Things that make me angry about my current smartphone Samsung Galaxy S21Ultra on a Verizon plan is the mandatory software updates in which they install WITHOUT MY PERMISSION stupid apps like Netflix and addictive gambling games and stacking block games and Candy crush. God knows what else they install without my permission. I...
They are good products, even if they don’t have the nerdy cool factor. Each day I’m working on old C/C++ code in Linux, so having my phone be a reliable appliance instead of yet another computer to fuck around with is totally fine for me. I liked my past Android phones too though.
No carrier bloatware and very long software support.
I was just continuing my risa-inspired rewatch of DS9 last night, and it made me think of you all here.
I think its been a really long time since my last watch through, and the upside is that a lot of it feels fresh again, even though I know the characters and the general trajectory of the plot. I think I like this show even more already.
I’m in season 2 and just a few episodes back was “Cardassians,” wherein a Cardassian orphan living on the planet as a Bajoran sets the scene for Garak to flex all over the fucking place.
Yeah, pretty much. I figured it was probably implied that I’m in the states. :)
I mean, SI units are objectively the best, and align with metric in most cases, but my brain is conditioned to accept Fahrenheit and miles per hour natively. Celsius and km/h have to go through an interpreter to convert them.
I have to say though, km/h has that “0 to 100” thing going for it that Fahrenheit does. 100 isn’t the fastest you’ll go, but it’s a typical highway speed.
Whatever your grew up with will always seem more intuitive for most people. But given that I grew up with Fahrenheit, the whole “0 is cold as fuck, 100 is hot as fuck” thing works for me.
This is me. Am white dad on vacation this week. It’s not that cold, like 70F, but there has been chilling rain all week. I’m the guy not only soaked in my shorts and t-shirt among a sea of ponchos, but still sticking my head into the fountains and stuff.
I finally tried out Linux Mint this year at work (we use Fedora for some of our different tasks). It arms like such a nice experience out of the box, and I’d put it on a family computer in a second.
That’s pretty much the process I went through ~20 years ago. The individual has to care about actual evidence and truth rather than the “truth = agree with me” crap that is common.
I think a big, big part of it is realizing that the people on your side are not necessarily arguing in good faith just because they’re on the “correct” team.
And that’s a pretty big deal when “just ignore that, it’s not real” is a deep core practice of your team.
My hyper focus makes me a good programmer. Unfortunately I only activate it every couple days. With their powers combined… I’m worth keeping employed. 👍🏻
