RBWells,

Ded. I’d be nothing but a mass of stitches and have been burned enough times, if that didn’t heal id be dead.

Slow healing is the one thing I notice the most about getting older. I’m in good shape and all, well nourished, it’s not lifestyle. I broke my finger and it took two years to heal completely. As a kid that would have been 6 weeks, at 50 something it took 104 weeks.

RBWells,

I was driving one day, in the early 1990s, singing along with Elton John, “love I feel it in my hands, I can tell by the things I could do with another man…” as I had since I was a little kid, when I suddenly realized that probably wasn’t what he was saying. It still sounds like that is what he is saying.

I see quite a lot of Elton John in these answers, maybe he just didn’t enunciate.

RBWells,

Strongly agree. Potatoes down here are never cheap. Same with apples. But I can often get pineapple for $2, bananas are cheap here too. And lots of the Latin American food is reasonable. A huge bag of rice is very cheap per lb here.

RBWells,

I’m American, and do use jarred sauce if I have it, but more often what I have is tomato paste, a half bottle of wine hanging out in the refrigerator and some garlic or olive oil and butter. Anchovies. Usually have canned peeled tomatoes too, but those do have to cook awhile to taste good.

I guess I don’t set out to replicate jarred sauce, generally speaking, but can quickly dress pasta for supper with something good.

RBWells,

That’s me! This has to be a fundamental difference in what we consider mashed potatoes. You are going for something textureless and processed like whipped potato porridge, I like them to be, well, mashed potatoes. Recognizably potatoes, mashed up and seasoned. The pressure cooked ones are fluffy as hell, they yield to a gentle fork smash.

RBWells,

We have a friend who says “There is no problem alcohol cannot make worse.”. I do like cocktails but just one is usually my limit as I don’t really like being drunk. It’s more part of food culture for many of us.

RBWells,

Yes, the copy button at the top.

Honestly - How much will you sacrifice for a better world?

Confronted with the likelihood that we cannot achieve climate goals, confront socioeconomic inequality, and ultimately build a better world without significant personal sacrifice: How much are you personally capable and willing to lose? I mean this in the most earnest way possible. Acknowledging the likely possibility of working...

RBWells,

Is it guaranteed? I’d much rather lift everyone up to at least my standard of living, than squash everyone down to the lowest common denominator. But if you told me every family on earth could have what we do if I alone lived on the street, begging from them for the rest of my life, sure, I’d do it

RBWells,

I’ve first seen snow twice.

The first time, I was 7 and it snowed overnight in Florida (a little). I saw it and ran in to wake my mom up but she kept saying “it’s frost, go back to bed”. She also made me go to school and the only other kids in my class were 2 kids from Michigan.

I was 20 when I first saw snow falling from the sky. Was in England, looked out the window and panicked because I thought there was ash falling from the sky. Asked what was burning and my boyfriend (Scottish) said “That’s snooo, lass”.

RBWells,

This has been true around here since I was in high school (or that’s when I noticed) but once you get as old as I am now it’s different, only the people who took care of themselves look good and the distribution is more equal. So I don’t think guys are putting zero effort in, maybe as regards style but they must be maintaining their bodies at about the same rate, exercise and diet wise.

RBWells,

This one. 2014 Honda Accord with manual transmission. I love this car, and want it to last forever.

Second favorite was a Chevy Geo Prism, also manual (I kinda hate automatic transmission) that got the best gas mileage of any car I have owned before or since. Overhead cam, perfect engine design. Body fell apart, but that engine would not stop and was so efficient.

RBWells,

If you don’t have hard water, maybe. Not here. Soap scum on the tub, soap doesn’t remove dirt, just sort of locks it on. Which does not matter as much on skin but is disastrous for hair. I have known a couple people who had to cut their hair off after trying to wash it with soap.

If I was to the point where I could only afford one, I’d get shampoo. If that was impossible for awhile, water only is the way I would go. It works ok, most stuff rinses off.

My beagle has suddenly started resource guarding random stuff. What should I do to get this behavior to stop?

I’ll start off by saying that he has a bad past life. He was obviously abused by his previous owners and straight up abandoned in the woods. He has bad anxiety that he is on Prozac for, and it seems to be helping for the most part....

RBWells,

Ah. There is no punishment built in here, unless you consider removing attention to be punishment. It’s positive reinforcement when they do something right, the happy words and pets. Ignoring them sometimes to convince them you are ok and so are they, not reassuring them. Odd, sure, but not at all mean. They don’t seem ruined, I probably just am not explaining it right. Certainly not kicking them, what the heck?

RBWells,

Barking is an overstatement, lol. But a rough noise to get their attention, a soft and high pitched word for praise and plenty of cuddling just on my terms, not when working at home.

It’s certainly working, can’t argue with results. Both dogs are calmer and behaving better, easier to train now. Not as reactive.

RBWells,

No, I do understand what you mean and it’s the same thing I like about the baroque music. It’s almost like modern house music, the kind where they take one riff and play it out fifty different ways, it is sort of trancey and doesn’t yell at you for attention, it pulls instead of pushing.

RBWells,

Well, in terms of weight control I gamed the system by staying underweight when young (often very unhealthily and anxiously so) so that middle age weight gain got me to a healthy weight.

I can’t diet because of the early eating disorder, and can’t quite get to intuitive eating either. So as someone else mentioned, I do limit the hours I eat not what or how much.

Lots of beans and rice. Love cheese too. Meat & fruit every week but not every day. Grow some vegetables every season but not enough to rely on; but in fall & spring have fresh greens from the yard, and whatever else I can manage. Make sourdough bread each week. Junk food of choice is chips (both crisps and fries).

Would say a typical day is coffee around 10, a lunch of sandwich or leftovers around noon, a coffee at 1600, a supper around 20:00 because I cook after work and it’s hard to have it earlier. Supper of beans and rice and greens, or meat and rice and greens, or pasta or stir fry, but something creative at least a couple times a week (tonight was poblanos stuffed with black beans, greens, and cheese on a tomato/chipotle sauce). Supper the main meal, not my ideal but most important meal with family. On weekends a late brunch or lunch and meal at teatime only.

If I could have only one sort of meal forever? Beans, rice, and greens.

What things do you do while eating?

I have a terrible habit of watching Youtube while I eat, and then one video turns to ten and I’ve wasted the entire day. I’ve tried just not watching it while I eat, but JUST eating is so incredibly boring that I cave in and turn it on regardless. I can’t get any work done while eating either, since it takes me out of flow...

RBWells, (edited )

Maybe you aren’t eating the right foods? I am older so smaller calorie allocation now and honestly if I don’t enjoy something I don’t eat it. No room for crappy food.

Make or buy something healthy and so delicious you can enjoy it.

And music is a good accompaniment to food, that is engaging but won’t make you mindlessly overeat.

RBWells,

It does here too. It’s not an unclear thing, just not used all the time so people don’t remember.

Biweekly is every other week, fortnightly.

Semiweekly is twice a week.

RBWells,

Yes.

My ex was a chill stoner who got radicalized on the internet and became an abusive alcoholic raging racist, then got sober but is still an angry right wing asshole.

I was selfish/self-centered as fuck as a teenager and gained patience and perspective over time, I think most people do change in that way, become more aware of others, nicer. Not everyone, obviously. But most.

RBWells,

There are so many. Father John Misty, the cheeky bastard, writes lyrics so well. In Goodbye Mr. Blue -

When the last time was our last time, if only then I knew that the last time was our last time, would have told you that the last time comes too soon.

And from The Head and the Heart back when they were making magic with Josiah Johnson -

The world keeps spinning, a little too fast. If we don’t slow down soon it might not last. So just for a moment, just for a moment, let’s be still.

RBWells,

We train ours to walk at heel, loose leash. But if they are together they will still pull and bark aggressively at other dogs. They are in training, not completely trained.

I’m not sure what you mean by properly, though. I would consider the dog walking close to me & slightly behind a good trained walk, and do if possible cross to avoid giving them temptation if there is a dog. Better to give them a chance to be good, than to have to correct them.

Is there a dog scene?
