True, but another commonly cited exception is that it’s illegal to yell fire in a crowded theater where there is no fire. My assumption is the rationale being, if your speech is likely to present a danger to people it shouldn’t be legal.
But you’re correct, America is pretty tolerant of hate speech, and it does lead to some pretty negative consequences imo.
Probably a better comparison would be countries like Canada or Germany.
EDIT:
I do applaud you for taking the time to research it rather than getting caught up in the sensationalism of a Twitter post like so many others replying to me.
Does the bill need some amendments to clear up some ambiguity? Maybe, idk, I’m not Irish nor am I a legal expert; I know virtually nothing about the Irish legal system.
But based on the BBC article, it sounds like the intention of the bill is to get some hate crime laws on the books for Ireland, which they apparently have none so far.
I am very much in favor of punishing hate crimes/hate speech. Free Speech absolutism is braindead, and those who preach it are often hypocrites. Take Musk for example, self proclaimed free speech absolutist. Sure he allows people to hurl a variety of slurs on his platform but then goes and bans a bunch of left-wing accounts. Advocating for white supremacy is covered by free speech but advocating for socialism is not? That really ought to make you question if free speech is really Musk’s goal.
You didn’t write the kernel, write the libraries, or write the user space applications, did you? No, Linux is the product of a collaborative group of strangers working towards the same goal, a goal that largely doesn’t include any considerations for profit. You haven’t pulled yourself up by your boot straps to make Linux. Hell, even Linus didn’t do that. It’s the product of thousands of people working on it over decades. It’s not capitalist, it’s not individualistic, Linux is communal.
I certainly didn’t mean to make any moral judgments about the kid. I’m not even sure that I think it’s morally wrong (unwise and legally wrong, no doubt, I just don’t think his actions hurt any person and I don’t care if an action hurts a corporation). The kid is clearly talented and I hope he gets the treatment he needs. I sure hope he can eventually make a living with his talents and perhaps eventually use his talents towards positive change.
I used to work as a pentester. It’s an open secret that like a good chunk of people in the industry are former criminals. But former is kind of the keyword. Not only is he doing crime after being arrested and still under surveillance, but he can’t even lie and say he won’t do it again. The kid is unhireable, at least not until he can get his compulsions under control.
Worth also mentioning the Tolkien estate is notoriously letigous. There are piracy sites that specifically ban Tolkiens works from being uploaded for that very reason.
You don’t need jellyfin and Plex. They both do the same thing, so just pick one.
And per the torrenting; isn’t the point of using Debrid that you’re NOT torrenting? You’re letting the service provider do the torrenting for you and they just serve up the file to you via direct download over https. And in this case, your IP isn’t exposed in the same way it is when you torrent.
I’m not all that familiar with Debrid and you’re not exactly clear on what the issue is. But I will mention that I don’t think jellyseerr will work for you in this setup. Jellyseerr is meant to work with sonarr/radarr. It looks like to request content you have to add it to your watchlist in Plex instead.
As for VPN, isn’t the point of Debrid to avoid torrenting and direct download only? VPN probably isn’t necessary, but if you’re paranoid then just make sure only the Debrid rclone is going through the VPN, you don’t want Plex to go through the VPN as then you won’t be able to connect to it from your LAN.
