the problem will get so bad that I will feel the terror of catastrophic failure if I don’t deal with it, at which point my fight or flight instincts will kick in and I will have the motivation to actually deal with it.
That episode is probably my favourite episode of Voyager so far (but I’m not very far into it yet). The idea of the culture shock that would come to a whole society when they find out all at once that death is a real thing is fucking crazy and they cover it really well.
That’s a big part of the difference. Cats in the old world are probably fine since everything there has evolved alongside them. But the native species in the Americas haven’t had housecats to worry about until relatively recently in evolutionary terms.
The door to the back is a portal to the elemental plane of pizza. Employees dip into the back to slay a pizza elemental and harvest its crust whenever they run out of dipping sticks.
I forget which season it’s in, but LD has one of my favourite tidbits of worldbuilding in all of ST. In the episode where they are goofing on the TOS movies, there is a scene where Kayshon busts through a door and shouts “Temba!” before shooting a bad guy. Thereby establishing that the Tamarian “Temba, his arms wide” not only means “take this” in the sense of sharing/offering something to someone, but also means “Take this!” in the sense of an exclamation when attacking someone.
