I only have Windows because it’s the only way to run Ableton Live with plugins on your own hardware.

RedHat is unapologetically the Enterprise Linux so they’re very close to Windows Server in that way.

banneryear1868, to asklemmy in What cheap tool/gadget do you use that greatly improves your daily life?

I got the one without handles so it’s just a round cup, fits in the car cupholders that way. There’s a whole bunch of customizations like that though, you got handles, different sizes, colors, materials, even an insulated one, and all interchangeable parts from what I’ve seen. There’s a stainless steel one that looks like any other travel mug.

banneryear1868, (edited ) to asklemmy in Why in the year 2024 and with all the knowledge humans have now do people still believe in religion?

“Religious suffering is the expression of real suffering and also a protest against it. Religion is the opium of the masses. Religion is the heart of a heatless world. Religion is the soul of soulless conditions.”

Religion isn’t a separate thing from culture that can be cleaved off like this. The form it takes is contingent on conditions of people’s lives and power structures. People also don’t make a conscious choice to believe or disbelieve in religion, if you’re an atheist you can’t just willingly choose to believe. Society is not directed by the willful actions of people’s collective beliefs like this either, it’s more a Darwinian process.

Also civil religion is a thing and it doesn’t necessarily align with what people think of “religion” but operates in a very similar way. A lot of atheists are probably adherents to aspects of civil religion without knowing or thinking of it this way.

banneryear1868, to memes in Everything I need is still in in the old settings windows that haven't changed in 23 years

Yeah I’ve been a mixed environment sysadmin for many years and still to keep need a Windows desktop at home and powershell makes it all happen. I basically do a complete debloat of my install and and all that. I actually like the overall Windows 11 desktop environment but omg the bloatware is insane I don’t know how people use it without knowing how to clean it up.

banneryear1868, to asklemmy in Why are there so many apps that could be websites?

I want apps to be programs again*

banneryear1868, (edited ) to asklemmy in What gifts that you received for Christmas this year are already in the trash?

We call them a “stupid tax” but infrequently buying them is pretty harmless. I don’t mind group lotto either it can be fun to buy in and run the numbers out over a course of a few months. There’s some charity lottos I’ve done before.

banneryear1868, (edited ) to asklemmy in What's a food you love, that isn't worth making from scratch?

I don’t have enough meat scraps and carcasses coming through to make proper demi-glace or stock in the quantity I use so I prefer a dehydrated powder used in restaurant service for home use. My scraps usually end up in a single soup recipe.

And yeah I love making French stews and all that, and I make components of French meals, but I’m talking like a full contemporary French menu from appetizer to dessert. To me that’s a very simple menu, some basic ingredients of exceptional quality, each prepared in a way that makes them taste as good as they can using techniques it takes a lot of experience to get good at, with some experimental or playful element that isn’t too pretentious, then plated and presented in a creative way. That type of meal I will gladly pay for because it’s almost the fact someone else has imagined it and made it real that makes it worth it, like I wanna see what kind of tricks they’re doing that I wouldn’t have thought to do. Not only that but everything has to come together perfectly for it to work, and even if I know I can technically do it all, can I do it all at once by myself as a home cook? That’s why I respect the restaurant process for this style of food.

Kenji is king <3

banneryear1868, to asklemmy in What groups you are unwillingly associated with? How you handle it?

The PMC. I’m a professional worker from a rural upbringing and a lot of my coworkers came from wealthier backgrounds with highly educated parents. I don’t really do anything to “handle it” it’s just noticeable cultural differences.

banneryear1868, to linuxmemes in Year of Linux on the Desktop

I’d love if Linux could do everything but I still keep a Windows laptop. Mostly because I don’t want to go forum diving to update the firmware on my synthesizers or exert effort into something that should be thoughtless and trivial.
