Anyone who wants to install a different OS on a regular desktop is able to do it quite easily, if they can read instructions on a website and an hour or two. It’s similar to swapping tires, which is not difficult but it’s important to read up/get shown how to do it.

But maybe I overestimate the difficulty of replacing the transmission.

Agreed. Unconditionally recommending Linux to regular people isn’t a good idea. In my opinion it’s fine with all the disclaimers about possible disadvantages and recommend them to inform themselves about it.

Just talking about my experience got them interested enough to at some point try to daily drive Linux on their desktop PC, one of them used PopOS for 2 years on their uni laptop at that point.

At the end of the day it’s all about expectations. Most people are uninterested in computers and want to continue using what they know. Others want to experiment and will learn more themselves after being shown something interesting (through YT, conversations, Steam Deck tutorials, …).

Wireguard is awesome and doesn’t even show up on the battery usage statistics of my phone.

With such a small attack surface I don’t have to worry about zero days for vaultwarden and immich.

Linux phones aren’t supported because it’s an Xorg feature. Usually Linux phones use Wayland for the better (touch) experience. If someone wanted to they could implement it on a Wayland compositor, but given that no other OS I know of supports diagonal mode, I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Some products are only available on Amazon, altough there’s always an alternative on another shop.

I try to avoid Amazon because of how many bad products are on their platform. Other shops also list third-party sellers, but by avoiding those platforms and only buying on proper non-marketplace shops the products usually meet a minimum quality. At least my experience with shops that actually specialize in a specific categorie (pc hardware -> mindfactory.de, electronics -> reichelt.de, …) is generally better.

Additionally, companies doing business in the US also follow US laws. If they don’t, they could still be sued overseas (or stop doing business over there).

Agreed. People should learn to read PKGBUILDs, but given how popular Arch(-based) distributions are, I do think many people won’t bother. Afterall, many people download random things all the time.

Fortnite uses both BattleEye and EAC, so it’s at least multiple clicks, depending on the implementation even more.

You’re right, atomic snapshots are a big advantage of CoW fs.

Rsync backups done while the system is running have a chance of being broken, while CoW fs snapshots are instant and seem basically as if the system suddenly lost power.

I don’t think Gnome, KDE and XFCE support moving workspaces between monitors. They only support moving windows between workspaces and monitors.

Sway/i3 have a single set of workspaces while most DEs have a set for each monitor. On these DEs switching between workspaces applies to all monitors.

New to Linux, have a few questions

If you notice issues with Wayland screen sharing or flatpak file manager not opening, try uninstalling Gnome/KDE. The xdg-desktop-portals for different desktops sometimes don’t work correctly while concurrently installed. If you don’t notice issues, it should work fine.

Iirc Gradience punches a hole in the flatpak sandbox for xdg-config/gtk-4.0, which usually is in .config. This makes it work and isn’t a security problem.

Gnome Shell is unaffected because it doesn’t use GTK.

I’ve used zsh for it’s support for posix sh and have my config. But I find fish to be faster with the features I want and it has those features ootb.

Maybe I’ll give zsh another try.

Installing multiple distros at the same time would cause issues because of additional software most DE’s come with (image viewer, …). But yes, it’s possible to switch DE by uninstalling the desktop package group and installing another quite easily. Especially with btrfs snapshots it’s simple to roll back.

Yes, it’s possible to rollback with ublue but that won’t roll back changes in the home directory. So if you switched from Gnome to KDE and then back to Gnome the additional configuration from KDE might conflict with Gnome (especially theming breaks easily).

The other half of the developers have 13" 2160p displays that are sharp either way – but don’t notice the battery life hit.

Iirc there’s ongoing work for proper fractional scaling protocol, so it might get fixed for KDE/QT applications at some point.

Yes. Searching for “DL” for dual language in the title works well for finding multilingual releases with english and german audio.

Thanks for the link. I’m surprised it survived Apple’s review process as I thought such apps weren’t allowed. Now I have a private YouTube altednative to recommend.

Tachiyomi relies on installing sources as additional apks because otherwise they’d have to update the app daily. This is not allowed on Play/App Store.

YouTube ReVanced and other patched apps are also great and not obviously not possible on iOS bexlcause of restrictions.
