Is there any new p2p/decentral technology that is trying to advance beyond federation?

It would be cool to have a generic framework to make web resources that are inherently decentralized without the need for sponsor and hosting.

Like IPFS but as a social site. Everyone helps partially host content in exchange for access to all the content.

Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) which lets you basically run linux kernel along side the windows kernel which lets you do a lot of cool stuff like containers, linux apps, whole DEs, etc.

It was pretty cool for like 5 minutes until people realized that keeping windows around was kind of pointless and we should just be running pure linux lol.

It’s still a good feature, but it just gives you a direct comparison of linux vs windows which tends to outshine windows.

What's (are) the funniest/stupidest way(s) you've broken your linux setup?

Tinkering is all fun and games, until it’s 4 am, your vision is blurry, and thinking straight becomes a non-option, or perhaps you just get overly confident, type something and press enter before considering the consequences of the command you’re about to execute… And then all you have is a kernel panic and one thought...

fstab bind mount for /home that I misspelled, so I couldn’t login as myself.

fstab external hdd mount that didn’t have ignore flag so PC would pop if I booted while unplugged

Accidentally booting windows after a year and it overwrite my EFI boot entry.

The best I’ve see however was an acquaintance who accidentally set perms to own user on /usr/bin

So everything went from root:root to user:user which removed all the SUID/SGID bits as well so a bunch of bins broke lol.

Believe it or not, it was actually fairly easy to fix with chmod and chown

This reminds me of how when reddit closed their API, a select few just went to web scraping it instead lol.

"Must Try" distros and DEs?

Hey folks! I’m getting a fresh laptop for the first time in about a decade (Framework 16) in a couple of months and am looking forward to doing some low-level tinkering both on the OS and hardware. I’m planning to convert into a “cyberdeck” with quick-release hinges for the screen since I usually use an HMD, built-in...

XFCE with Compiz as the compositor

Or just straight Compiz

Make sure you enable all the funny effects like the cube, cube animations, 3D windows, advanced window animations, transparency effects, sky box, etc.

All easy to do with compiz config manager.

I’m really hoping this all forces Ubuntu out as the face of desktop Linux.

It’s been pretty low tier for years now, and Canonical just proves corporate backing doesn’t guarantee a good distro.

Snap is pretty garbage, default GNOME is horrendous, the repos break every other month, apt is still pretty lame despite being an user upgrade for apt-get, the packages are neither stable nor cutting edge, they change core OS backends like every update which breaks configs and makes documentation obsolete.

I’d like to suggest Fedora as the new goto, but I feel like it’s a bit too privacy and FOSS oriented which may scare away new users.

Debian is great but it doesn’t have latest packages which isn’t optimal as performance upgrades would take time to release or need to be manually installed.

Flatpak packages still suck at integration without breaking something in the core app. They’re really great for bleeding edge and cross distro support tho.

Wayland still can’t do all the cool tricks X11 can, so it’s not like it’s really being forced upon anyone beyond X11 losing on potential major updates which is unlikely.

DEs are willing to switch to Wayland given that it is either equal or superior to X11 which is still not the case for several scenarios and applications.

This is why Airbus is superior

You know because they actually have real regulations and consequences for not following proper guidelines in the EU

Also because it was made up of former WW2 engineers at the forefront of innovation including Messerschmitt lol. Boeing made big chungus prop bombers, never any jet fighters or even prop fighters. ^/s^

Already mentioned in thread, Anker cables. It has very good threaded covers that are strong and hard to damage. Internal copper cables and the USB ends are also very well made so there is no chance for it to fray or crack.

Bought a pair pack over 6 years ago. Still haven’t used the second cable because the first one is as good as new.

Also NGK spark plugs lol.

CUPS is absolutely amazing compared to windows printer drivers which had whole ass critical CVEs several times already.

Even Apple uses CUPS

Nvidia on Wayland moment

Gaming on wayland moment

Battery/Usage on wayland moment

KDE devs making gestures only available on wayland because memes (there is literally a 3rd party github script to achieve the same thing on X11)

X11 being reliable because Xorg devs aren’t stupid

My real issue with Wayland is that it took like 15 years to become acceptably usable. I’ll switch once XFCE moves over in several years, but until then, there is no incentive for worse performance and non exitestent support.

The DCEU ends not with a bang, but a wimper. (lemmy.ml)

10 years after Zod’s snapped neck, Martha, “some kinda Suicide Squad”, CGI moustache, rennouncing your wish, the hiearchy of power changing, and Speed Force PS1 graphics, the DC Extended Universe finally comes to a close. And it ends the same way it started - with a Rotten score....

mlg,
@mlg@lemmy.world avatar

Looking back at all this wasted potential, what would you have done differently with the DCEU,

  1. Don’t try to cash money imitate MCU
  2. Don’t try to compete in a saturated market with a similar product
  3. Hire actual screenwriters to plan continuity and style

and what are your hopes for James Gunn’s DC Universe?

Don’t try and just go back to animation since DC still dominates in that format.

Pay morbillions to make Batman Arkham Alsume remastered remastered version

Used it for 2 years on desktop and server.

Documentation is always outdated and useless. GNOME is crap. apt has a dependency issue every week. Repos have software ranging from bleeding edge to horrendously outdated. Netplan is next level stupid and also decides to break for no reason. Systemd waits for network to boot by default because reasons. Versioning and LTS adds more magic fun to doing anything because of the aforementioned documentation. Last time I used it, still had crap interoperability when switching DEs for some weird reason. Canonical is the big dumb dumb. All the downstreams inherit the same problems like PopOS and elementary.

I took all of that experience and thought it was the default linux expectations until I got to try Debian for server and Fedora for desktop.

Unfortunately, people make the same mistake as me and then assume broken Ubuntu is just how linux is.

Credit though, it did get to teach me the general ins and outs of linux because I needed to fix or change something every other week.

The swiss army knife should not be Ubuntu lol. Ubuntu would be like the dollar store knockoff that falls apart with use.

This really hurts when you go watch a movie with lots of good reviews, find it not enjoyable or a good movie at all, and then question whether everyone else is stupid or that you are in fact the local idiot.
