I've heard some good things about fluticasone propionate. Normally it's an over the counter allergy med (nasal spray), but I saw a study where a lot of people that used it got their sense of smell (and by extension a lot of taste) back in about 5 days.

Worth a try, at any rate. They sell it at Costco and most drug stores.

I have a theory that moral traits, like many other things in nature, follow a normal distribution. If I'm right, we can make some estimates of who would violate social rules given the chance. The bottom 5% of the distribution are going to do some terrible things. About 45% are going to be kind of shit, maybe not terrible. The remainder will be some level of decent to pretty well behaved, actually. Admittedly, that depends on what we think the mean level of morality really is. Having observed many a group of kids playing, I don't think it's that bad. Honestly that's why so many teenage edgelords and doomers get told to go touch grass; reality will almost never be as bleak as we think it will be. There's a well documented cognitive bias towards negative events, but it IS a bias.

The Boys isn't realistic so much as it's a deliberate deconstruction of the genre and a bit of speculative fiction ("What if Superman was a sociopath" seems to be the question it asks). It has elements of satire too, so it's not really concerned with being fair so much as creating the story conditions that allow it to show us its narrative.

If you want a more "realistic" superhero show I think the 2012 movie Chronicle is more plausible. And yeah it does go badly for some but not for others.

I did a version of this during the height of the pandemic where I hung up a big old clothesline in the front yard and pinned dozens of full size bars to it. Always interesting to see which ones get taken; Twix and KitKat proved the most popular. And the line wasn't empty at night's end! Our neighborhood kids are sweet.

Okay so here's what I don't get. I run a small team of 10. I am SUPER cool about people calling in. I don't give people grief for it. I don't have ridiculous performance expectations. I get that timelines have to slip when people call in. Even my upper management is pretty sane.

YET PEOPLE STILL COME IN SICK. WHY?!?

Motherfucker you're in a union shop with 8 hours sick leave a month and 10+ hours of vacation time per month AND at least 3 floating days you can use whenever AND other leave benefits. Most of you assholes are sitting on like 200-500+ hours of leave in your banks. I tell people to take care of themselves and their families first on the regular. The hell else am I supposed to do? Give people a gold star and a BJ for calling in sick? Keep your goddamned plague at home.

I really do try to model the behavior and stay home when I'm ill. I had Shingles and Hand, Foot and Mouth this year, so they've seen me call out (I was happier before I knew that viral orchitis was a thing and also, boy does it suck to get a shingles out break near your bloody eye).

PC is short for personal computer, which includes both laptop and desktop form factors.

But to answer the question, I generally prefer a desktop because you can upgrade them and work on them more easily.
