Quirks. And. Features.

Casualty of Trump for sure, seems like he was just the right age and identity to get wrapped up in it and it sort of fed into his brand of comedy. Wish these guys could rip on liberals without going fascist or becoming sincerely right wing.

I watched them and they were alright. It’s disturbing how serious the allegations are yet no legal actions are being taken against him. It’s like he’s in this place of irredeemable limbo. I’ve volunteered with inmates and believe people can be redeemed but not if they can’t face their wrongdoings.

Yeah you gotta give him credit and really a lot of the producers and editors on foodtube work between channels. It’s sort of more like a community than other genres on YouTube are which I enjoy.

banneryear1868, to linuxmemes in Year of Linux on the Desktop

Yeah I’m a Linux and Windows sysadmin for almost 15 years and don’t really care what it is in practice, just disagree with Microsoft on many things. People have actually argued to me here why I shouldn’t use Windows Server in an enterprise setting, as if a sysadmin who doesn’t prefer Windows would have any bearing on such things. It’s also funny how people seem to think managing Windows is very different than managing Linux, you’re basically doing the same things, I really only interact with Windows in the same manner I interact with Linux it’s just remote powershell instead of ssh. Building Windows server is just running a powershell script, building Linux server is just running the playbook.

Also I disable mostly everything through group policy on Windows and remove all the dumb stuff with remove-appxpackage. Use both for workstations too.

I respect how provocative it is because that’s a very hard thing to try for intentionally. As a concept car it absolutely works.

banneryear1868, (edited ) to memes in America: Getting ready for another election. Rest of the world:

The way I see it in America is any real left political representation was destroyed during the cold war and the liberals co-oped the language of the left while cleansing it of it’s economic ramifications. When you think of how many activists and organizers in the 60s were openly socialists vs today it tells a lot. MLK Jr. and Rosa Parks for instance are these liberal heroes but their significance as socialists is completely whitewashed, they’re “courageous individuals” now who “inspire,” not radicals who had a wholly different vision of American society.

Phil Ochs summarized a liberal as “ten degrees to the left of center in good times, ten degrees to the right of center if it affects them personally.”

banneryear1868, to memes in Neoliberals

In the new neoliberal era, then, success would be reframed as a product of having exceptional individual qualities (rather than exceptional social privileges and advantages), while failure would be rooted in some kind of personal deficit (rather than in lack of opportunity, equality, or social support).

In a way it developed out of the pressures against any sort of class based notion’s of analysis, because of the extreme anti-communism that was enforced through the academy and US-based political institutions. These were common approaches in the generation previous, MLK Jr. could represent that era as he argued for class policies as a Christian socialist, and you had labor organization and demonstrations like the March on Washington For Jobs and Freedom. Neoliberalism was the capitalist economic structure’s answer to these threats, allowing for the structure to be retained and enhanced (inequality is more extreme than ever before), while making sure people as individuals are the subjects and not any notion of a group of people with common interests that may exert influence.

I like how computer textbooks organize general concepts, similar to what I got out of formal education.

Linux admin course: Install Gentoo

Really just start by installing a distro you’re interested in, learn how to set up a grid of terminals as your desktop background, then get in to doing any task you would normally through the terminal. What got me first interested in using linux years ago was the way you could make it look cool and messing around with different desktop environments, and I ended up being a unix admin for over a decade and run it at home wherever possible. I’d definitely do the self-exploration route, just find cool things you want to do on linux as inspiration and go for it. The great thing about linux is you can personalize it so it embodies whatever you love most about computers.

If you’re doing this for potential career that’s different, you’ll want to learn more about managing daemons and security groups, disk provisioning, configuring services like httpd ssh autofs etc. Then get in to things like ansible and remote config/monitoring. At least from my experience, it’s gonna depend on the employer. Kubernetes and enterprise containerized app solutions is what I’d be learning if I was about to enter the field again.

It’s basically fat sugar and stabilizers yumm

banneryear1868, to linuxmemes in You have no power here

It’s nice you could just solder in new components.

Tru64 and SunOS are furthest I go back I think, Commodore KERNAL/BASIC technically.

Obscure OS you could actually run today could be Solaris…

banneryear1868, to memes in Why do I need a leather fetish to edit photos?

Not personally but it’s been done with mixed results. Usually the application on it’s own is stable but doesn’t work with plugins and who knows about it’s integration with USB control and MIDI devices. Depending on your setup latency can be a significant issue and vm can introduce quite a lot. Reaper is my DAW of choice for Linux but Ableton Live is what I enjoy most and make the best stuff in. I don’t need a powerful machine for what I do with it though so an old laptop has always sufficed, which works out anyway because I don’t care as much if it gets damaged or stolen etc. Just wish I could be a full time linuxbro :(

banneryear1868, to memes in Why do I need a leather fetish to edit photos?

Ableton Live forces me to still use Windows on a machine :(

Isn’t Affinity more an Illustrator alternative since it’s vector?
