Zink,

Oh yeah, it wasn’t exactly fun. I remember wondering how the hell adults do it since they have bills to pay and a bunch of other crap to deal with.

But still, being an adult in general is way nicer than being a student.

Zink,

See, game pass I’m cool with because it’s an up-front transparent deal that you are buying time to access this library, and the library also changes. There is no pretense of “buying a copy” or whatever.

It’s nice for modern games anyway. For classic stuff that I want to have access to forever, I alreadty have access to that stuff forever. It might stink for the kids who are playing their “classics” right now, though.

Zink,

Thanks again!

The chrome book is in a state where I can boot from the USB drive and try out whatever I want, so I’m going to take a look!

Zink,

Yeah but with the ancient elvish magic and longevity and blah blah and wave of the hands annnd his ears are fine!

Zink,

It is a very boomer thing to proudly announce when you block somebody, isn’t it?

Zink,

I think you’re agreeing with me there. People want other choices, but they get ignored because they have no chance of winning.

It would be great if we couple coordinate and just try it one year, but change needs to be able to happen gradually too. Our system in practice actively punishes third party voting by your vote benefiting the major party you DON’T want.

I bet people would want ranked choice or similar if given the option. I think the establishment really doesn’t like that idea and actively works against it, though.

Zink,

The problem there isn’t that we (assuming the US) don’t want third parties, it’s that our voting system encourages party consolidation rather than cooperation. That only gets more true the higher in the government you go.

Zink,

That’s one of the big values for me, the effortless smart device support. Sure I know tech shit and I block ads in every browser I use, but it’s nice when members of my family can just use the YouTube app, full featured, on whatever TV/phone/tablet they have access to at the moment. It’s not a matter of whether I can watch YouTube for free without seeing ads, it’s a question of whether the convenience and creator support are worth the cost of a drive thru meal per month. Add in YouTube music and I don’t even think about it any more.

It’s an ease of use thing, kind of like how Steam ended PC game piracy for many people.

Zink,

Thanks, I appreciate your reply!

And yeah, I guess it’s easy to gloss over the ongoing nature sometimes. People think “how do I fix myself” but there isn’t ever a fix. There are incremental improvements as long as you’re working at it. But then one day, you look back and realize it has accumulated into a big difference.

Zink,

Good to know, thanks!

Fortunately I already have like 4 DeWalt batteries. Somebody gave me a couple as a gift some time after I got the tool set. We definitely still have a Ryobi battery or two around as well!

Zink,

This was me, with my few random ryobi tools, until I needed something new and saw one of those big combos of several tools from DeWalt was half price. So I lucked out being in the right place at the right time and got the best of both worlds.

Zink,

This is why I still have windows on the machines at home. There’s always some niche device, especially for my wife’s crafting, that only supports windows.

But then at work thanks to VMs I use windows and Linux side by side every day.

Zink,

I like DDG, but I believe it uses the Bing API to get the search results. So even though it’s a privacy focused site, you’re still getting results from a giant corporation.

Zink,

Or even “we are all domestic terrorists”

Zink,

I remember thinking they were so neat.

And now in middle age I’m wearing what is essentially a full blown smart phone on my wrist.

So here we are in the future. I have no flying cars but I have my calculator watch and startrek/dick-tracy super combo device, damn it!

Zink,

There’s also the episode where the three Ferengi go back in time to (I think) the Roswell incident in mid 20th century USA.

Quark is repeatedly appalled at the stuff the hu-mons are doing to hurt themselves and destroy the planet. Smoking and testing nuclear fission bombs come to mind.

Zink,

Just the mental image of this is beautiful.

Zink,

I am watching S03 E23 “Family Business” right now!

Not much of the Sisko in this one though. Heavy on Ferengi family drama.

Zink,

I am absolutely looking forward to it! I have been enjoying this rewatch much more than I remember liking the show years ago.

I’m at this sweet spot where I know the broad strokes but don’t remember all the details because it’s been a long time. I can anticipate stuff and see pieces falling into place, but I still get surprises here and there.

Zink,

Some of the meme gods of !risa will grace other communities with their fire hose of content.

Zink,

In this case, the nitrogen gas was plumbed directly from the big tank & heat exchanger to the various points of use.

Zink,

I recently finished season 1 of DS9 in my current risa-inspired rewatch. I understood that reference!

Zink,

Bitwarden has been working well for me, and it’s open source and free to use. I started using it when it was clear that using LastPass was not a long term solution.

Zink,

I read it as the mime unleashing the horrible power of his voice, which he keeps hidden away from the world in times of peace.

It’s like Alanis Morissette in Dogma.
