haui_lemmy,

Probably an idea as old as time but wouldn’t it work to stream adobe products from a terminal server?

Let me elaborate: two major fronts I’ve seen are “I type data and write emails” types that can easily work on the terminal and “I make heave graphics and video editing and cant work without 4090 gpu” which we usually just leave to it.

Obviously there are more nuances but most should be doable in terminal unless no internet or very bad internet. I’m somewhat hopeful this would work. Everyone has a very efficient linux pc/laptop and the heavy lifting is done by windows vms with adobe suite running on shared A100s. And while they are not used they could be rented out for extra cost efficiency.

haui_lemmy,

Thanks. Thats actually very interesting. Do you know if there is a good open alternative at this point?

haui_lemmy,

Thanks for mentioning it. I had forgotten it exists since I barely use word processors atm.

haui_lemmy,

On another note: why do we have open standards like jpeg and png but proprietary shit like docx?

haui_lemmy,

Ubuntu is what got me hooked to linux. By now I’m ready to jump ship and maybe use debian in the future.

haui_lemmy,

And obviously, every entity, company or person, sould be capped at owning things (including other companies) at $ 999 mil.

haui_lemmy,

Why would it be sarcasm?

haui_lemmy,

Thats neat. I was searching for something like this. Goes on my list.

haui_lemmy, (edited )

Imo, yes.

  • only run containers from trusted sources (btw. google, ms, apple have proven they cant be trusted either)
  • run apps without dependency hell
  • even if someone breaks in, they’re not in your system but in a container
  • have everything web facing separate from the rest
  • get per app resource statistics

Those are just what was in my head. Probably more to be said.

haui_lemmy,

I havent actually tried that. Might need to check it out. :)

haui_lemmy,

*in that container, not in the system

haui_lemmy,

Neat explanation. Thanks. I also modded some communities over there.

It’s not only reddit i‘m seeing this happen on. At work, on discord, people with questionable morals start to get into power and take over from those who built stuff up.

It’s like we have an epidemic of the dark triad. Being manipulative, impulsive and brutal seems to get more and more normalized through our economic system.

haui_lemmy,

Yes, I agree on most points, especially comparing the different populists/fascists.

But radio was new, as is the internet and now we have a word for this behavior. Psychology shows us why people like musk rise to power.

Instead of taking away voting rights from people we deem „too stupid“, we should hospitalize people without a moral compass like we should do with serial killers to be instead of sending them to the electric chair afterward (or prison for life in europe)

If someone shows parts of the dark triad, they should be barred from any office that has any power over any other human being.

Are they great strategists? Yes! Are they unable and/or unwilling to empathise with their victims? Also yes.

Give them strategy work but dont let them take care of people. Its not that hard.

What's your experiences with Debian and Rocky as a homeserver OS? (external-content.duckduckgo.com)

Hello there lemmings! Finally I have taken up the courage to buy a low power mini PC to be my first homeserver (Ryzen 5500U, 16GB RAM, 512 SSD, already have 6TB external HDD tho). I have basically no tangible experience with Debian or Fedora-based system, since my daily drivers are Arch-based (although I’m planning to switch...

haui_lemmy,

Hi! Here’s you, like 2 yrs down the road. I have no opinion on the server OS since I started with ubuntu server but my projects went a similar direction.

One major thing I’d recommend is thinking about security: web facing servers with your private data on it are a very bad idea. So unless you mean a website for personal use, I’d split the “home” server and the “personal web server” or vps in two so you have the stuff you want others to use unsupervised and the stuff you use at home and from the road.

Another thought is bandwith, unless you have insane upload, I’d stay away from web facing stuff like websites, game servers and social media instances. This works on a cheap vps with gigabit bandwith up and down. Way less hassle and less security issues.

haui_lemmy,

Its disgusting, really. It‘s also part of our daily lives. Having a great idea or great skills isnt enough, unless they are part of the dark triad. People with those skills will always eat your lunch - for free.

We need to pathologize these behaviors instead of normalizing them.

haui_lemmy,

Good bye troll

haui_lemmy,

Original facebook/whatsapp look at me I’m so original! and people upvote it. Do we have another bot problem now?

haui_lemmy,

I agree. We‘re making an ND wiki too so that would be something to go over in detail soon. Thanks for pointing it out.

haui_lemmy,

Correct! They‘re great communities and I will link them in the sidebar soon. This community is focused on the unification of NDs rather than individual conditions.

There is a similar community on a big lemmy clone (I‘m joking, you know who I‘m talking about I hope) but I figured I‘d just do something. If they want to join the fediverse, I‘m glad.

Logs are getting spammed with stacktraces "WARN Error encountered while processing the incoming HTTP request: lemmy_server::root_span_builder: Unknown:"

My lemmy-ui container is spiking cpu usage and looking into the logs the following shows up (900.000 lines in total). Any ideas what the issue could be? I’m on 0.19.1, everything seems to be working fine aside from the logs filling up and the usage piking sometimes....

haui_lemmy,

Okay! Thank you! Will do.

haui_lemmy,

no, just that I’ve read that it is discouraged to put the compose files to “latest” so they get updated periodically. I updated a day or two before 0.19.2 came out I believe.

haui_lemmy,

Same here. Got me deeper into tech before I started with linux. I was still a windows addict when he did the linux daily driver challenge.

I‘m really sad he‘s just one of them after all…

Suddenly getting a server error on my instance

I don’t know when it started, I usually check my instance through the Voyager app and it never showed a problem, but I’m suddenly getting “server error” and 502 bad gateway errors on my instance on desktop. I haven’t made any major changes (read, any at all) since I last confirmed it worked on desktop....

haui_lemmy,

I would start at the github repo and check if that issue has been documented.

If yes, follow the instructions. If not, check your dns since 502 often came from dns in my case.

If both doesnt reveal anything, you could open an issue in the repo and post your (sanitized) logs and wait for answers.

The error suggests a problem with the lemmy-lemmy-ui-1 container. Maybe it needs an update or has pulled a wrong update. When did you update last? Did you try restarting the stack?

Good luck.

haui_lemmy,

Thats insanely valuable info, neatly packaged.
