Apple is so notorious at doing this, it’s not even funny anymore. The article didn’t mention these two famous sherlocking cases though:

It’s still one of the top posts on !piracy: lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/35555?scrollToComments=true . r/piracy went downhill soon after this.

redcalcium, (edited )

It’s unprecedented at the time because he was the top mod so the only one that can remove him was Reddit admins, and they did. r/piracy fell into a complete chaos shortly after that, lots of awful stuff so I didn’t stay long to see how it went.

redcalcium,

It’s an issue that could be solved within lemmy where communities with the same name should be able to merge and show each others content.

This is bad idea though, unless if it’s an optional feature that the users themselves choose to activate (e.g similar to multireddit, but you don’t have to manually curate the communities yourself). Imagine the same community from two opposing instances (e.g. blahaj and hexbear) somehow got merged by default. That would be an absolute shitshow. Also, how would moderation work? Those communities often have different moderation rule. Can mods from one community remove posts from another community with the same name? This would also be an absolute shitshow.

redcalcium,

Me with my Windows 2000 😏

The version number will be incremented when Linus says so. He might even increment it to 7.x tomorrow if he feels like it.

redcalcium,

That’s basically it. It guarantees you can always access your computer remotely, even if you broke your ssh, or accidentally messed up your network config, or can’t boot due to filesystem corruption and need to run fsck from recovery mode.

mischief maker

No kidding, this mickey fella seems like a dick and animal abusers, and this is actually the censored version too, which means the original is even more brutal (I think they removed the part where mickey kicks the baby pigs).

Me vs my ISP

So I was looking into getting port forwarding set up and I realized just how closed-off the internet has gotten since the early days. It’s concerning. It used to be you would buy your own router and connect it to the internet, and that router would control port-forwarding and what-have-you....

redcalcium,

The US and other western countries don’t really feel the pressure of IPv4 scarcity yet. ISPs in other countries typically uses CGNAT or IPv6. Some even give you a routable IPv4 but may randomly replaced it with an ip behind their CGNAT when the lease is expired, giving you false sense of hope.

What would be the best way for me to recover data from my old laptop's hard drive, which seems to have a bad superblock?

I got an external hard drive enclosure for the purpose of recovering some of the files from my old laptops hard drive. The hard drive and all of it’s partitions show up in both disks and gparted but it wont mount. When I tried to mount it manually, it gave the error message stating that it can’t read the superblock. I’ve...

redcalcium,

You can decide yourself if the data in that disk is more valuable than the price of a new disk to store the backup image. If it’s not that valuable I guess you can one-shot it.

redcalcium,

Search engines funded by ads have this perverse incentive to not give you the best possible results (or at least stop trying so hard to improve their results) so you search more (and thus served more ads). This may not be true for the underdogs (because they’re trying to gain marketshare) but seems to be especially true for Google.

redcalcium,

Lemmy’s current donation drive is almost reaching 1/3 of their recurring donation goal. If the goal is reached, they’ll be able to fund three full time developers. I encourage anyone who can spare ~$10/mo to check the donation page: join-lemmy.org/donate

Recently I moved my instance to a cheaper host and use the money I saved for recurring donation to Lemmy. Heck, I probably should host it on my closet for free and donate the money used for renting the VPS but my HDD is so loud it drove me crazy, it’s clicking non-stop when I host a Lemmy instance there

redcalcium,

Microsoft offers to buy out AppGet and had its developer join them, but then ghost him once they realized the dev is also Sonarr dev.

redcalcium, (edited )

They can still show Tom Cruise flirting and leading the girl to a room, just don’t show the actual fucking. You know, like what old movies usually do to imply sex happened. Showing the actual sex is just makes it awkward when watching with friends and family and totally unnecessary for most shows unless the entire point of the show is about sex.

redcalcium, (edited )

Those scenes can usually be replaced with a black screen and the plot won’t be affected at all. On the other hand, violence scene usually still affect the plot though some scenes are unnecessarily violent.

redcalcium,

Fucking up ads with an ad blocker?! Noooo! If you don’t like ads, then you should pay for the subscription to get rid of the ads!

redcalcium,

Don’t use the official Reddit app. Instead, grab the last release apk of Sync for Reddit from apkmirror, then use revanced manager to patch it with your own api key (and probably patched out the ads while you’re at it).

See this guide for more info.

You made your KDE desktop to look like Gnome with widgets?! WTF?! I thought it was gnome at the first glance.

redcalcium,

Here I am admiring how the AI finally get the fingers look right until I noticed the extra arm.

redcalcium,

No amount of funding will make native desktop icon happen if the devs simply don’t want to implement then.

US in that time period is pretty wild! They have:

  • restaurants where you dine in your parked car
  • movie theaters where you watch movies in your parked car
  • camping grounds where you sleep in your parked car

What else do I miss? Was there any other popular activities done in parked cars?

I had no idea that you could download movies from the 90ies from archive.org (jeena.net)

I couldn’t find the Flintstones movie from 1994 anywhere but googling it I found it here archive.org/details/the-flintstones_202304 and you can either download it via torrent or directly. On top of it it says that the movie is CC0 which means Public Domain. But that can’t really be, it’s only 29 years old....

redcalcium,

Any random internet users can create an account and upload stuff to the internet archive. Just be careful when you download softwares there.

redcalcium,

You can’t put your face down on a pussy like that without blood splattering everywhere.
