thing over and over again guys lol

    ErKaf,

They recommend these two. Under the recommendations it even says you can also use different apps…

    Y2K38,

At least for what I just posted this isn’t a restriction. Its a recommendation. You can still use any other app. I thought its nice that they recommend the privacy friendly ones.

    starlord,

I’ve gone tons of places that say use Google Authenticator (only) and I just summon the QR code and scan with Aegis anyway and it always works fine. I’ve never seen a place that required a certain one.

    skarn,

It literally says “Other authenticator apps that support OTP […] can also be used”.

gadgetzombie, in Anytype as an alternative to Notion or Obsidian

I tried a bunch of these note taking apps and didn’t really get on with any of them. I now use the Vscode/Vscodium extension Foam which essentially gives all the note taking features and graph view in what is already a good text editor.

So long as you are mainly writing notes and don’t need the database features that AnyType has or the DataView plug in Obsidian has (though there might be another vscode extension for this - I’ve never looked), then you’d be fine.

governorkeagan, in Anytype as an alternative to Notion or Obsidian

I came across it a little while back (after watching a Linux Experiment video) but haven’t gotten into it yet.

Kekin, in Is Proton Unlimited Worth renewing?
    @Kekin@lemmy.world avatar

I had the unlimited plan for a few months but downgraded only to the mail plan, that way I can try different providers for VPN, Drive, and password manager.

For password manager I’ve had Bitwarden for years now and it works great for me. VPN currently with AirVPN because of easy port forwarding, and drive with Nextcloud self hosted because I can, and also works fine for me.

leo85811nardo, (edited ) in Is Proton Unlimited Worth renewing?

I used Proton Mail since college student, it was great and upgraded to Unlimited tier after getting a job. Thier VPN was okay for occasional usage. However, coming from a personal perspective, over the time I became not a fan of them branching out to other services such as Proton Pass, when they still have work to do for their existing ones (eg. split tunneling on Linux VPN client, calendar sync on Bridge, to name a few), so I downgraded to only Mail Plus. I also switched to Mullvad VPN and I like the experience better than Proton VPN. As of now, I think Proton is still a great service for email and calendar, but I’m not sure about other ones

GenderNeutralBro, in Is Proton Unlimited Worth renewing?

I’m also interested in hearing Proton users’ experience. On paper it looks like an okay deal, but you could get a similar suite of services from Posteo + iDrive + Mullvad + BitWarden for cheaper and not end up locked into an “ecosystem”.

However, there is legitimate value in combining email and drive space. Posteo only gives you 2GB for email, and their upgrades are rather expensive.

Also, Mullvad might not be equivalent since they axed the port forwarding feature a while back, making BitTorrent only kind-of usable (incoming connections will not work).

hostops, in Is Proton Unlimited Worth renewing?

If you can live without it, I would say no. They have awful pricing for families. And they have a history of cooperation with governments to leak their users’ data.

    Imprint9816,

Lmao how many times are people going to misrepresent the proton email issue

Why everybody is talking about signal? Isnt a matrix also a good alternative? It requires no phone number + has almost the same feature set. For chatting with family and friend it scales enough good. It is fully open source.

    governorkeagan,

I’ve started using Matrix instead of Discord (not that I really ever used Discord).

    RandomVideos,

Why are so many people comparing discord with matrix instead of revolt

    governorkeagan,

In my case, I’ve seen a lot of Discord groups linked with Matrix. As well as it being mentioned a whole bunch online

    lseif,

personally, signal is a lot easier to set up for a family member who doesnt care about privacy. its just a sms replacement basically, just need a phone number (which is also a downside, of course)

    majestic,

In Matrix all u need is username, email and password and ur ready to go. Homeserver is configured automatically to matrix.org (which is a problem, but nvm)

The downside of matrix is complexity of choosing a client though. And in general understanding a concept of matrix is not easy for regilar person.

For example u can say: “Im on Signal”, but u cant say: “im on FluffyChat”, or Element whatever, it sounds wrong, cuz these are only the clients and everything is working on matrix. But the regular person needs an object: telegram, signal, whatsapp - these all are just single entities. On the other hand u have matrix with clients, homeservers, spaces and all of this complexity, and that is not easy to understand.

Yeah, i hope in future this problem will be resolved.

lwuy9v5, in Switching to more privacy friendly alternatives

Just start using Signal. Don’t push it for a reason for people who don’t care, just let people know “Hey, message me here”. The more people that use it - the better for everyone - whether they benefit or not.

The second part of that is use things like WhatsApp less or not at all, but you can always start with the first part. Maybe you already have folks on signal, and you can just start messaging them there until more folks come over.
