redcalcium,

Probably just a permission issue. The doc seems to recommend giving relaxed permission to the temp folder volume:

sudo chmod 777 /your/linguacafe/temp/folder -R

redcalcium,

Youtube can show ads and offers subscription without being this shitty though. Just look on how popular region-specific video services like niconico (japan) or bilibili (china) operate. They also have ads and subscription, but nowhere as crazy as google adding multiple video ads upon ads and pick a fight with ad blocker users (which used to be a minority when google haven’t aggressively pushed more and more ads. the current popularity of adblockers today is google’s own doing). This is only possible because google has killed off competitors in those market and now it’s time for cashing out.

redcalcium,

You might want to try migrating your nextcloud instance to postgres instead of mysql/mariadb. Many people says they get some big performance boost. I’m going to try it myself next weekend to see if it’s true.

Self-hosted VPN that can be accessed via browser extension

Currently I set up Tailscale in my Synology NAS and I can access selfhosted services on my phone using the Android app. I want to use some services in my work PC too but I’m blocked from installing any software. So my question is, is there any solution that allows me to connect to selfhosted VPN via browser extension? (Just...

redcalcium,

Maybe look into deploying a Socks5 proxy (e.g. socks5-server)? Then you can use socks5 browser extensions like FoxyProxy

redcalcium,

What happened when you tried to open it on incognito mode / private browsing mode?

Btw, if you’re using Chrome, you can type thisisunsafe to bypass hsts warning if nothing else work.

redcalcium,

I don’t think you can change your lemmy instance’s domain yet. Afaik there is no official way to do it. FMHY lost their domain (they are using a free domain and lost it) and was attempting to switch to a new domain for their instance and developing a tool to migrate to a new domain, but somehow decided to start fresh and discard their old data instead. No idea what happen with the migration tool they were working on (is it actually working? did they actually released the code?), so save yourself some headache and make sure to never lost your domain, which means don’t use free domain because that domain isn’t actually yours and can be yanked without any notice.

redcalcium,

Have you tried downranking (or even blacklisting) the spammy sites on your Kagi search result? That alone is an improvement over Google.

redcalcium,

There is a possible outgoing federation issue but I haven’t seen it happen myself, so it might be pretty rare: github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/4288

redcalcium,

On Linux, there is no reason to use 3 characters extension as the max path length is 4096 characters, so I’ll just use the most descriptive filename and extension. I can see the need to use the shortest extension possible on windows though with its limited 256 max path length.

redcalcium,

Actually I haven’t been able to get Bluetooth 5 dongles to work on Linux. I only have success with Bluetooth 4 dongles.

What are you going to use the Bluetooth dongle for? Connecting Bluetooth peripherals, or headphones? If it’s exclusively for Bluetooth headphones, using a Bluetooth audio dongle (which is detected as a USB audio device in Linux) works much better than using the Bluetooth 4.0 usb dongle for audio purpose because you can use low latency aptx codex and Bluetooth 5 without messing with random drivers from some github repos

Sometimes I use Steam Remote Play to access my personal linux desktop remotely. It’s actually works pretty great and can automatically reduce stream quality to match your current bandwidth. It also has a lot less input latency than VNC or RDP, though it consumes a lot more bandwidth.

redcalcium,

IIRC AdGuard iOS content filter works on safari a while ago to block youtube ads, but that was before youtube began its war against adblockers. Haven’t tested it again yet.

redcalcium,

The key differences here is “inviting” vs “paying”.

redcalcium,

VLC usually can handle everything you throw at it. The other popular and capable media player is MPV, though it’s not as user friendly as VLC but has tons of advanced features.

redcalcium,

Can you write your own kernel module for your WiFi card without sneaking into Broadcom headquarter to stole the internal product documentation?

Wait, so the benchmarks mostly contradict claims that bcachefs is almost as fast as ext4 except in application startup time? What kind of test performed for that application startup time benchmark?

redcalcium,

CoD players won’t play another games because there’s not enough storage left to install another games? Sounds like what Activision would do.

redcalcium,

Before Wikipedia default to https, I remember being surprised seeing ads in a Wikipedia page. I was so disappointed that Wikipedia has stoop so low before eventually realizing my cursed ISP was the real culprit.

redcalcium,

Also, if jizz is not spelled as gizz, so why would jif spelled as gif?
