The joke is that the British have an incredibly problematic history literally centuries-old of taking things from other cultures and going “well, it’s ours the world’s now.“ Many of these communities have been asking them literally for decades to return them, but they simply won’t even to this day.

There was a time where they could maybe make the claim “this is the best way to preserve them,“ but for the vast majority of cases that time has long since passed and it was flimsy to begin with.

Honestly, the first and arguably most important step is recognizing how much of online content is specifically designed to get a reaction out of you, primarily in the form pissing you off.

It's funny how google pretends the music on YouTube isn't straight up piracy and everyone just goes along with it

Most people have extremely weird ideas of what’s considered piracy and what isn’t. Downloading a video game rom is piracy, but if you pay money to some Chinese retailer for an SD card containing the roms, that’s somehow not piracy. Exploiting the free trial on a streaming site by using prepaid visa cards is somehow not...

Literally never seen this argument, not even once. Guarantee you it’s a very small minority just assuaging some vague guilt (which is BS anyway because it’s still not your ROMs).

People do it primarily because it’s convenient. Downloading and testing hundreds if not thousand of roms - not to mention replacing all the bad ones - would take potentially days of work. Or you can spend like $10-$50 and be done with it.

I am under no illusion that 99% of people who pirate, movies, music, games, etc. are doing it for purely selfish reasons and a lot of sites exist to enable it. But the simple fact of the matter is court battles over piracy have been one of the strongest bulwarks for consumer protection/ownership and protecting an open internet over the last 20 years. So yeah, a lot of folks are going to make some drivel up about how they’re preserving history or whatever as they don’t even adhere to basic archive standards and their entire collection is coincidentally only stuff they like lol, but hey, I still like seeing the wins!

When a Torrent disappears from 1337x, how do you find out what happened?

Yesterday there was a controversial movie torrent that was getting 1000s of downloads and was on the “popular this week” page, and today it’s just gone. I went to the uploader’s account page and it’s not there either. Just like it never existed....

I had no idea IPT was so scummy. Guess I’ll be steering clear now.

I’m not sure why you’re under the impression Admins/moderators haven’t censored the Internet literally since it’s inception. As they should sometimes.

The Internet is definitely a mess, but that’s not why.

Most people literally have no idea what you just wrote. I’m not saying jellyfish isn’t the superior option, I’m saying it’s less accessible.

A lot of (all?) email services will allow you to forward your mail from Gmail. My advice would be set that up, have all of them going to a specific folder, and only use your new email moving forward. No harm in allowing some email forwarding while you adjust for the next 6 to 12 months. But that way you can also immediately stop using Gmail itself.

Gdrive unless it is really baked into your daily life in a complicated way, it’s pretty easy to replace. Lots of great services out there.

Proton mail allowed me to export my Google Calendar over with just a few clicks. So that was pretty painless. I’m sure there are other calendar services like that. YMMV.

Google maps is tough lol

You may not be aware of this, but “reeee” is “autistic screeching” and is pretty ableist/offensive. I used to use it a lot myself until I learned that.

If you love piracy you should consider voting/joining your local Pirate Party (pp-international.net)

From wikipedia: “Pirate Party is a label adopted by political parties around the world. Pirate parties support civil rights, direct democracy (including e-democracy) or alternatively participation in government, reform of copyright and patent laws to make them more flexible and open to encourage innovation and creativity, use...

    free speech

In the context of an intense commitment to an open internet I’d honestly need to know a bit more about what this means in my own country’s pirate party. “Free speech” is often just a disingenuous shield when bigots want to be be bigots without social consequences.

Life360 is the subject and the surveyor for this article so take it with a grain of salt. They want this to be normal. However, it does not change the fact that clearly Gen Z is more open to this than previous generations at least to some degree.

As a parent, I do plan on using the services, but definitely not daily and I want my kids to have a say in the matter. What’s important is they feel safe.
