Repairing things used to be normal. From that point of view, conservatism is perfectly right.

Conservatism has only ever existed to keep an aristocracy. Look at history, it’s literally why it developed as an ideology, because a lot of the aristocracy from Europe didn’t actually want the aristocracy to end, so they needed to make up political positions that supported the idea that there should be an untouchable elite to whom laws don’t apply.

It has literally never, ever existed to “conserve” anything like natural resources or the rights of individuals. At it’s core it was about retaining Kings, Queens, Dukes, and Lords without actually keeping those, but instead making it about wealth.

So yeah, gonna hard disagree on that. Conservatism is the source making laws that deny you the ability to repair, the conservatives aren’t the ones out here fighting for it.

I would think if the largest community was programmers, those kind of videos would be suggested, not this shit.

My principle is I don’t hang out in fucking Nazi spaces.

Like, I wouldn’t go to a bar that advertised itself as a Nazi bar, and I wouldn’t upload my content to a site like this, that has enough Nazis on it that they’re in the recommended videos for a fucking Louis Rossman video.

If Louis is happy hanging out at Nazi bars, that’s on him and you can hardly hang that on “principles.”

What’s really wild is that people arguing for things like Right-to-Repair would be anywhere near right-wing to begin with.

Like, Louis, you don’t see how the entire conservative ideology undermines ideas like right-to-repair? How can you be like “Yeah, I trust these guys who all would shut down the things I’m arguing for,” and just be oblivious to it?

For what its worth, it seems like the board is claiming that Altman’s constant wheeling and dealing of the technology, including giving Microsoft a minority stake in the LLC, rubbed them the wrong way, and they felt that his increasingly transparent desire for profits was antithetical to the original purpose of the OpenAI Non-Profit, which was to safeguard AGI, not to market and sell it.

Honestly, I felt that way too, so I’m on the boards side with this one. It felt pretty clear that Altman had tossed out the “beneficial for humanity” goal in favor of “beneficial to me and my wallet.”

The real issue is humanity is pumping out more and more content each year, to the point where it would take several lifetimes to consume it all. This means there is no big central pillar anymore, simply everyone is into just their own stuff. Everyone’s tastes are so unique that other than some cursory similarities in taste most people still have wildly different preferences. It was always this way, but now with near endless content of books, blogs, websites, news, tv shows, movies, music, and video games people have more choice than ever and each choice means they are missing more and more other content by making that choice.

Its so overwhelming its making some people check out of media consumption nearly entirely.

Thanks for recognizing this. It’s the cops, it’s the DAs, its the Prosecutors that work for the city/state/nation (RIP Aaron Swartz, a victim of one of those), it’s the judges who take all cops word as unfettered truth and do nothing but view regular citizens with unbridled skepticism and contempt, its the mayors/governors who are scared of the cops and keep capitulating to them because the cops just won’t do anything except draw a paycheck if they don’t like what you’re doing politically. The feeble milquetoast broken losers that bend over and take it from the cops because they’re scared of the cops abusing them or the fucking MAGAs abusing them are the enablers. We’re seeing the pinnacle of it right now, endlessly using kid gloves on Donald “Literal Treasonous Spy” Trump because “oh but he might appeal” and “oh but his followers might do nasty things to us, so we don’t want to upset them.” What a bunch of loser ass fucking pussies. So worried about their own skins that they’re going to let us fall into fascism under the waffling of “But it’s not our fault the Republicans and the Cops and Judges hate citizens and think they’re all criminal scum, we have to follow these crazy, unhinged laws that they wrote after literally rigging elections to benefit themselves. There’s literally nothing we can do!” They’re enablers because anybody who gave a single damn would know there’s plenty they could fucking do, and yes it means calling Republicans on their bullshit chicanery and fucking doing something about it.
