I miss /r/etymology

Feathercrown, in linguistics

To me, if you partially fall into a hole, ie. foot falls into a small pothole, you’ve fallen in it but not down it.

rbits,

Yeah. I feel like fell down implies you travelled some not insignifcant distance while falling.

MBM,

If I’m walking around in a hole and stumble, I’ve also fallen in a hole (but not into/down)

Feathercrown,

Yes, although I think that’s parsed differently-- you’ve [fallen] [in a hole] not [fallen in] [a hole]

blindsight, in linguistics

Obligatory alt text:

“Do you feel like the answer depends on whether you’re currently in the hole, versus when you refer to the events later after you get out? Assuming you get out.”

XKCD should always include the alt text, imho. It’s often the better punchline (as in this case, imho.)

Is this an I, or a hint that her feelings are complex?

Imaginary feelings

bstix,

She misses the imaginary root.

arin,

Complex relationship

Math Miss You

Dabundis, in "Wow, she must really like maths."

j miss you :^)

redballooon,

Maths, not engineering!

Dabundis,

i will always be current. j will always be the square root of -1. Nothing will ever override this in my brain

Cthulhu1,

J is the current density!

Dabundis,

Capital J is current density, lowercase j is √1

I don’t remember nearly enough science stuff to get most of the jokes here. Oh well.

Afghaniscran,

If I’m not wrong, I think the square root of minus 1 is an imaginary number which is represented by i

Don’t ask me anymore questions about this if you want real answers because I genuinely don’t know any more.

magnetosphere,
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

Okay, that’s a deal. And thanks!

finestnothing,

Yep, sqrt(-1) = i. Powers of i are actually really neat imo since they form a loop: i^0 = 1
i^1 = i
i^2 = -1
i^3 (or i^2 x i or -1 x i) = -i
Now the loop starts:
i^4 = i^2 x i^2 = 1 x 1 = 1
i^5 = i^4 x i^1 = 1 x i = i
etc
Any evaluation of i to the power k boils down to i^(k%4). For example, i^726 = i^2 = -1. I know this was super useful in calc 1 or 2 and not used for any of my other math classes, it’s just a fun concept to me

threelonmusketeers,

Powers of (1/√2 + i/√2) form a nice loop as well :)

Reading the comments here made me think about this!

bloubz, in "Wow, she must really like maths."

I don’t really like this syntax. √ should be used on positive reals only

That’s my take, change my mind

Read the room Buddy, I’m talking about syntax. You can write i²=-1, but not use √ on complex or negative reals

Btw this is a statesian website, we all know the US has terrible maths syntax and conventions

nothacking, in 🍸 I like to mix my solutions. The more the merrier.

Solvent or solute depending on concentration. The drink however is a solution.
