I think we fixed that for someone a few months ago, maybe you can scroll back and find it. I think the guys handle was user-something, might have been around May…

Never seen any cat that chose to stay inside even 50% of the time when given a choice. I’d rather they enjoy their life than make me feel better be cause they’re penned up all the time.

VS Code in Home Assistant: any use for this outside of editing yaml files?

I don’t see that there’s any sort of integration for writing code to process information from HA entities like Node Red + Companion. Am I missing something and this is more than just an interface for the config files and maybe a git client for those config files?

I’m just going to say, I shit on them all along. ARM is relatively expensive, bespoke and difficult to compile for because of that. Anyone can puke out a binary for amd64 that works everywhere. And way, way faster than some sad little SOC. Especially weird is spending $1000 on a clusterboard with CMs that had half of the power of a 5 year old X86 SFF desktop you could pick up for $75 and attach some actual storage to.

Maybe RISC-V will change all that, but I doubt it. Sure hope so though. The price factor has already leaned the right way to make it worthwhile.

Buy 2 seats, 1 behind the other, for $550 then walk in there with a toolbox and yeet that seat out through the emergency door onto the tarmac. You get more than a few inches and it only cost twice as much.

Don’t forget ads.

I’d happily pay for anything I consume if it were convenient, private, and no ads. Since I can’t get that anymore, well, it’s the high seas for me. I pay as much for high seas related services as I would for the official streamers, but the experience is 10x better.

Oh, Robert, there’s some lovely filth over here…

Anyone seen or built an alternative to the M5Stack Atom Echo for HA voice pipeline?

These things aren’t bad, I’ve got a few that I use sort of successfully, but the speaker and mic aren’t very powerful. I was thinking of building one with an ESP32 and i2S (not i2c, that threw me off too) speaker/mic, but I’m wondering if I’d be reinventing the wheel here if there’s a better alternative already out...

Open office is a dead project, avoid at all costs. LibreOffice or OnlyOffice are active.

Debian doesn’t even come with sudo, git or curl by default. It’s kind of minimal on purpose.

That’s less about Wayland than it is about shortfalls in nVidia driver development. Exactly like Nate’s example in the blog post.

Wayland has fixed so many head-scratching issues I would get running 6 monitors on 2 GPUs under X11. I’d often end up with missing monitors, placed in wrong spots that I’d have to rearrange every reboot until an update would come through that would fix it again for a few months, then all over again.

Since I moved to wayland, everything just works. When it doesn’t, it’s not a display server issue, it’s something physical. I just had a couple monitors fail to show up and thought “oh hell, it’s back to this, eh”. But I open the tower, seat the offending GPU better, and everything comes up like normal, and all the screens are in the right position, it just remembers.

Anyone that thinks X11 is still superior probably runs on a laptop with a single screen.

I’d probably double that menu to include coffee.

No cream.

No sugar.

Take your coffee and grilled cheese sandwich and fuck off over thereabouts

I’m well over 25 years of sailing now (40 if you count games for early PCs), and they’ll pry the sabre out of my cold, dead hands. I’ve made not watching ads a lifestyle and piracy is so much easier than dealing with the bullshit interfaces of streaming companies.

If I have a way of directly donating to creators and not via their shitty production companies, I’ll take it. Podcasts have it right, I can send money to creators and get an ad-free stream. If I can’t, I don’t donate and I don’t listen to their work.

In the end, me avoiding ads isn’t costing anyone anything, because if I hear an ad, I likely avoid that product going forward. They have at best zero effect on my buying decisions, if not a negative one.

So every person I see talking like this seems to do it at twice the volume than if they put it to their ear, and then you get the added bonus of listening to the other idiot on the call as well, again, at twice the volume that it needs to be.

It seems more like performative art than a phone call at that point.
