I’m mostly half-serious.

You’re right that we don’t need to, but mathematicians can use this method to prove that two infinite sets are the same size. This is how we know that the infinite set of whole numbers is the same size as the infinite set of integers. We can also prove that the set of real numbers is larger than the set of whole numbers.

I’m not quite sure how else to explain it, so I’ll link a Numberphile video where they do the demonstration on paper: www.youtube.com/watch?v=elvOZm0d4H0&t=19s . Here you can see why it’s useful to try to establish this 1-1 correspondence. If you can’t do so, then the size of the two infinite sets are not equal.

balderdash9,

Soooo who starts it again? Guess that’s a lesson you only learn once lol

balderdash9,

This is actually one of the things I would wish for if I had a magic lamp.

  1. The ability to grant or take away perfect immortality to any living thing.
  2. To be the most intelligent human to ever exist (so far)
  3. The ability to see any point in space and time.

You’re right that it would likely have psychological ramifications (probably end up like Brandon Stark from GOT). But it would be fun for a couple thousand years.

balderdash9,

Facebook tier memes. Please let’s not make this a thing

balderdash9,

I’m a layperson. I don’t care about what technical benefits it has on paper when its impractical to use. So I have to agree with OP on this one.

balderdash9,

It supports transparency like PNGs, and animations like GIFs, and is generally not a bad format on its own due to its balance of quality and file size.

The issue is that support for it is lacking; a large number of major media applications don’t have any WebP functionality, meaning that an image being WebP format only adds an irritating extra step where you have to convert it to PNG to use it. The other issue is that the adoption of the format online is disproportionately high, compared to its adoption by major app developers. It’s bizarrely common to download an image, only to find that you can’t use it because your software (I.e. Photoshop, Clip Studio, OBS) doesn’t support it, so now you have to either convert it to PNG somehow or hunt down a new file that isn’t a WebP. For visual artists of all kinds, this is a tremendous pain in the ass, and it’s pretty obvious that it doesn’t need to be that way in the first place.

balderdash9,

But why is it better? My experience is clicking on webp format opens in browser instead of my image viewer

balderdash9,

No, there is definitely a list of things you can make fun of on this site, capitalism, American healthcare/infrastructure/etc, bills/how expensive things are, killing the rich, etc. It doesn’t matter how tasteless or dark the meme is so long as you direct it at the right subject matter. This is effectively an echo-chamber.
