Gentle reminder to everyone that support for ends in about 90 weeks. Many computers can't upgrade to Win 11 so here are your options:

  1. Continue on Win 10 but with higher security risks.
  2. Buy new and expensive hardware that supports Win11.
  3. Try a beginner friendly distro like . It only takes about two months to acclimate.

Here’s hoping it floods the market with really cheap new and used “old” laptops

Amazon clearly lying about "ownership" on Prime. (lemmy.world)

You all remember just a few weeks ago when Sony ripped away a bunch of movies and TV shows people “owned”? This ad is on Amazon. You can’t “own” it on Prime. You can just access it until they lose the license. How can they get away with lying like this?

brax,

Probably intentional so they can change the definition of “own”

brax,

The companies have almost successfully re-introduced the very problem that streaming originally solved.

It’s like this dipshits don’t want our money. I’ve always been firm that any content removed from streaming services is a message from that content company that they don’t want the money of the customers subscribed to said service and thus are okay with those people pirating it instead.

If they cared about the money, they’d had left the content there.

brax,

Hilariously, I’d never heard of any of this stuff until this company decided to Streisand the fuck out of themselves.

And the best part is that they went after the container instead of the content, so all they did was make their problem even worse…

brax,

The Streisand effect of this all is great. I can’t be the only one that found out about this app (and the repos) because of the stupid law suit right? Amazing that they went after the container instead of the contents.

Can’t wait for Glad or Rubbermaid to be C&D’d when the cops find contraband in one of their bags/bins.

brax,

I don’t see an issue with a “super” key. But what would a copilot key bring that’s of any value? The super key already does everything you’d need.

brax, (edited )

We have so many unused potential binds already, though. Knowing the way tech goes these days, they’ll find a way to hard-code the key to one macro and that’s it lol

brax,

“Sony is having trouble with their projectors”

Why not call it out for the bullshit that it is? “Sorry, but greedy bullshit capitalism has failed you as a customer. The lockouts they’ve put on their media to punish the honest users is doing its job once again to punish you. We sure hope this doesn’t lead you to find alternative ways to enjoy media without all of the DRM lockouts and garbage to punish you.”

brax,

So Sony sold them projectors, locked down their media, and then forces theatres to buy new projectors every x number of years to keep up with DRM? Sounds like a lot of unnecessary waste…

brax,

sudo synaptic for a graphical package manager.

Otherwise, just use sudo apt-get if the program you want isn’t there, you may need to download the source and compile it yourself

brax,

I hate all three. Why do we need to the same dependencies in a thousand different places? There’s gotta be something better between typical software repos and these stupid packed applications.

brax,

All the shit I hate about windows packed into a Linux environment… I guess maybe it will help Windows users switch over?

Is Ubuntu deserving the hate? (lemmy.ml)

Long story short, I have a desktop with Fedora, lovely, fast, sleek and surprisingly reliable for a near rolling distro (it failed me only once back around Fedora 34 or something where it nuked Grub). Tried to install on a 2012 i7 MacBook Air… what a slog!!! Surprisingly Ubuntu runs very smooth on it. I have been bothering all...

brax, (edited )

I don’t mind it, but I don’t really use it for any of its features. I use i3 over Unity, I think Snaps (and flatpaks, appimages, etc) are dumb as shit.l, and don’t even get me started on how garbage Nautilus is - drives me nuts trying to type a filename in to jump to it only to have Nautilus run a search instead… No idea who thought that was a good idea, but they need to fix that crap already.

I’d probably get by just fine with a full Debian setup tbh.

brax,

Some songs get completely yanked. You can list them, you can scrape them with the Spotify API. And you can see the available countries is empty.

It's funny how google pretends the music on YouTube isn't straight up piracy and everyone just goes along with it

Most people have extremely weird ideas of what’s considered piracy and what isn’t. Downloading a video game rom is piracy, but if you pay money to some Chinese retailer for an SD card containing the roms, that’s somehow not piracy. Exploiting the free trial on a streaming site by using prepaid visa cards is somehow not...

brax,

That’s the thing that drives me fucking nuts. Use 10 seconds of a song in your 10 minute video, and they get all the money for your work. They should get whatever the percent of your video is that their song occupies at best. If you’re talking/acting over top of their music, then you’re splitting that percentage in half.

brax,

That, but also the splash buff of Proton making a lot of games work for Linux outside of Steam Decks has probably helped too.

brax,

A delicious canned energy drink from the 90s.

brax,

Seedbox

I’ve admitted kinda taken a backseat to piracy for the last while, and I’ve seen this term come up a ton. Is it just a remote server that you download all of your shit on?

brax,

I used to subscribe to streaming services but then they took all their content that I used to watch off - either to move to another streaming service or just “gone forever”.

If they don’t want the money I was giving them, why do they give a fuck if I pirate it? I tried to do things right and they told me they didn’t want my money.

brax,

Lmao, they can have fun with that. I can’t imagine it being anything decent. A mobile phone equivalent of a DVD Player OS lol

brax,

I’m honoured lol

brax,

My laptop went bonkers trying to run it, maybe I have something misconfigured somewhere. I wanted to like it because it looks great, but I couldn’t because it was seemingly too resource intensive.

brax,

I tried btop. It slowed my computer way the fuck down, so I went back to htop

brax,

Your link to “Piped” doesn’t work for me on mobile. I think you accidentally put some asterisks at the start of it.
