to the point of being denied service

Yes. Spotify blocks my account if I’m using VPN, ChatGPT asks to solve ridiculous captchas (on a paid account!). It’s crazy. Reddit blocks access if you’re on the VPN and not logged in.

good battery life (I don’t want to worry about)

Define good battery life.

Gentoo goes Binary (packages) (www.gentoo.org)

To speed up working with slow hardware and for overall convenience, we’re now also offering binary packages for download and direct installation! For most architectures, this is limited to the core system and weekly updates - not so for amd64 and arm64 however. There we’ve got a stunning >20 GByte of packages on our mirrors,...

java,

But why? Isn’t building from sources the whole point of Gentoo?

Is Ubuntu deserving the hate? (lemmy.ml)

Long story short, I have a desktop with Fedora, lovely, fast, sleek and surprisingly reliable for a near rolling distro (it failed me only once back around Fedora 34 or something where it nuked Grub). Tried to install on a 2012 i7 MacBook Air… what a slog!!! Surprisingly Ubuntu runs very smooth on it. I have been bothering all...

java,

Use whatever you want, why do you care about what feelings other people have towards Ubuntu?

java,

Why are there supported tags? Why can’t be parsed by the bot? I don’t expect many people to make the effort to check which tags are allowed.

Why should a Lemmy user care about this? It appears there is no integration with Lemmy beyond parsing. For instance, you can’t quickly filter by tags from the sidebar.

I suppose it’s still useful since the tag is added automatically. However, the overall idea feels rather raw.

rutracker.org, e.g. rutracker.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3494796

The interface is in Russian, but it’s not that hard to translate a couple of words to navigate. Apparently, you don’t even have to be registered to download anymore.

I can’t bother joining a private tracker. Of course, they might be useful for niche content. For instance, 15 years ago there was a special tracker, where people shared races of virtually all racing series. But mainstream stuff is available on public trackers.

There one tracker where I download lossless music. But anyone can join it, I guess you could define it as semi-private or semi-public.

Linux, the kernel, doesn’t operate in isolation. The system under test was Ubuntu, which comes with specific packages, package versions, patches, kernel configuration, and so on. It is reasonable to say that the combination between this specific operating system and hardware led to the observed outcome. Different combinations of software and hardware may yield other results or replicate the same outcome. The certainty of these outcomes can only be established through testing. Therefore, your outrage seems unwarranted, and your assertion is not only baseless but incorrect.

Proton Mail CEO Calls New Address Verification Feature 'Blockchain in a Very Pure Form' (tech.slashdot.org)

Proton Mail, the leading privacy-focused email service, is making its first foray into blockchain technology with Key Transparency, which will allow users to verify email addresses. From a report: In an interview with Fortune, CEO and founder Andy Yen made clear that although the new feature uses blockchain, the key technology...

Do you have valid arguments against this proposal or is it just an emotional reaction caused by a single word?

java,

There is no need to have an account for that. This is a purely artificial measure.

“It’s not paid, you can pay by watching ads and get a laughable amount of downloads per day for free!”

Sometimes you have to cycle through many subtitles to find the right one. They don’t even produce them.

In the era of VPN, many users share the same IP too. You can reach the limit before downloading anything.

Especially if you have as much money as this dude claims to have.

I mean, this is on 4chan. Regardless of whether this is true or not, the post is blatantly narcissistic. I don’t know why it should be here and what’s there to discuss.

java,

You don’t need that, just stop using those apps… don’t install games or use your smartphone for gaming or social stuff.

It’s akin to telling a depressed person: ‘just be happy.’ If they could be happy, they wouldn’t be depressed. The same holds true for these apps. While some individuals can quit them, for many of us, the temptation of cheap pleasure outweighs rational arguments. Maybe not immediately, but over time when the initial motivation fades. We have limited control over these impulses. That’s why creating conditions where such temptations are absent can be very helpful.

How about answering the question that was asked:

How do companies know if I use cracked software or assets for my personal gig?

Issue with Samsung Odyssey G3 and squashed windows after a period of inactivity (i.imgur.com)

I have two screens, one of them is Samsung Odyssey G3. This model has some sort of “deep sleep”, it takes more time to wake one up after a period of inactivity (i.e. AFK). As a result, all windows that are placed on this screen are squashed. See the attached screenshot....

java,

Define “we”. I don’t know anyone doing that, bar impulsive people on social media.

java,

How does this support manifest? I’m asking, because there are no real signs. Russian army is struggling to find soldiers and Putin is afraid to start another wave of mass-mobilization.

If somebody echoes propaganda, it doesn’t mean that they support anything. There are no actions confirming this support.

There are many more nuances. I suggest reading at least one book on yhe topic of political science and listening to some lectures before coming to conclusions on such a complex matters.

Is ProtonVPN worth it?

@piracy

Got reminded of this while reading about ProtonMail. The reason I haven't gotten into proper is that I don't have a VPN for torrenting, and the reason I don't have a VPN is that I don't . So it would be nice if I got a good VPN while myself.

Will ProtonVPN rat me out to Comcast? I know some VPNs don't hide what you're downloading from your ISP, for reasons I don't fully understand.

java,

From what I’ve heard ProtonVPN isn’t really recommended.

Why? You can’t attack something like that. At least say what you’ve heard.

Does usage of third party youtube apps necessitate a VPN in the near future?

Greetings y’all. I’ve been using ways to circumvent YouTube ads for years now. I’d much rather donate to creators directly instead of using Google as a middle man, needing YouTube Premium. If even pay for premium for just a add free version, if the price wouldn’t be so outrageous. I’ve So far used adblockers, Vanced...

java,

I don’t see them blocking accounts. What would it achieve? Their goal is to monetize you. By taking you out of the equation, they can’t monetize you anymore. You’ll probably keep doing what you were doing anonymously or with a new account, so blocking you won’t reduce costs either.

On the other hand, Google is collecting a lot of data. Maybe now they aren’t using it very effectively, but sooner or later they might find a key to make YouTube Premium a viable option even for someone like you. By using YouTube and other Google services, you are providing key fragments.

I know this is not how dbzer0 works, but can you help me get cs 1.6 working on my linux system ? (lemmy.dbzer0.com)

I downloaded the game from soft32 (this file used to work on the old days). I installed both WINE and Lutris, but the game runs like sh**t. I get .NET and Vulkan errors from Lutris&WINE. Can you give me a newbie friendly guide for the right way? I’m tired of scrapping the web and it doesn’t help that I have limited data....

Well, the OP is not trying to play CSGO.
