LinkOpensChest_wav,

Someone pointed out that it looks like the setup for some sea lioning, and now I tend to agree.

LinkOpensChest_wav,

My heros will only ever possibly be my neighbors wherever I live.

That’s what I’m always saying! I know so many good working class folks in my friend group and neighborhood. I don’t feel compelled to look up to some celebrity who’s ultimately a complete rando to me.

There are artists and other famous people whose work I respect and admire, but my heros are people I know irl

LinkOpensChest_wav,

This is the same thing as people who claim Trump’s not racist. It’s so patently absurd to claim that you can’t see evidence of her transphobia even when it’s right in front of you that people are left dumbfounded. It’s so obvious you’re not saying this is earnest.

Someone help me out, isn’t there a name for this technique? It’s not “gish gallop” because it’s not an endless stream of out-of-pocket claims, but rather one claim that’s so colossally batshit that it can’t be addressed. It’s like someone saying, “No one’s produced evidence of humans requiring oxygen to live.” It’s a way to successfully dodge an issue because of the absurdity of the claim being made. Is it called “red herring”?

LinkOpensChest_wav,

Same! If you think of it, please let me know 🙏

Whatever it is, it’s pretty common to the point that I can predict the entire conversation:

Me: [Posts links to numerous transphobic tweets by Rowling].

Them: That’s not transphobic, she’s just saying [superficial bad-faith reading of the tweet in question and a statement about transgender people being “too sensitive”]

If there’s not a term for this, someone needs to coin one lol

I used to engage, but I’ve learned from my tenure on reddit to recognize the pattern and that there’s no point

LinkOpensChest_wav,

There’ren’t no peeps whomst’d make u say’t

LinkOpensChest_wav,

Hmmm. I feel like it’s more a deliberate distortion of reality.

The way I see it, it’s closely related to the approach used by segregationists who would use things like gerrymandering or poll tax to exclude Black voters and then claim that it’s not racist policy because they didn’t expressly mention race.

LinkOpensChest_wav,

Ayyyyy

If that’s what you think this says, then you completely misunderstand anarchism.

This book describes current and past societies that have functioned using anarchist principles such as horizontality, mutual aid, none of which are utopian, but all of which are significantly more equitable than systems like capitalism, feudalism, authoritarianism, and statehood.

LinkOpensChest_wav,

Amen. One of the things I like best about anarchism is it introduces concepts that we can begin to practice immediately vs. awaiting some future revolution.

I really like the book I linked because to me it’s so much easier to read and digest than some of the famous works by authors like Kropotkin or Goldman.

Audible Anarchist has also uploaded a few chapters from the book, which I’ve been listening to on my walks: piped.privacydev.net/…/UCaO1QA8QL99_eb0XhJI2Fyw

LinkOpensChest_wav,

That’s a reeeeaaaal stretch, and I think you know it lol

Seems to me more likely that OP is supporting veganism

LinkOpensChest_wav,

I would however like to clarify that neither Republicans nor Democrats will solve the systemic issues in any meaningful way, and it’s not saying “both sides are the same” to point this out. I literally voted for Biden, but I still have Democrats accuse me of “voting for Trump” when I point out ways the Democrats do things like uphold a capitalist economy, extend the reach of fascist agencies like ICE, take power away from the working class, compromise with right-wing extremists, and observe a hierarchical system.

I can agree that Republicans are far worse, and I can cast my vote, while still being honest about the situation.

LinkOpensChest_wav,

Important point: “Biodegradable” plastic doesn’t biodegrade in the same way as something like a banana. It disinitegrates to the point that it is invisible to humans, but it introduces microplastics into the environment.

LinkOpensChest_wav,

Black plastic bags aside, it looks like a nice place for a stroll and a picnic

LinkOpensChest_wav,

Oh, that’s really great though. I didn’t know.

BruceTwarzen, to asklemmy

Is there a Spotify alternative that has no ads?

I pay for Spotify for 7 years or so now and i'm so sick of all the ads. After every update there seems to be an: oops, sorry, you have ads now. Podcasts are filled with ads. I was just listening to a podcast where they shoved in 3 ads mid-sentence. How long until musicians put ads in their songs. I'm just so sick of it.

LinkOpensChest_wav,

It always used to surprise me that bands like Nirvana would play with the Dwarves, considering their reputation and actions at shows

LinkOpensChest_wav,

They were violent pricks at their shows. They’d beat the shit out of random people at their shows just to be edgy.

I come from the school of showing unity, support, and mutual aid. Dancing at shows was one thing, but deliberately hurting people is fucked up imo.

LinkOpensChest_wav,

After seeing this post, I’m determined to more than double my potato salad consumption

LinkOpensChest_wav,

I’m similar to your kid. I have celiac and also severe lactose intolerance. Fortunately, a lot of candy is free of most allergens. For example, Sour Patch kids and Laffy Taffy. (Not sure if it’s vegan though.) I also had a nephew with a peanut allergy, so I try to read labels when I buy Halloween candy (though this year I decided to reverse trick or treat the houses on my block with kids and then turn the lights off, since kids don’t really go out anymore like they used to.)

LinkOpensChest_wav,

Good to know, thanks! I think most of the candy I eat is vegan. In fact, it would probably be an easy switch for me to go vegan.

LinkOpensChest_wav,

I’d like to add Lakota People’s Law Project and Minnesota Freedom Fund

LinkOpensChest_wav,

Denny’s won’t ask you to leave if you flog the bishop inside their restaurant because they can’t afford to lose a paying customer in this economy

LinkOpensChest_wav,

Holy shit beebarfbadger, how’d you get in here?

I can tell by the knife and gorilla tape you’re holding that you’re here to help me with home repairs, so thanks!
