Well this changes that Alice In Chains song for me 🕳️

But this is something that makes English both frustrating and fascinating!

Frozengyro,

All language is like this. It’s a large part of why communication is actually very difficult.

This is awesome. I only know some of one other language but am not as fluent in it. This is good to know, thanks!

They need to put emotional FFT on dating websites.

27% nervous 20% projecting previous bad relationships on you. 18% telling you how they want to be instead of not how they are 15% exaggerating 11% paranoia 10% imposter syndrome

grue, in soyjack

Hmm, I guess etymology (linguistics) sort of counts as science.

Omega_Haxors, (edited ) in soyjack

Memeology is basically “here’s a funny thing that only got popular because a bunch of neo-nazis thought it was funny, then liberals wanted to fit in so they started using it too, then leftists started taking the piss out of it until they started using it unironically too, it’s only once corporations start getting involved does everyone agree to stop using it”

Fell down a hole implies that the hole is vertical and going downwards

letsgo,

Is there a similar implication for stairs when people fall down them?

deo,

I’ve fallen up the stairs, and i’ve fallen down the stairs. I’ve also fallen upstairs and fallen downstairs.

threelonmusketeers,

In that case, does “I fell in a hole” imply that the hole is horizontal and going sideways?

Bach37strad,

That’s how my best friend accidently got my girlfriend pregnant.

Tie your damn shoelaces people!

I find people who actually study language are more tolerant toward different pronunciations and informal speech and colloquialisms and less likely to be grammar nazis.

SuiXi3D,
@SuiXi3D@kbin.social avatar

Probably because they understand that all language is made up and they all change constantly. There’s no hard and fast rules.

bdonvr,

Language science/grammar/etc are all just observations of a natural phenomena, they are not laws to dictate.

shundi82, in 🍸 I like to mix my solutions. The more the merrier.

To quote a great man by the name of Schotty: “Alkohol ist keine Lösung! Alkohol ist eine Löse – das ist ein Riesen-Unterschied!”

chellomere,

There’s the joke in Swedish about alcohol being a lösningsmedel (solvent, but also something that solves problems). Won’t that also work in German but with Lösungsmittel?

I can’t get over that we missed the perfect opportunity for it to be sojaboye instead of soyboy

grayman,

Probably copyright infringement against souljaboy the rapper.

I doubt 4chan would care about something like copyright infringement when they spew slurs and all that
