The blight affected all of Europe, yet only Ireland had severe famine because while the French government bought food for their citizens, the English government publicly declared the invisible hand of the free market would fix the famine.

Similarly the Ukraine famine was crop failure due to bad weather conditions that affected all of Eastern Europe. The crop failure wasn’t caused by the Soviets. Yet only Ukrainians died because the Soviets shipped Ukrainian food to Moscow in the same way Irish died because of free markets shipping Irish food to London. (Yes, Ireland was still a net exporter of food during the famine.)

When natural disasters occured it’s, “Millions died because of communism.” Yet when millions die under the free market it’s only the natural disaster and not capitalism.

Blue_Morpho,

Now we have a few famines in history to show us how gaining favor in a political system is not the best way to manage the land.

Doesn’t that also mean The Irish famine shows private land ownership isn’t the best way to manage land?

Weddings have too much going on for anyone to keep track. It’s not a concert. No one is checking for tickets. After the wedding, receptions have assigned seating. But by then, you’d be long gone and planning the next Tolkiened wedding.

Blue_Morpho,

And it’d be something the bride and groom would have to remember for the rest of their lives every time they put on their rings.

That’s not a very convincing argument to not do that every week at a random wedding.

Q would have said,

“Oh the Husnock? Horrible, simply horrible species. Good riddance. Did you ask me here to give Uxbridge a medal or something? Because he certainly doesn’t deserve it! Why I’ve already genocided three species this morning and didn’t even get a thank you.”

Blue_Morpho,

Keeping the same language so no mistranslation is no barrier for religious wars. Shia and Sunni do fine despite both having the Koran in original Arabic.

Blue_Morpho,

And as stated both have their merits and their faults.

Yes! Just because a compiler could guess the type doesn’t mean it should. Elon didn’t understand the meme at all.

Blue_Morpho,

I don’t know where you shop but DeWalt is cheaper than Milwaukee and Makita. Project Farm tests show Milwaukee as usually best but trades wins against Makita.

So no, DeWalt isn’t overpriced. It’s cheaper and less quality. Neither is Milwaukee equivalent to DeWalt. Milwaukee/Makita are better, sometimes incredibly better than DeWalt but at a much higher price.

For example a drill with battery on Amazon is:

DeWalt: $99 Makita: $149 Ryobi: $73 Milwaukee: $144

At Home Depot and Lowes, the price difference between DeWalt and Milwaukee is even bigger.

Blue_Morpho,

It’s funny how quickly Lemmy turns on a dime between “Linux is easier than Windows” in threads about adopting Linux to “spend some time learning the terminal” when presented with a question that should be a single click (installing an app).

Before the hate train starts, I’ve been using Linux off and on for 30 years now. And I still struggle with making distros do things that shouldn’t be that hard because they aren’t hard in Windows.

Blue_Morpho,

Just buy a dongle and you can use regular headphones.

Blue_Morpho,

The sequels made me angry by not addressing that mistake. Animatrix even gave an explanation that the ai “treasured intelligence”. Then it doubled down on the “humans are an endless supply of energy” mistake.

Blue_Morpho,

I use trig every few years when buying a tv. Tv specs always list diagonal but rarely horizontal and vertical which is needed for knowing how a TV will fit in a space.

Blue_Morpho, (edited )

There is a TV special from 1965 that describes your plight:

en.m.wikipedia.org/…/A_Charlie_Brown_Christmas

I think there must be something wrong with me, Linus.

Christmas is coming, but I’m not happy.

I don’t feel the way I’m supposed to feel.

I just don’t understand Christmas I guess.

I like getting presents and sending Christmas cards…

…and decorating trees and all that, but I’m still not happy.

I always end up feeling depressed.

Blue_Morpho,

I think they mean you can’t see the results. So you can downvote a post but if you look at a post it doesn’t show you how many downvoted. It only shows you how many upvoted. It makes it impossible to tell if a subject is controversial.

Linus didn’t have a direct apology to the prototype company. He blamed them for his auctioning off their prototype. Saying, [sic] “Sorry, you made a mistake and we didn’t follow through correctly.” isn’t a real apology.

The company responded by sending the email chain to Gamers Nexus to prove their side of the story.

Blue_Morpho, (edited )

What did he ever do? He seems to be the YouTube equivalent of famous for being famous. I’ve tried watching but it’s a lot of nothing talk and seemingly contrived drama with other YouTubers who also talk a tremendously long time about nothing.

Blue_Morpho, (edited )

Prototype company had initially said that they could keep it.

That was the lie that Linus told that got me to stop watching LTT. The company sent Gamers Nexus the email chain where they clearly had been asking for it back and got the run around until it was auctioned. Then Linus had the gall to say, “We didn’t sell it, it was auctioned.”

LTT is a big company. Mistakes were made. But instead of saying, we screwed up they tried to blame the prototype company when it wasn’t their fault at all.

Blue_Morpho, (edited )

Did Linus ever really apologize for the “we didn’t sell the prototype we auctioned it” comment. I only saw him make excuses about miscommunication (blaming the company that lent the prototype). Or apologize to Gamers Nexus for saying they didn’t do “real” testing?

I only saw a long corporate speak “we will do better” video.

Is it required to wear a silly hat to be a genius mathematician? I’ve seen Euler and his hat. But I didn’t realize Gauss was in on it too.

Blue_Morpho, (edited )

But here’s the gut punch. If you were listening to Physical Graffiti in 1975, 24 years earlier was 1951.

That was the end of big band music. You know, oldies.

Blue_Morpho,

There’s a reason Dooku was friends with Qui-Gon. I like to imagine a better PM which would have shown that.

Like Qui-Gon and Dooku are working from the inside to reform the Jedi and take out Sideous but then QuiGon dies.

Blue_Morpho,

You left out that you need a $70 -$150 meat slicer.

This won’t change until someone sells a yacht to a Senator with fine print that it’s only a perpetual license. Then comes back 3 years later and takes the yacht citing the fine print in the contract.

Blue_Morpho,

I thought it was easy until my kids’ school system tried to do it.

The bus drivers all quit. The only reason they took the job was because it was early and they could start a 9-5 job after their bus drive.

After delays and rescheduling, many schools in the district now start earlier than they did before they tried to make them later.

Blue_Morpho,

Hiring takes time. It also required a lot more money than was budgeted because you need people who don’t have a 9-5. And lastly, not everyone lives in the city where there are buses.
