This post gets it. It can stink that not every post has a bunch of conversations around it, but oh well.

Where the conversations do happen, they happen organically, and are often quite high quality, comparatively.

We can be thankful that Lemmy is (as of yet) mostly unencumbered with the problem of bots pretending to be legitimate users to drive the conversation specific directions (forum sliding, for example), and due to that we have some quality discussions that are able to happen.

Largest Study of its Kind Shows Outdated Password Practices are Widespread (www.cc.gatech.edu)

“More than half of the websites in the study accepted passwords with six characters or less, with 75% failing to require the recommended eight-character minimum. Around 12% of had no length requirements, and 30% did not support spaces or special characters.”

Obligatory: “12345? That’s amazing! I’ve got the same combination on my luggage!”

This. Congress is in control of auditing the Pentagon.

The most the IRS would do would be auditing the incomes of people who work at the Pentagon.

Badly put together meme.

Nice catch.

Yeah not my fault its a badly considered meme.

I was just responding to the second half.

The IRS isn’t in charge of auditing the Pentagon, congress is.

It’s a non-answer that their privacy policy explicitly states that they will collect this type of information and that they stipulate what kind parties they can share that info with?

www.plex.tv/about/privacy-legal/

That’s the straightest answer that you’re going to get. Privacy policies like this are bullshit, but they’re also the norm so acting like it’s a non-answer after 20 years of this being the norm seems a little… naive, perhaps?

Nah, another reference to the book Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. In the book, owning a real, live animal is considered a mark of high status. However, animals are hard to care for and die easily, so many people “fake” that status by having an artificial animal. In the book, Deckard and his wife are quite devastated over the loss of his goat.

That’s my fault in the original comment, I remembered it as a sheep, not a goat, because of the title of the book.

Basically the plot of one of my favorite films of all time, The Stupids, except they think someone is stealing their garbage, and they intend to find out who.

Kind of like the more proper “hell of” instead of “hella.”

Richard Stallman wants you to know: GNU/Linux was always a political statement.

In other words, you don’t have to choose! They’re basically the same thing!

Everyone chooses their families. Sometimes that’s your biological family, sometimes it isn’t.

Surprise, your local cops are authoritarian pieces of shit who think the law only applies to citizens, who they view as an invading force here to harm cops.

All Cops Are Bastards, and the systems that uphold them as well.

For what its worth, it seems like the board is claiming that Altman’s constant wheeling and dealing of the technology, including giving Microsoft a minority stake in the LLC, rubbed them the wrong way, and they felt that his increasingly transparent desire for profits was antithetical to the original purpose of the OpenAI Non-Profit, which was to safeguard AGI, not to market and sell it.

Honestly, I felt that way too, so I’m on the boards side with this one. It felt pretty clear that Altman had tossed out the “beneficial for humanity” goal in favor of “beneficial to me and my wallet.”
