Because mental health requires certain conditions, and one of those conditions is each phase of life playing in the correct order.

Sexual interaction with a child screws up their development, because they try to absorb the state of mind of the adult but they can’t because there’s nowhere to put it. So they pantomime it, and it stops them from interacting with the things appropriate to their age. They stop developing, because their energy goes into maintaining this mask.

The things they don’t develop include boundaries, a sense of self, the ability to trust other people, and any opportunity at developing a healthy, normal relationship with sex when they grow up.

It’s somewhat similar to what happens to a child when they are burdened with emotionally caring for their parents. Except it’s more intense, with older parts of the nervous system getting mis-developed.

Think like a baby in a small metal box. As the baby grows, if the box stays there, the growth of his body will be stunted and fucked up. And it’s not like removing the box later allows him to pop into a normal shape. His physical development is ruined. It won’t get back on track.

Sexual interaction with a child is like this metal box, except it’s a behavioral box. It’s a mask. The kid is participating in something he or she doesn’t have the mental configuration to engage with properly. But children absorb patterns from adults around them, and so they take on this pattern, and it’s the wrong pattern for that time in their life, and like the metal box around the baby, it fucks up their mental and emotional development.

intensely_human,

I think combat drones will go full autonomous this year, as a means of overcoming control signal jamming.

It will be limited-mission autonomy, and only as a capability not the default operational mode, but there will be a huge push to make the newest drones capable of continue the mission in the event of lost connection with their remote controller.

It will also be necessary because of the sheer numbers of drones involved in the Ukraine war. There simply won’t be enough pilots.

Obviously, autonomy already exists. Iron Dome operates autonomously, because attackers have the initiative, the robot is required for fast-enough response.

If a person is too tired to vote that means resting is more important to them than voting. Forcing that person to vote is invalidating their own prioritization.

Disclosure: I don’t have an econ degree either

I don’t think that mechanism you’re referring to automatically finds its new equilibrium right back where you started.

Let’s take rent for instance. All the current renters in lowest income bracket now have $1000/mo more to spend.

Next income bracket up now has $800 more to spend. Not because the UBI is varying, but because the tax people are paying into the UBI is varying. So this next bracket up is putting $200 into it as taxes and getting their $1000 check. At a certain point, there are the people who break even. And above that, people are paying more into the system than they’re getting back. That’s worth mentioning.

But focusing on this lowest income bracket as if it’s a little segmented, separate economy. Like a slice, to analyze it.

Town with 100 people. Let’s say there’s 105 units of housing, making for a teeny bit of pressure on landlords via competition. The landlords live elsewhere; ultra simple model here. Each of the 100 people gets $1000 more to spend. Fuck it, all they’re spending it on is rent. It’s the only thing they have to buy.

Well, there’s still competition between the landlords. If a landlord’s got an empty unit, he can offer it for $200 less than the other guy and get a tenant in there. Excess supply is good for consumer negotiating power.

But also, let’s say all units just go up by $1000/mo, and swallow up the UBI.

Then other developers now have a new equation in terms of the costs and benefits of building new housing.

Maybe now that you can charge $1500 for an apartment instead of $500, it’s worth it to build a new apartment building. It’s become more profitable.

So someone builds a new apartment building, and there’s 120 housing units for those 100 renters. Now you’ve got 20 desperate landlords (or one landlord with 20 un-rented units) willing to take say $1000 instead of $1500.

That pushes the price of rent back down.

Of course it doesn’t actually sway wildly like this. Every player thinks ahead about all the moves that can be made.

Like if your apartment building is profitable at $1500 but not at $500, what’s the cutoff? Maybe if rents drop below $1200 your new apartment building is going to lose money.

There’s some equilibrium point, and that’s what the market price settles into, as people finding themselves far from that point find it profitable to move toward it. (You make more money renting out five units at $1000 than you make renting out two units at $1500 - lowering the price is profitable here).

So now to crack this model open again, what is this “other place” where these landlords are coming from to invest new money in housing?

That’s where we bring in the higher income tiers, the ones who pay more into UBI than they receive out. The money is coming from up there. In those places, the people have less money than they did before, and so it is becoming less profitable to fulfill their needs. Maybe the amount you can get for a luxury apartment in manhattan drops from $50k to $49k per month.

Ultimately, resources used to fulfill demands, get slowly and steadily re-allocated to serve money’s new center of gravity, which is slightly lower than before.

Prices go up for poor people goods, but not enough to eat all the income. And the new amount of money flowing improves the offering, even at the same price levels, by bringing more investment overall into those industries.

intensely_human,

There’s got to be some kind of Vice Putin isn’t there? A guy who can step in and rule with an iron fist and keep things running? Or is this just some kind of jackal feeding frenzy sort of situation when he dies?

intensely_human,

I have this problem with the board game Go.

It has a perfect handicap system, and the game sucks if you don’t use the correct handicap, but I simply can’t get people to play me with a handicap because they think it’s shameful. They want to play me without a handicap, then I mop the floor with them.

But we can have a really good game that’s really engaging if we use a handicap.

Our biggest environmental worry was landfills growing to cover the entire planet. We were all convinced this was our fate and that we had to recycle everything mainly to protect ourselves from having to live on ever-expanding waste dumps.

What are some productive things to do when you wake up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep for a few hours?

I’m looking for suggestions that zombie-me could follow through with. The problem is I can barely bring myself to get out of bed, let alone do a useful task. It just wastes typically 2–5 hours of my life as I wait for tiredness to finally (re)take hold.

intensely_human,

Meditation doesn’t require you to leave your bed, and the only way you could fail at it is by falling asleep again.

intensely_human,

I’ve been working retail for the past year and I have gotten so much less reactive.

It’s really hard to toe the line between allowing disrespect, and being disrespectful myself.

One of my main goals for myself right now is to be able to hold my boundaries without getting loud and unpleasant. Just quietly, gently.

If homeless people go to prison in this country, why have I never seen one arrested? Why are they … not in prison but rather sleeping on the street?

I’m not sure what you’re trying to claim here, as what you’re claiming is obviously false based on my day to day experience in the US

intensely_human,

Mine thinks “human” should be spelled “juman” and that “.com” is supposed to be “.con”.

It’s ridiculous

We’re all about the transparency over here in the States. We believe in the free flow of information.

It’s got to be true and uplifting.

One of the most effective for me has been “I can make my life a little better today”.

I just keep repeating that when I have nothing in the tank, and it helps me find a little more.

Why wasn't NYC's Central Park concept copied by other cities?

I’m talking about a massive park in the absolute heart of the city. Located such that is naturally surrounded by city high rises. *People are giving examples of parks that are way off in the boonies. I’m trying to say located centrally, heart of the city, you know where the high rises are. Yes I understand nyc has more, the...

intensely_human,

Nobody said you wanted to use it that way. OP’s probably referring to the lack of parks in Manhattan.
